The SpaceWelcome to our Little Bach By The Jetty. A bach is Kiwi-speak for a small holiday home, traditionally by the water. We are proud to offer our cosy bach as a getaway for Kiwis or tourists wanting an authentic New Zealand experience. The bach is next to the boat-ramp, beach and jetty. Guest AccessGuests can enjoy the whole bach to themselves. There is a master bedroom, twin bedroom and another bedroom with two sets of single bunks. There is a kitchen (which comes with basic provisions like tea, coffee, sugar, salt and oil) where you can prepare your freshly-caught fish or oysters. Relax in the spacious living with board-games, a stereo and television. We provide linen and towels. There is also a washing machine. The NeighborhoodTinopai is a cute backwater town which is only a two-hour drive from Auckland but a world away from the daily grind. Locals are friendly and proud of this old-school Kiwi community which has 200-400 residents. There are a couple of nice walks around, especially to nearby Sandy Beach. Getting AroundThe best thing about staying in Tinopai is that it's off the beaten track . . . however, this means that the best way of getting here is by car (or boat if that's how you're rolling). We provide well-detailed directions on getting here so you don't get lost. Other Things to NoteThere is one basic grocery shop in Tinopai so we recommend you bring most of your food with you. We can give you directions to the nearest general stores to stock up en route to the bach. If you want, there is good fishing and sometimes you can pick fresh oysters. There is a lady who sells juicy fresh mussels nearby too.

The SpaceRetreat on the shores of the largest harbour in the southern hemisphere. The area is steeped in history - there's a nearby marae while at Batley there was once a wharf, two fish factories, a flour mill, a shop, post office, a church and school - and lots of people. Our house was once a boarding house and hotel. My book, 'Love at the End of the Road' (Penguin), tells the area's story. Guest AccessYou're welcome to wander through our garden and climb the hill behind the house for great views of the Kaipara Harbour. You can walk both ways along the beach - upriver to Tanoa where there's a marae and downriver to the next beach, around the bluff and to the next beach. Interaction with GuestsWe'll be around to answer questions and chat. The NeighborhoodBatley is at the end of a peninsula and you'll look across the harbour to Oneriri Peninsula. There are a handful of houses in the wider area - within about 4km - and two other houses on the farm. Getting AroundYou can drive to a couple of nearby towns and beach settlements - we'll be happy to give you guidance about this.

Secluded retreat at Batley, beside the Otamatea River, an arm of the Kaipara Harbour. Situated on a peninsula that's a sheep and beef farm and near historic Batley House, the cabin is protected from the prevailing south-west wind. You can enjoy coastal walks both up and downriver and it's safe and pleasant to swim around high tide. You can fish off the beach or the nearby point and there's a boat launching ramp nearby. The Kaipara Harbour is a snapper hatchery - we rarely come home without a feed or several. There's ample space to park your boat. Many people catch decent-sized fish from the beach. The area is rich with history - the house, built in stages from 1866, was a store, post office, and boarding house. There were fish factories and a flour mill here and a church and school. Just upriver is Tanoa Marae - and a whole lot more historic yarns to be told. The area's story is told in Rae's book, 'Love at the End of the Road' (Penguin Books) and the farm has featured on Country Calendar (August 2012) and on Marcus Lush's 'North' programme - he's descended from the first settlers.
