The SpaceBook in at this comfortable bungalow built in traditional style, surrounded by banana, coconut and mango trees, for one or two nights, depending on your onward plans. Rajalaxmi and her daughter Jisha provide a warm welcome, and deliver continental-style or Keralan breakfasts, and delicious home-cooked Keralan meals and snacks, from their neighbouring cottage. Although always at hand to chat, answer questions, and arrange transport if needed, they leave guests to enjoy the surroundings in peace when their presence is not required. The journey here to / from Mysore is extremely scenic, passing via Kuthuparamba through luxuriant rubber, tea and coffee plantations and dense jungle (5-6 hours by bus or taxi). Tellicherry (Thalassery), on the main Trivandrum/Varkala/ Kochi to Goa railway line, is easily reached by bus / taxi / auto rickshaw ( 35 minutes). Price includes pick-up from Tellicherry on the main Kochi-Mumbai railway line (30 minutes by taxi or auto rickshaw ) or from Kuthuparamba (25 minutes-on the Mysore-Tellicherry bus route). Those who wish can take a leisurely walk through the fields, perhaps stopping at one of the nearby villages for a cup of tea. The area around the bungalow is densely cultivated with banana, areca nut, tapioca and coconut trees, whilst jungle and cashewnut trees cover the hillsides. Traditional Keralan houses with red tiled roofs are interspersed with grandiose Middle-Eastern style villas, built by those working in Gulf countries. Temples and mosques abound, as do the shrines which host the theyyams (spirit dances) unique to North Kerala. Each comes alive for 24 hours each year, when elaborately painted and costumed dancers reinact events in their deity's life, accompanied by the wild drumbeats. The god's spirit is believed to enter them, and between dances they give advice or blessings to members of the audience. During the winter months it is usually possible to visit a theyyam, and doing so is an unforgettable and unique experience. For the restless, a trip to the colourful fishing port of Tellicherry, the drive-in Muzhupilangad beach, or St Angelo Fort at Kannur, either by taxi or by local bus, can be arranged. The bungalow is a few minutes' walk from the road, and there is no parking on site. Cars would be left out at the owner's risk. The nearest airport is at Khozikode (Calicut), 2 hours' drive away. Guests should arrive by train at Tellicherry (Thalassery), where they will be met. Alternatively, they should take a bus or taxi from Mysore to Kuthuparamba, on the Tellicherry route, where they will be met. Guests travelling on their own by taxi should ask the driver to call Jisha, who will guide them to the house itself. Guests should note that there is no night life here, and no TV, or restaurants in the immediate area! Little English is spoken. Wifi is accessed on the verandah only. There are occasional power cuts but guests are supplied with an emergency lamp. Adventurous travellers prepared to put up with these minor hardships, and unafraid of the odd spider, will enjoy a unique and memorable stay in this little explored part of Kerala. They carry building materials on their heads - from the roadside, along the jungle paths to where the work is taking place. They also collect sand from the beach - for mixing cement. Work can only be carried out when it is not monsoon - the time when guests are usually at Malabar Cove. Guests usually find this fascinating, especially when the local electrician stands in a puddle of water to fix the electric! He is also the plumber. Internet is not fully functional in this location. Kannur might have derived its name from one of the the Hindu diety, Kannan (Lord Krishna) and Ur (place) making it the place of Lord Krishna. The deity of the Katalayi Sreekrishna temple was earlier situated in a shrine at Katalayi Kotta in the south eastern part of the Kannur town. With the Western Ghats in the east and Lakshadweep sea in the west, kannur district is bounded by a wealth of natural beauty. Kannur is blessed with natural beaches, hill stations, rivers, backwaters, historical monuments and religious centres. The district itself which shares much of the natural splendor has been a key contributor to the cultural, religious, political and industrial heritage of the state. In addition, Kannur enjoys the credit of having been the cradle of many a colourful folk art and folk music of Kerala.

Half board (afternoon snack, dinner and breakfast) and unlimited tea, coffee and cold drinking water are included in the room price. The area is densely cultivated with banana, areca nut, tapioca and coconut trees, whilst jungle and cashew trees cover the hillsides. Guests can relax on the verandah with a book, watch the huge variety of colourful bird life, or take a leisurely walk through the fields, perhaps stopping at one of the nearby villages for a cup of tea. For the more energetic, a visit to a theyyam (if available) or into the colourful fishing port of Tellicherry can arranged, either by taxi or by local bus. English is not widely spoken here, and inhabitants are conservative, with a large Muslim as well as Hindu population. Guests should therefore observe local dress style and manners. Alcohol is not readily available- if brought to the property it should be consumed discreetly. This is a no-smoking property, there is no TV, there are no good restaurants in the immediate area, and there is no night life! Wifi is accessed on the verandah only. There are occasional power cuts but guests are supplied with an emergency lamp. To maximise their own enjoyment and that of future guests, visitors are kindly requested to be patient with curious local children, but not to give them sweets, pens, or any other gifts. They are asked to be very discreet if taking photographs, and never to photograph local people without first obtaining permission.
