The SpaceThe beautiful views from the wrap around deck, the upper deck, the kitchen and bedroom windows is what makes our space absolutely magnificent. The cabin itself is quaint, cozy and comfortable! Guest AccessYou will be able to walk to the center of town off the point of the property which is about 1 mile. Capital Reef National Park is approximately 10 miles from home. There is also some hiking and biking you can do from the house. Interaction with GuestsYou can call or email Kevin and Jill with any questions that might come up. We will respond as quickly as possible. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood has a few homes, not many are occupied full time. Most homes are on an acre to 14 acre lots which gives a feeling of spaciousness for anyone who is visiting. Our home with a view is unique because it sits up above all of the other homes so there are not any interruptions of our views. Getting AroundGetting around is so simple in Torrey. You can either drive from the house, ride your bike or walk. All so easy and relaxing from this house with a grand view. Other Things to NoteThere is the original kitchen which means there is not a dishwasher as of yet. However, the view from the kitchen window makes doing the dishes a joy. The warmth of the cabin, if the weather is cold, comes from a wood stove that you are able to use when it seems fitting. There is also a large fire pit outside that is fun for the evenings. There is wifi and cell service, but be for-warned that AT&T works well from the cabin, other phone plans not so well. There is shampoo, body wash, hair dryer, towels, and most of the kitchen essentials necessary for preparing a magnificent breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. There is a brand new barbecue set up near the front deck and fire pit. On the upper east deck there are 4 chairs and a couple of tables where you can sit and watch the sunrise and/or sunset. This house is not as famous for the home itself, but is completely famous for the views from the house and 5 acres it sits on. Many locals have made the comment that the home is on the best piece of property in the area. Of course Kevin and I agree.

The NeighborhoodThe gateway to Capitol Reef National Park, the pretty little tree-filled town of Torrey is one of Southern Utah's jewels. The town was settled in the 1880's by Mormon pioneers. Sand Creek, flowing from Thousand Lake Mountain attracted the settlers as a good source of water for their families and crops. No doubt they appreciated the magnificence of Thousand Lake Mountain, as a beautiful edifice as well as a grass-filled home for their livestock. Legend has it that Torrey was named after one of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, Colonel Torrey. Torrey has had many famous visitors, among them John Wesley Powell, Butch Cassidy, Zane Grey, Maynard Dixon and Wallace Stegner. Torrey is currently home for an eclectic group of people. There is a mixture of the descendants of the pioneers and a variety of newcomers, many of whom like to hike and explore the vast surroundings of mountains & canyons & deserts & rivers. Capitol Reef National Park is a hiker's park with a myriad of trails for casual walking outings or serious hiking adventures. Hiking in Capitol Reef is pleasant all year and the vastness of Capitol Reef assures one of quiet and solitude. The history of the human presence in Capitol Reef is fascinating and everywhere, from the rock art lining the canyon walls to the orchards along the Fremont River. Boulder Mountain, part of Dixie National Forest is a massive green expanse of pine forests, meadows and lakes.7000 to 11,000 feet elevation. Hiking trails, numerous lakes known for abundant populations of brook trout, and views filled with blue sky and red canyon country reaching beyond the Colorado River. Boulder Mountain is within minutes of Torrey and a favorite spot for everyone. Thousand Lake Mountain Its face of exposed red sandstone layers provides lovely red canyons on its lower slopes for hiking and exploring. Higher, both steep and gentle slopes of open meadows with huge clusters of aspen and tall pines allow for pleasurable travel on foot, horseback, bicycle or ATV. Thousand Lake Mountain borders Fish Lake Mountain on the north and Capitol Reef National Park on the south. Torrey, within walking distance, lies at the base of Thousand Lake Mountain which rises from 7000 to 11,000 feet. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get to our home. There isn't any public transportation available. Other Things to NoteThere is a binder with some of our favorite places to visit along with some maps available for your viewing.

The SpaceAs you can see from the photos, we are set back about half a mile from Hwy 24. The property is set on the Fremont River to the south and red rock cliffs to the north. The river is small by eastern, or European standards, but it maintains a host of wildlife. Guest AccessThe full daylight apartment has a private entrance and private (albeit gravel) driveway. Parking for three vehicles below and additional parking in front of the main house. Interaction with GuestsWe'll be available most of the time, but a friend is nearby to help with anything you might need, from a food item to directions, suggestions, or help with the apartment. We'd love to visit with you if you're up to it but want to give you as much privacy as you'd like. It's a pleasure for us to meet folks from around the country and the world. The NeighborhoodTorrey is one of the sweetest, prettiest, tiniest western towns you're likely to see. We love it here. No close neighbors but close to town and the national park. There is only one liquor store in the county -- it's in Bicknell, 8 miles west of us. Getting AroundThere's not much to know about getting around because Torrey is so small. But in the guest manual, on the coffee table, there is everything you need to know. Lots of brochures, books, maps, etc. for our area as well as other national parks nearby, are on the desk. Other Things to NoteIf you arrive when we're not at home, we'll leave the door open. As you approach the house, go around on the west side and follow the curving driveway down to the apartment.

You can hike in or near Capitol Reef with the red rocks, lizards and cactus or you can hike into an alpine lake high on Boulder Mountain to enjoy some trout fishing. Getting AroundNo public transit of any kind in this area. Be careful relying on GPS directions as the maps are not updated and as accurate as in larger populated areas and cell phone service is spotty or non existent in lots of places.

The SpaceThe main cabin is a cozy, artsy building with an open kitchen and dining space, a big fireplace with plenty of seating, puzzles, games, books, and an audio-system with XM radio. If you need more space, or want some privacy, open up the log cabin. The patio is a great place to relax at the end of a long day outdoors and start a fire in the fire-pit. Or play pool a game of pool or pinball in the shed. On cold days, warm up inside with the large sand-stone fireplace. The main cabin has two bedrooms: a queen bed in the master, and two twin beds in the second bedroom. The log cabin has a double bed on the main floor, and a futon in the loft (which is open to the main floor). Guest AccessTwo cabins, patio, billiard and pinball shed, laundry room, apple orchard. Interaction with GuestsI will be available by telephone and through Airbnb throughout your stay, but live in Salt Lake so cannot provide on-site help. Other Things to NoteDogs are great: we have a big field for catch, and lots of tennis balls. Just let me know and I'll be sure that dog bowls are there for you. No puppies, please. If you need to sleep more people, there are cots in the main cabin's hallway closet.

The SpaceThe apartment is rustic with all wood and/or rock interior. There is a queen size bed that can sleep 2 and a couch that can sleep one small-medium adult or child comfortably. Apartment and bathroom are not wheelchair accessible. There are a few stairs to navigate coming in to the apt. and also up to the kitchen and bathroom. Bathroom is attached to the kitchen and is small but functional, with a custom-tiled walk-in shower. The small kitchen has an electric 4 burner stove top and oven, a toaster, and a small dormitory style refrigerator with small freezer section. The kitchen is stocked with basic dishes needed to cook and eat, a few spices, and food for cooking hot oatmeal, and/or cold cereal. Coffee and tea and fruit, when in season, are available as well. Breakfast will not be served, rather simple breakfast foods are available for you to prepare, if you choose. There is a wood burning stove as well as an electric heater. Electric heater should be pulled away from wall when using. If using the wood burning stove remember to pull the flue out just a little to get it started and going well. Fire starting materials and wood will be available for your convenience. Please take all precautions when starting and using a fire. If you need advice, please ask. Our BnB is just across the street from a fringe wooded area, where deer often bed down at night. Our east window faces the woods and sometimes you can see deer coming and going to our orchard property or to other places in the neighborhood. The deer frequent all parts of the property, eating fruit from the orchard in season, alfalfa, and wild greens in the yard. The fruit orchard and the canopy of mature trees in Torrey, also brings in an abundance of birds for viewing. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the apartment, which is located on the left side of the house when you are on the street facing the house. Park on the left of the house and come in the 1st back door, which is the apartment door. The hosts live in the larger portion of the house (second back door), which is attached, but completely separate with separate entrance. The apartment includes a large bedroom/living room space with a dining table, a kitchenette, and a small bathroom with a custom tiled shower. There is not a bathtub in the bathroom and there is no wheelchair access to the toilet or shower. Guests will have access to most of the .83 acre property, except the north yard, the front porch of house, and the garage. There is a fire-pit with wood bench seating in the backyard. Guests are welcome to build a fire as well, as long as the fire is safely put out when not in use. Guests can also enjoy the orchard behind the firepit, and the older orchard in the "garden" through the gate just south of the garage. There are lawn chairs set up in a few places and guests are welcome to move them around as desired. We have 27 fruit trees, apples, apricots & plums that you are welcome to help yourself to during your stay. Interaction with GuestsWe very much enjoy meeting our guests when we are in town, and we do our best to meet each guest at the apartment soon after you arrive. If our schedules work out, we'd love to sit in the yard or house with you and chat. However, we'll also be happy to give you whatever privacy you need. We do travel at times and then are not available on site. Feel free to knock on our door, call, or message us any time with questions. We are both nature enthusiasts and love sharing the beauty of the area with guests. Joy is a licensed Psychologist in Utah with a private practice in Torrey and may be available for a counseling session, an Opening to Nature and Yourself Session, a nature walk around Torrey, and/or a bird watching session for a fee. Bernie makes and sells solar ovens and solar roasted coffee. He is also a musician in a local band and loves to play music around the campfire as well. The NeighborhoodThe apartment is set down in the valley of Torrey, between Boulder Mountain to the south and Thousand Lakes Mountain to the north. North views are of the redrock cliffs and knolls of Torrey, with Thousand Lakes Mountain above. Torrey's elevation is 6837 ft. above sea level. Torrey has a beautiful combination of redrock cliffs, knolls, Pinyon/Juniper forest, and sagebrush/rabbitbrush desert scrub. The area has been referred to as high desert and/or cold desert, due to it's elevation and cool temperatures fall through spring. The apartment sits opposite an open lot with a small wooded area that deer often bed down in at night, a meadow, and a small wetland area, based on the irrigation ditch that runs through town. This open natural land so close to the apartment brings wildlife and an abundance of birds into the area and property. We have kept our yard free of pesticides and let it grow longer than most do, to facilitate our yard being used by the local animals and birds for food, habitat, nesting material, etc. We have noticed that the birds, deer, ourselves, the ants, and the squirrels have all been eating from the 90 year old apricot trees just outside the apt. door. We are happy to share our property with our "deer friends and neighbors," the deer and other animals. Because the mountains and plateaus surrounding Torrey rise to nearly 11,000 feet, the town rarely experiences the heat that much of Southern Utah does. We do get monsoon rains occasionally -- mostly in July and August. If temperatures do get hot during the day in July and August, the nights cool off quickly. To the East, the Torrey valley drops down into the red rock country of Capitol Reef National Park (11 miles away), to approximately 5,500 feet in elevation. The Navajos and Utes referred to the beautiful multicolored rock of the "waterpocket fold" and surrounding area, as "the land of the sleeping rainbow." Torrey is centrally located for many Southern Utah adventures. Accessible within 1.5-2 hours drive are parts of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and the canyons of the San Rafael Swell. Moab, with Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, is about 3 hours east. The Escalante Canyons are approximately 2 hours south. Bryce and Zion National Parks are about 3 hours south. Boulder Mountain to the South, Thousand Lakes Mountain to the North, and the Fish Lake area to the west and north, all have plenty of mountain lakes, streams and wooded areas. The area around Torrey is stunning in it's natural beauty and is a wonderful get-a-way from the city or the suburbs. Come to the "land of the sleeping rainbow." Enter the land of your soul. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation. A car is needed, and a vehicle with high clearance can get you to more remote areas. However, parking is never a problem. There are 2 shuttle services in town that will take you to Capitol Reef or a number of trail-heads in the area if needed. Other Things to NoteTorrey is a very quiet and peaceful town and amenable to walking or bike riding. The apartment has no air conditioning. It is rarely needed in Torrey, because of our elevation (6837 ft.). However, there are occasions in August and July when it does get hot. In that case, I will supply a standing fan to help move the air around. If days are hot, leave the windows open at night to let the cool air in and close them in the morning to keep hot air out. There is no cable or Dish TV. The 21 in. TV is attached to an antenna and has 13 broadcast channels, such as ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS TV channels, etc. The town of Torrey is the gateway town to Capitol Reef National Park, 11 miles west of the park. Most businesses close at the end of October and open again in the spring. The area is beautiful in all four seasons. If you are coming in the late fall, winter, or early spring, come prepared with the provisions you will need. Amenities include: Spring through Fall- A coffee shop and restaurant at the intersection of highway 24 and scenic highway 12, several restaurants in the area, (two that also serve alcohol and have seasonal weekend live music), the Chuckwagon General Store, 2 art galleries, gift shops, a gas station, and an auto repair shop. There is a small laundry at the Chuckwagon in the center of town in the tourist season (spring through October). Memorial day through the end of October there is a wonderful Farmer's Market at the center of Torrey on Saturdays from 4-6 p.m., featuring local food and other products. If you are coming from the east, Mesa Farm Market in Caineville sells homemade goat cheeses, yogurt, and bread, coffee, fresh garden vegetables in season, and fresh fruit from their orchard also in season. You may purchase some groceries (limited selection) at the Chuck Wagon General Store in Torrey (Spring through October). You may need to purchase groceries before you arrive, either in the town of Loa (18 miles west of Torrey, Royal's grocery store is open until 8:30, closed on Sundays), or else before you get in the area.
