Yet, we are less than four miles from the four-lane highway, Route 460/221. You have the best of both worlds. Solitude and city life—if you wish. You can be downtown in Roanoke within 25 minutes drive. (it takes 15 minutes to drive up the mountain on a narrow, winding road). Having lived here 26 years, we still have never tired of the mountain beauty and sereneness. Getting AroundYou will have to have your own car. There are no stores nor public transportation on the mountain. Other Things to NoteThis entire property was once a tomato farm about 100 years ago. We own one of the original homestead houses. The mountain side was stripped of trees and the land was terraced with rocks. Now it is mostly a thick forest of poplars trees, beach trees, some wild fruit trees, many blackberry bushes and black walnut trees. There are about 4 acres of lawn at the crown of the property.

Our cabin is situated in a clearing on five acres of otherwise wooded land, surrounded by the natural world, yet offering all the comforts of home. The front porch of our cabin is the front row in a theater of nature. Take a seat and wait for the wildlife to pass by, and occasionally stop by for a visit. Birds – Hawks, owls, pileated woodpeckers, bluebirds, spring warblers, and wild turkeys are just a small sampling of the avian visitors. Foxes, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, deer, and the occasional black bear are often guest stars in the spectacular show. You don’t need a ticket, just a pair of binoculars, a bit of patience, and perhaps a glass of wine to sharpen the senses. You can also take a walk in the woods on our maintained trails, and visit the nearby creek which runs cold and clear from the mountains. There are breathtaking views in all directions for viewing or photographing. The home is seven miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and seven miles from the National D-Day Memorial. The Peaks of Otter Winery which makes 'Fruit of the Farm Wine' is located on the farm. Nearby, you can find fast food and gourmet restaurants.
