The SpaceStroll down the flagstone walkway past the shaded hammock area through the limestone rock archway into the first courtyard. The cottage is up some stairs to your right. It is a one room structure with a full-sized bed, desk, kitchen table w/ chairs, stove with oven, large fridge and small sink with windows everywhere. It has a heater in the winter and 2 air-conditioners in the summer. As you turn to go back through the door, you catch ahold of the view of the Chisos Mountains in Big bend National Park. You descend the stairs back into the courtyard, and find a wonderful handmade fireplace, a large dining table, an outdoor shower (with great hot water) and a large kitchen sink with large metal counters for an outdoor kitchen. If you walk through the next archway you come to the second courtyard: to your right is a breakfast table surrounded by rock and greenery and wood, and to your left, a pergola with another full-sized bed (in case you want to sleep outside) surrounded by 4 bougainvillea. Keep going through the small, tall garden of chili and flowers and watermelons (depending on the season) to the bathroom. It is up 3 steps and includes a tub, a sink and a toilet, and Moroccan light fixtures. This property is on the north side of the Ghost Town, so it's quiet and private here, but you have your own view and can walk easily through the ruins to The Starlight Theater or to the Ghost Town for coffee or shopping.

The SpaceThanks for your interest in the Leapin' Lizard! The Leapin' Lizard Guest House is a small rain-catchment and solar-powered adobe and stone house on 20 acres, located 2 miles from Terlingua Ghostown, the cultural center of Terlingua's universe. It's convenient to both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Hiking, mountain biking, rafting and canoeing, atv, jeep, air tours and golf are all activities close by. The porch of the Terlingua Trading Company in the Ghostown is the local 'family room', where live music is often played. The Starlight Theatre, also in the Ghostown, offers fine dining and music as well. La Kiva is another popular restaurant nearby. The Leapin' Lizard sits at the end of a dirt road - very private and peaceful, with a great view of the Chisos Mts. in Big Bend Nat. Park. It's located nine tenths of a mile off of the pavement, but it's a good road, fine in any weather, for any vehicle with normal clearance. Water at the guest house is provided by a rain-water collection system, fairly common here in our desert. Mindfulness about the amount of water you use is important here. The Leapin' Lizard is also a solar-powered place, and while there are lights, plus you can charge any devices you may have, I recommend that you leave high-electricity-use items such as hair dryers at home. Please don't bring ANY appliances of your own such as fans, coffee-makers, MEDICAL DEVICES or electronic toys... An oscillating floor fan is provided. The adobe has a very comfortable queen-size bed, with linens and towels provided. The guest house really serves two people best, but if you have up to four people total in your group, a campsite with a raised tent pad, fire pit, and picnic table is available for overflow for $40 per night and can accommodate two. No young children, please, as there are safety concerns; the house sits in a native environment and there are steps, rocks, and cacti all around. If you have children that you hope to have stay as well, let's talk about it first. Wi-fi is available on the property, but not accessible inside the guest house. The outdoor kitchen has what you need to fix meals from breakfast burritos to steaks, including a small propane refrigerator, a 4-burner cook top, and a charcoal Weber grill. There is no oven and no microwave. Filtered drinking water, cooking oil, and spices are provided, as well as coffee fixins and a selection of teas. The coffee system is a porcelain Melita cone/ filter and insulated carafe, which is ready for coffee lovers upon arrival. There are plenty of dishes and utensils of all kinds. The kitchen facility is simple but very serviceable. The sink is an old enamel/cast iron one from the 50's, with built-in drain boards and cupboard space below. There's a large stainless steel container with a faucet that provides water to the sink. You can also bring hot water for dish washing from the spigot located in the outdoor shower a few steps away, in the enameled kettle provided for that purpose. Simple, but it works. The, ahem, bathroom facilities are about 30' from the house, in a little adobe structure that houses a sink and a county approved propane incinerating toilet, and the most necessary requirement - a seat with a view. An incinerating toilet is meant mostly for solid waste, but can also handle some liquid. Peeing in the great outdoors is not a requirement, but is greatly appreciated. The stone outdoor shower is plenty private, yet you can still enjoy the view of the mountains over the top of its cedar gate. There's lots of hot water, of course. There is also a separate campsite convenient to the guest house, equipped with a 15'x15' raised tent pad, a picnic table, a fire pit, and two Adirondack chairs. If you are interested in setting up a tent for, say, your teenagers, or another couple, consider the campsite an option. You can light a small fire in the chiminea out on the porch if you like, and there's also a stone fire ring available when Brewster County is not under a burn ban. Firewood is sometimes available in limited quantities, but you're certainly welcome to bring your own. Our grocery store also sells small bundles. The Leapin' Lizard is normally available to guests from September through May, but if the lack of a.c. in this solar-powered house is not an issue, accommodations can be arranged during the summer months for a discounted rate of $145 per night's stay. There's another building, which began life as a two-stall horse barn, about 200 feet west of the rental (the porch/ main windows/ views from the rental face east, towards the National Park). It's being converted into a home now, and is where I live. I understand, however, that peace and privacy are two of the best things about being at my guest house, and I make certain you have plenty of both. Hope to see you in Terlingua! Guest AccessYou have access to the whole 20 acres, the adobe bedroom, the porch, which contains the kitchen area, has a small dining table, a chiminea, and comfortable seating for relaxing with a book or enjoying the view. The stone addition to the adobe houses the water heater and is currently used for storage. It isn't part of the guest house yet, but will eventually be an indoor shower/sink/dressing area for guests... There is also a separate 8'-high deck with a shaded area and chairs on the stone patio below, sometimes used for sleeping under the stars with your own sleeping bags. This is a great thing to do, weather permitting, during any of the meteor showers that occur throughout the year. Also a nice place to just enjoy the view! Interaction with GuestsI'm available to address any needs and questions my guests may have, but unless they initiate fellowship, I give folks plenty of space and privacy. I've met some wonderful people who have stayed with me, but understand that everyone is different and some are more interested in friendly interaction than others. I've lived in Big Bend 31 years and am happy to share my knowledge of the place, the outfitters and activities here, some of the best hikes to do, etc. Feel free to ask! There are also a few chores I do around the place, such as watering plants and checking on your drinking water supply, that I take care of as unobtrusively as possible - generally when you are out and about enjoying your day. The NeighborhoodSome things I love about my 'neighborhood' are the view! And the quiet! And the proximity to area attractions... I also consider the folks across the Rio Grande to be my neighbors and friends, and if you are so inclined and have a passport, it can be a wonderful experience to cross over (by rowboat) into the village of Boquillas, Coahuilla, Mexico. Located across the river from Rio Grande Village in Big Bend National Park, the crossing reopened there (finally!) awhile back. I mention it here so that if this interests you, you'll know to bring your passport... Getting AroundThere is no usual taxi sevice or public transit in Terlingua, except for a gal who has a business called 'Help Me, Rhonda' (yes, that IS her name). She runs a safe and comfortable van during some of our local events, such as the Terlingua Chili Cook-Off. Other Things to NoteI feed the birds here regularly, and you're likely to see a variety of feathered locals at the feeder, especially in the spring. Scaled quail come in, as do Scott's orioles and Mexican cardinals. There's a regular furry visitor - a young, one-eyed female coyote I call Thin Lizzie - you may also see her if you're lucky. It's common to hear the coyotes singing in the evening or early morning. There are also three great horned owls that hoot regularly in the early hours of the morning, mostly during the warmer months...

The SpaceThe house was dubbed "Boystown" by Oregon river guides living here in the 80's, and the name just stuck. This stacked limestone cabin can comfortably fit one or two people. It has a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom. The patio, the porch and the yard all offer stunning views of the mountains and badlands of Big Bend National Park. Not to mention the night sky with stars from horizon to horizon. Float the river, enjoy world class biking or hiking only minutes away at Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park. Guest AccessThere is no Wi-Fi available on premises, but guests can access it at the Starlight Restaurant or La Posada coffee shop, both very nearby. Interaction with GuestsI live nearby and would be happy to share my knowledge of Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park as well as the Terlingua area itself. The NeighborhoodIt is only a few minutes away from La Posada Milagro coffee shop with free wifi. There are three restaurants and bars within a few blocks, The Starlight Theatre, The Boathouse, and the High Sierra. Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are both a short drive away. Getting AroundBig Bend National Park is only eight miles east of here. Big Bend Ranch State Park is eleven miles to the west. Other Things to NoteEnjoy the view of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park from the porch. And after dark the stars put on their nightly show.

The SpaceThink of camping with all the amenities~ Shower, indoor or out, kitchen, refrigeration, electricity, air conditioning, sailboat style flush toilet, additional bathhouse, nice bedding, all available for you to live in or use if you choose to camp. The property has two adjacent trailers with a separate bathhouse between them, including an outdoor shower. The trailers are never rented to separate parties. Each trailer is perfectly suitable for 2 people. Each trailer has a private bathroom and both trailers share the bathhouse. There is a futon in one of the trailers, making it comfortable sleeping for 4 people and increasing the party size to 6 total. Again, the trailer will only be rented to one party to insure your privacy. On cloudless nights Big Bend has an incredibly dark night sky, free of light pollution, offering a full canopy of stars.  You may also enjoy sleeping under the covered porch where you will find a bed on wheels that is perfect on cool, star filled nights. The road to the trailer is an all weather dirt road most of the year. July through September is our rainy season and it can get muddy and on occasion, flash flooding happens in the arroyos. You don't need 4x4 and high clearance is not necessary, but some clearance is. Sorry, no dogs allowed. Guest AccessFor now, we have no internet access, only a land line. Cell service works good for most carriers and texting seems to work great for everyone. Internet is available at La Posada Milagro y Poco Mas Cafe, in the Terlingua Ghost Town. A sweet spot where people gather, play music, share stories of the area. Interaction with GuestsI am a phone call away &/or a 10 minute drive if you need anything; suggest ideas for hikes, biking, river trips, birding, anything that comes to mind. I would be happy to meet you upon arrival to show you around and answer any questions you may have. If not, I'll respect your privacy and let you contact me with any needs you may have. The NeighborhoodYou are within walking distance from the Historic Ghost Town, Starlight Theater, Y Poco Mas, Music on the porch, human interaction, yet you will feel far away with the large views of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, 15 minute drive to the west entrance. The lack of lights in our area make the skies feel so big you could fall into them. Hiking, biking trails leave right from your front door. Getting AroundThe road to the trailer is an all weather road most of the year. July through September is our rainy season and it can get muddy and on occasion, flash flooding happens in the arroyos. You don't need 4x4 and high clearance is not necessary, but some clearance is. A nice hike from your front door to the Ghost Town porch is about 1/2 mile as the Raven flies one way and is an easy walk back and forth. If you are a mountain bike enthusiast this is the place for you. I can't even begin to tell you about all the great trails in our area, there are too many. You can leave from your trailer and explore miles and miles of good dirt roads or you can drive to the Big Bend Ranch State Park and ride on their single track trails that are, simply put; awesome. Other Things to NoteI'm sorry but no dogs. We tried it and it didn't work.

This is a 37 foot travel trailer with 27 feet of living space (the back 10 feet is a storage area). It has one queen size REAL bed and a fold out couch in the living room. There is an additional utility building that has an extra real flushing toilet, shower and community outside kitchen with a full size range/stove. We have hosted many tent campers on the property for $10 each per night, they too get use of the utility building. There is also an outside picnic table. The property is within walking distance to all restaurants, shops, historical cemetery, and bars in the Terlingua Ghost town. Lots of views of the surrounding mountains, close to the Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park, mountain bike and hiking trails. We are located in the Terlingau Ghost Town, lots of biking, hiking, rafting, and star gazing can be enjoyed by all; we also have an outdoor kitchen to use, a charcoal BBQ, and outside picnic table.

Interaction with GuestsIf you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call or email. The NeighborhoodThe tipi is located on the same property as our other rental the Desert Pearl and Casa Piedra. You are within walking distance of all the restaurants and bars in town. Please no late night loud music or parties, others may be sleeping. You are also within walking distance to several restaurants, the must-see historic Terlingua cemetery and lots of old ruins. Please note some of the ruins are actually refurbished homes - so please don't walk in private property. Other Things to NoteNote the tipi is made of canvas and impossible to seal due to the poles sticking thru the top. That said, if it rains hard here in the desert you may experience some rain coming in from top - dripping into the center of the tipi. Please take care to keep your stuff away from the middle of the tipi if there is a chance of rains.

The NeighborhoodWe are located just 5 miles east off of Hwy 118 in on the main road of Terlingua Ranch and 1 mile north. From the main ranch road you will pass two streets labeled by white rocks on the right. The first is "Lost Road" followed by "Snake Road". We are the first LEFT AFTER Snake Road also labeled with a white rock which reads "Casa De Creosote". Turn left there and about one mile down our driveway is on the right marked with an old wood sign that reads "Holly Street". We are nestled between Nine Points Mesa and El Corazon mountains. We have no close neighbors so enjoy the quiet and the spectacular views of the mountains and milky way. This dirt road sometimes requires a high clearance vehicle but 4-wheel drive is not necessary and will drop you right into the north end of the park. Other Things to NoteAlthough we do have internet access there is no cell service. Since we do not have laundry facilities please provide your own bedding. During cold months a small propane heater is recommended. In the summer months it can be quite hot. There is no air conditioning in the trailer but a small DC powered fan is provided. Also, all of our water is from rainwater catchment only so please bring your own drinking and cooking water. You may use our water for washing dishes. Solar is enough to run the outdoor refridgerator, charge a computer or phone, run lights, etc. however, it is not adequate enough to run things such as hairdryers, irons, electric coffee pots, or things of that nature. As the weather warms up it's possible for rattlesnakes to make an appearance. Where boots while walking around the property whenever possible and don't forget a flashlight or headlamp. Our main house is about 100ft from the trailer. Although we may be home during your stay we respect your privacy but are also available to answer any questions!

The SpaceThis is off-the-grid primitive camping. The only difference is you have a structure to sleep in rather than a tent. Please keep that in mind. A queen cot and a single cot is provided. There is a solar panel that provides enough energy for a small light fixture and for charging of your phone, computer, etc...but if it is rainy or cloudy then don't count on it to work. There is wifi available on the property. BUT no cell service in most areas of the Big Bend area including my property. No running water. Make sure you bring plenty with you. No flushable toilets but eco-friendly composting toilet available within walking distance. BBQ and fire pit available. (Bring your own firewood, starter fluid, etc...) Small propane heater is provided in your structure, but you will need to provide your own propane canisters (small green bottles - one bottle equals 3-4 hours of warmth.) You are responsible for linens/bedding/etc....bring everything as if you were camping in a tent. Showers available just 4 miles away, at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge , which allows access to shower & laundry facility, restaurant, and swimming pool. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner for your convenience. Guest Access.

The SpaceNOTE! During the summer, it's hot in Terlingua. Daytime temperatures can be up to 107F with night-time temps in the 80's at midnight falling to the 70's in the early morning hours. If you're not comfy with the heat, you might consider booking your vacation with us from September through May. Large tent with 2 twin beds with memory foam mattresses, table, 2 chairs, rug, excellent view of the Chisos Mountains. There are two bathrooms and a private shower with a "rain forest" shower head and hot water. The Terlingua Ghost Town is a magical, historic destination. 7.5 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park and convenient to Big Bend State Park. Terlingua Las Ruinas campsites are just a quick walk to the Starlight Cafe, The Boathouse, La Posada Milagro (breakfast, lunch and coffee), and shopping. Terlingua falls within the "dark sky" area- there's no light pollution, so the stars are indeed "big and bright." We provide sheets, blanket, pillows, pillow cases. Things you might want to bring: flash light, extra blankets, lots of water, comfy shoes. NOTE: We've learned that it's best to be clear about this: you're renting a tent that is outdoors. Texas weather is unpredictable. The wind may blow. It may rain. During the summer, it can be hot. In the winter, it can get cold. If the sound of wind blowing against your tent will disturb you, you may want to bring earplugs. If you're sensitive to heat, it may be best to book during the spring or fall. If you have questions, please ask first. Guest AccessYou'll have access to your tent, convenient parking, 2 bathrooms and the shower. There's lots of hiking opportunities and Terlingua is a popular cycling site. Be sure and bring towels and toiletry items. Interaction with GuestsBetsy and I will be available for you. We want you to have a great time. We have an office behind the Boathouse restaurant and are on the property daily. The NeighborhoodOriginally founded as a quicksilver mining community, Terlingua has a rich history. There are still many "Ruinas" (ruins) from the mining days, including several at Terlingua Las Ruinas. Terlingua hosts several music festivals and has a year-round live music scene that is original and amazing. Home to several noted songwriters including Butch Hancock, it's also a favorite destination for touring singer-songwriters and bands from all over the country. Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Boquillas, Mexico, and many other destinations are an easy drive. Bicyclists and Bikers enjoy the curving roads through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world- River Road (12 miles West) makes everybody's top-10 list. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation here. There is one gas station. Of course, once you're at Terlingua Las Ruinas, you can walk to most of the fun. Other Things to NoteTerlingua has a vibrant night life, and you'll be able to enjoy it conveniently- all the live music, bars and restaurants are within 1/10th of a mile from the site. At night, you may hear laughter and music.
