The SpaceSituated on a cliff at the north end of Kuruwitu Marine Conservancy, the house enjoys lovely views and gentle breezes. Tastefully furnished and comfortable. It has a mature garden and a fun sundowner deck just above the Indian Ocean. There is a gorgeous 12 x 6m infinity pool with a stunning pool house. There is a cook, a housekeeper, a groundsman and Maintenance man. The house has good security. Staff quarters can accommodate one extra if required. The master bedroom has its own sectioned off veranda as well as a nook with a desk and an extra bed. The middle bedroom has a double bed and a sofa bed suitable for a young child. The rear bedroom has 2 single beds and a bunk bed. There is a small TV with a DVD player in this room. There is a selection of kid and adult movies that can be borrowed. All bedrooms have air-conditioning and standing fans in case of preference or power cuts. All bedrooms are ensuite with large bathrooms with showers. There is wi-fi but guests need to buy airtime from Safaricom and log on to choose a bundle they wish to purchase with the airtime. Safaricom scratch cards are easily available including at the closest villages. The sitting/dining area is big and very airy with good security wrought iron all around. It is tastefully furnished in a coastal style with wooden overhead fans and 'lamu beds' as sofa's. There is a games chest with scrabble, poker etc. The kitchen is relatively small compared to the rest of the house and is manned by Reuben who is a competent cook specialising in seafood, curries and swahili style cooking. Pili is the housekeeper and takes care of the laundry and general cleaning. Guest AccessThe house has direct beach access at low - mid tide. Steps to beach relatively steep for the elderly/infirm. Beach access at very high tide (for keen body surfers) or for elderly folk unable to manage the steps is only a few hundred metres down the road on the public access route. The pool and beach: Kuruwitu Beach is one of the last unspoilt beaches on the Kenyan coast. Despite it being blissfully bare of people and beach boys , it is secure as there are 'askari's' patrolling for the marine conservancy. It is also unusually clean as the conservancy oversee the picking up of the debris that is common along most coastlines. The snorkeling metres off the shore is incredible - coral heads mean an abundance of tropical fish, octopus, lobster. There is a glass bottom boat as well as a fishing/dolphin spotting boat for hire. The conservancy also offer guided tours of the reef where there are even more wonderful snorkeling spots. The infinity pool set in front of the house has a 'baby pool' section. The adjoining pool house is large and comfortable with a bar and drinks fridge as well as a living and dining area, a water feature and sunbeds. The terrace below with plunge pool is not safe for young or unaccompanied children. The Neighborhood If you can bear to drag yourself away from the fabulous pool and beach - the world class Vipingo Ridge golf course (soon to be 36 holes) is less than a 10 minute drive away. The elegant club house has a good restaurant in a beautiful setting. Kilifi which has supermarkets and a bustling little town is a 15 minute drive away to the North. Dhow trips can be taken up the creek here. Diving is available at the famous Mnarani Club. There is also sailing and water-ski-ing available at the picturesque boatyard. Malindi is a 1 hour drive Northwards. Head 15 minutes south and Mtwapa has several excellent restaurants and tourist activities. The Bamburi Nature trail is 25 minutes from the house as is the Nakumat shopping centre. Nyali is less than 30 minutes away with a cinema, shopping complex, hotels and night clubs. Old town Mombasa (Fort Jesus etc) is approx 40 minutes drive depending on the traffic.

The SpaceTakashak is a rustic 3 bedroom beach house right on the beach. You can either rent the whole house or individual rooms and maybe share with others. See our other listings for details. Family owned for 35 years, the house has been sympathetically improved over the years, whilst maintaining a simple beach house character. Light is provided by hurricane lamps. You will be looked after by William and Nickson two local Giriama caretakers. Takashak is very chilled. Get ready to slow down, read, switch your phone off, swim, snorkle, sun-bathe, eat fish straight from the sea, walk up the creek, walk along the beach at full moon, explore the ancient village of Takaungu. You will be self catering but basic help is available from William and Nickson who can do some food preparation, wash the dishes, laundry and cleaning, bed-making etc. The last 20 metres of the private drive is a steep 4 wheel drive only hill. 2 wheel drive vehicles can be left at the top of the hill 30 metres from the house. On arrival you'll be offered fresh coconut juice off our own coconut trees to revitalise you after your journey. Karibu! Guest AccessYou have use of the whole house plus the caretakers William and Nixon. Interaction with GuestsYou will have the house to yourselves. Takashak is our holiday home, a very special place in our lives, and it's a pleasure to share such a beautiful secluded spot. The NeighborhoodTakashak lies on Takaungu beach, 400 metres of white Indian Ocean sand enjoyed by only 3 properties. Lush greenery provides privacy from the beach so that you can lie on the roof terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean just metres away. Away from it all down 5 kms of dirt road off the Mombasa to Malindi main road, Takashak is secluded, peaceful, quiet and hidden away. The regional centre Kilifi is a 25 minutes drive, the historic port of Mombasa 1 hour to the south, Watamu and Malindi an hour to the North. Takaungu creek can be walked at low tide and takes you on a fascinating 20 minute walk to the Swahili Muslim village The nearest village is Takaungu village, a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk. Takaungu beach is great for snorkelling at low tide when lots of pools are exposed. Takaungu creek makes a fascinating walk to the village and beyond as it narrows into mangroves. Keep an eye on the tide movements. William used to be a canoe fisherman and he still has his dug out canoe so if you like to go fishing with him feel free to organise it when it suits you. Explore Takaungu Village with its local shops, especially Mr Mohamed Ali's shop which is the main store where you can buy most basics. Mosques, wells, schools, a clinic, fish market, canoe ferry to north side of creek and friendly laid back locals. Vuma Caves: 45 minute walk or 25 minutes by boda-boda from Takashak the open ocean crashes on to Vuma's spikey jagged rocks and caves. Experienced divers can venture into the water; there are caves and blow holes. Game fish can be seen from the rocks. Kuruwitu Marine Reserve: a wonderful marine reserve, 20 minutes drive south, snorkle in clear water and see amazingly varied, beautiful corals and sea life. Expect to see turtles. Zinj, in Takaungu village, a good quality expat run (by Amanda) leather goods manufacturer sells beaded sandals, bags, dog collars etc from a tastefully renovated old Swahili house in the village. Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort within 30 minutes drive. This is a world class Clubhouse and 18 hole golf course built to USGA specifications. Boating, yachting and dhow trips can be organised from Kilifi Boatyard and Mnarani boatyard, the latter offering PADI diving tuition, wake-boarding, water-skiing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, deep sea diving, fishing and game fishing. Wild Living Eco store at Kilifi Plantations (on main road) well worth a visit for eco products and beauty items. Takashak is 2 kms from Takaungu village, an ancient sleepy village at the head of a shallow creek, 25 minutes south of Kilifi, 1 hour south of Malindi and Watamu and 1 hour north of Mombasa. Kilifi is a bustling but laid back town full of local expats and friendly locals. Lots of shops shut from 12-2pm but not the main ones. The huge bridge now links it easily with the area south of Kilifi creek and Mombasa. Kilifi is 25 minutes drive north of Takaungu and Takashak. Kilifi Boatyard offers all boat servicing and repairs, a wonderful creek front setting with a sand floor bar looking down Kilifi creek and a bar and restaurant offering simple sea food, samosas, salads, cold beers. Saturday is the most popular day to visit. Getting AroundOff the beaten track, Takaungu is 5 kms down a dirt road from the main Mombasa-Malindi road. Transport from the main road to Takaungu and the house is provided by boda-boda, the local motorbike taxis. If you don't have a vehicle the best way to get around is to walk, take a Tuk-Tuk, catch a matatu or get a taxi. Other Things to NoteTipping is customary but not obligatory. Please respect local Muslim customs. Takaungu is not a tourist hot spot. It's a quiet peaceful village with a long history. Please respect and enjoy.

Some might have roasted crayfish and sliced a few fresh fruits for lunch on a deserted beach or on a sailboat; others might taste the local dishes in a mud hut just across our gate in the village. After lunch guests can get involved in one of the many activities available, ranging from deep sea fishing or fly fishing lessons with fishing guides Jamie and Sven, dhow sailing along the creek and reef just out at sea with Captain Shallo, water-sports with Mark, Anne and Jo, a village walk with Juma, a day on one of Kilifi’s endless white sand beaches, or a hike along the wild cliffs of Vuma. Kayaking the emerald creek, diving with Kilifi’s dive club Buccaneers, traditional herbal medicine tours, hiking, and sunset beach volleyball back at the house are just a few other opportunities. Finish the day back on our beach for sunset and a bonfire, barbecue, or foolish moon party. The adventurous might then like to head out for a night on the town in one (or many!) of Kilifi’s rather boisterous bars. Those less inclined could stay at home and watch a good film on our projector or gather around a few glasses of wine under the stars by the pool… A major objective of our project is to act as an incubator for the creation of small local businesses providing market access to community members wishing to set up small tourism enterprises such as village tours, dhow trips, horse riding, fishing trips, local restaurants, snorkeling, hiking and cycling tours. Check out our complete list of activities you can take part in while staying with us! oDhow sailing: Sailing trips can be organised ranging from a two-hour sunset “sundowner” trip, to a few days down to Mtwapa or Mombasa, or even all the way down to Zanzibar. Captain Shallo and his experienced crew can take you snorkeling, fishing, or sailing on the reef on one of his dhows (dhows are beautiful hand-carved traditional wooden Swahili sailing boats). The trip can include a traditional grilled seafood Swahili meal on a beach and/or snorkeling and fishing if requested. Discounted rates are available for guests of Distant Relatives. oFishing: There is some great deep sea fishing for tuna, sailfish, wahoo, mahi mahi, blue and black marlin just in front of Kilifi! Bottom fishing is also excellent on the reef! This can be organized from a traditional dhow with Captain Shallo. Our friends Jamie and Sven, two very experienced fishing guides, can also take you out deep sea fishing, bottom fishing, cliff fishing, or offer you flyfishing lessons and even organize trout fishing trips in some of their secret spots on Mt Kenya or in Ethiopia! You will be shown around the homestead, visiting the small fish farm, the cassava fields, fruit trees and coconut groves. Every visit is different depending on the growing season. Next you will have a chance to sample the local coconut wine, learn how to grate coconut and extract the cream as well as participating in the meal preparation. The atmosphere is laid back, the food is delicious and the company informative and engaging. oVillage tour with Saidi: This is our second community-run and owned activity. Saidi will take you for a guided walk through the hills allowing you to experience village livelihoods, learn about natural plant medicines, seasonal use of crops and livestock, and village lifestyles. Born and raised in the village, Saidi knows every secret of the area. He will take you to visit the local Mangwe (palm wine bar), several village homesteads and subsistence farms, traditional Giriama buildings as well as schools and church services (on the right days), and finally the sacred baobab shrine. You might be lucky and meet the animal trap builder and all kinds of other fascinating characters. Kick back and enjoy the walk! oExplore Takaungu village and Vuma cliffs: Takaungu is thought of by many as one of the most spectacular parts of the Kenyan Coast. Takaungu is a small traditional Swahili village virtually untouched by western influence. The village is located along a beautiful and pristine emerald creek amongst cliffs and baobabs. A few kilometres further are Vuma Cliffs, with even more spectacular scenery of huge waves crashing against wild rough cliffs. This is a nice day trip, great for photographers, fishermen, and anyone feeling a little adventurous! oRestaurants: Nautilus (for when you’re feeling fancy!) All About KILIFI Kilifi is a resort town on the coast of Kenya, 56 kilometres (35 mi) northeast by road of Mombasa. The town lies on the Kilifi Creek and sits on the estuary of the Goshi River. Kilifi is capital of the Kilifi County. The town is known for its beach and for the ruins of Mnarani, including mosques and tombs, dating from the 14th to the 17th century. The towns sits on both sides of the estuary and are linked by the Kilifi Bridge which overlooks the estuary. The South side has the Mnarani ruins and Shauri Moyo beach while the North side is the main part of Kilifi Town and Bofa Beach. The weather is generally warm throughout the year (above 25 degrees) with two seasons of moderate rainfall (about 800-1000 mm). Long periods of rain start around March and last into July, while the short periods start around October and last until December. The terrain is generally flat with sandy-loamy soils. Common trees include Cocos lucifera, Anacadium occidentale, Azadirachta indica, and Mangifera indica. Demographics: Kilifi is a cosmopolitan town with mixed ethnic groups. The predominant inhabitants (about 80%) are from the Mijikenda groups (mainly Giriama and Chonyi).Other groups include the Swahili-Arab descendants, Barawas, Bajunis, Somalis as well as other groups from inland. There is a handful of Indians, and Europeans, mainly British, German and Italian. Dhows in Kilifi Creek: Like every coastal town, fishing is one of the historical economic activities. With time, the town has slowly been transforming from a fishing village to basic industrial and service. The growth of the town was mainly fueled by the cashew nut milling factory between 1976 and 1990; the district has been a producer of cashews since 1930.The town almost became a ghost town when the factory was closed due to decline in nuts supply, mismanagement of the factory and increased global competition. Other industrial activities include milk processing at Kilifi Plantations. Since the transformation of the Kilifi institute of Agriculture into Pwani University, there has been substantial expansion of the service sector. Banking activity has been growing with about 7 banks (KCB, Barclays, Postbank, Imperial, Equity, Co operative, Diamond Trust Bank and most recent National Bank) as well as microfinance institutions. Retail business and hotels have historically been significant economic activities. 3 to 4 star hotels include Sea Horse Hotel, Mnarani Club, Kilifi Bay Beach Resort and Baobab Lodge. Health The Kilifi County Hospital, which is also a referral hospital, serves all of Kilifi County, and also supports the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, a large medical research center collaborative between Kenya's KEMRI and the British Wellcome Trust, known for its work on malaria and bacterial and viral childhood infections. Several other private clinics can be found here. The Khairat Medical Centre which was recently opened is equipped with modern laboratory, x-ray and scan machines with qualified personnel is situated in the Mtaani area of Sokoni Sb-Location opposite Masjid Hudaa.
