The place is filled with plenty of attractions and one can explore them conveniently. Some other notable attractions in Marsh Harbour are the Cherokee Sound, Little Harbor and the Crossing Rocks. ABACO Lay Of The Land Situated two hundred miles east of Palm Beach, Florida, the Abacos are the most northerly group of Bahamian Islands, exposing the 10,000 residents to cold fronts from November to March. Boasting the third highest population of the Bahamian Islands, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly(URL HIDDEN)The island of Abaco is 130 miles long stretching from Crown Haven in the north to Sandy Point in the south.  The “mainland” is Great Abaco with a curve of cays a few miles offshore creating the protected Sea of Abaco. Though the majority of these tiny islands are uninhabited, the larger cays including Green Turtle, Great Guana, Man-O-War and Elbow are worth a visit using the regular scheduled ferry service. In the north are the small settlements of Crown Haven (catch the ferry to Grand Bahama from here) and Fox Town. South of the Little Abaco causeway is Coopers Town, originally settled in the 1870’s by the Coopers from Grand Bahama, with the 900 residents working primarily in the fishing industry.  South of Coopers Town on the S.C. Bootle Highway is the Treasure Cay Airport, the Green Turtle Cay Ferry and the resort area of Treasure Cay.  Named for the fleet of more than 15 Spanish treasure galleons that sank off its shores in the late 1500’s, Treasure Cay is Abaco’s second largest settlement. With a large marina, an 18-hole golf course and some of the best beaches in the Bahamas, Treasure Cay is an ideal vacation spot for just about any traveler. Thirty-five minutes south of Treasure Cay is the commercial center of Abaco, Marsh Harbour.(URL HIDDEN) Home to the islands only stop light, Marsh Harbour is the Bahamas third largest settlement with about 6,000 residents.  Marsh Harbour offers a wide selection of comfortable and reasonably priced accommodation, the largest airport on the island, shopping, dining, banking, medical clinic and supplies for just about anything you might need, including an Internet café! As you head south from Marsh Harbour, the population thins and settlements become smaller.  Little Harbour, quiet even by Abaco standards is worth the forty-five minute drive south from Marsh Harbour. This picturesque settlement is known as the home of the acclaimed bronze and wood sculptor Randolf Johnston and Pete’s Pub.  Just a few miles from Little Harbour lies the charming settlement of Cherokee Sound, well known for its extensive bonefishing flats. At the southernmost tip of Abaco is Sandy Point, a quiet commercial fishing village that has fuel and a grocery store. Where to Stay There is so much to choose from on Abaco your best bet is to first determine the type of holiday you are looking for and then which part of Abaco is going to offer the activities and amenities you want. To narrow the search, determine if you want to be on one of the outlying cays where you get around by golf cart, a smaller settlement in southern Abaco or be a little closer to the action in Treasure Cay or Marsh Harbour. Green Turtle Cay is a beautiful destination with the ferry leaving regularly just north of Treasure Cay(URL HIDDEN)There is a wide range of accommodation offered but no matter where you are bonefishing is just a golf cart ride away. Treasure Cay offers a true tropical vacation experience with a world famous beach, restuarants, stores, golf and tennis as you buzz around in your golf cart.  There are a variety of homes, townhouses and condos to choose from.  If you want to fish the northern end of Abaco, Treasure Cay is an ideal location. Leisure Lee is another nice location, locted just south of Treasure harbour with some beautifuyl homes for rent(URL HIDDEN)Bonefishing is literally minutes from your doorstep. The largest town on Abaco, Marsh Harbour, serves as the hub for the island with all the services and amenities you would expect.  There are a wide variety of rentals available from economy bungalows to the grandest of water front homes. We stayed at the Wheelhouse on Eastern Shores, which is perfect for two couples. Twenty miles south of Marsh Harbour are the settlements of Little Harbour and Cherokee Sound. Small and remote, both places offer a few homes and cottages to rent. Marsh Harbour is the heart of activity n Great Abaco with a number of resorts, homes and condos to select from(URL HIDDEN)If renting on the Eastern Shore you are walking distance from the ferries to the quaint cays of Man O War and Elbow and only another ten minute walk to downtown Marsh Harbour. Little Harbour is a beautiful protected bay with a number of homes to rent and quality fishing South of Cherokee Sound is the tiny enclave of Casuarina Point where you will find a cluster of charming homes to rent in the midst of seaside tranquility. Sandy Point on the southern end has a few places to rent and is in the heart of bonefish country. As there are no shops in casuarina Point , groceries and meals will be problem without a car .(URL HIDDEN) Before heading south, do your shopping at the major grocery stores in Marsh Harbour , Maxwell's . Where To Fish There are countless areas for the DIY fisherman to explore on Abaco but to date we have focused on the area around Little Harbor and Cherokee Sound.  From Little Harbor there is good fishing in Robinson Bight which is immediately adjacent and is an excellent area to explore with your kayak.  Farther to the south is Cherokee Sound providing miles of flats to wade, is easily reached by starting at the pier where the The Sand Bar Grill is located and wading south and Casurina Point.Green Turtle Cay is another excellent choice for DIY fisherman with several good flats within walking distance of New Plymouth.  The closest flats are the “Town Flats” three minutes from town offering approximately one mile of wadeable flats.  The next is Sand Dollar flat in Gilliam Bay which you can reach within 15 minutes of walking.  The third flat is at Coco Bay which can be reached by golf cart from New Plymouth.  There are a variety of other flats and shorelines to fish and well worth exploring.  One of the attractions of fishing the flats of Green Turtle Cay is the size of the fish……they can get very large here. For the DIY fisherman there is very little access to the leeward side flats called the Marl but it can be accessed if you have your kayak at the boat ramp at the Cross Road which is located at the very narrowest part of Abaco and at Freddie’s Cut which is located just north of the Neem farm on an old logging (URL HIDDEN) of the greatest bonefishing area’s in the Bahamas are the “Marls” of Great Abaco.  Here you will find mile after mile of flats, mangroves and creeks providing the perfect habitat for bonefish.  However it is not easy to access and it is best to fish it with a guide who knows the area.  For DIY fisherman I would highly recommend that you budget one or two days with a guide to fish the Marls.  For at least one day hire  Capt. Joe Pritchard out of JIC Boat Rentalsand have him take you out to the marls.Another option in Abaco is to rent a boat for a week which provides you access to an untold number of flats.  You can rent boats from  JIC Boats Rentals,(URL HIDDEN)Sea Horse Boat Rentals  in Marsh Harbor,  Rich’s Rentals  and  Island Marine  in Elbow Cay.Cherokee Sound Bonefish Video Fishing Information Great Abaco is one of those places where you can bring your spouse and family, get in some good bonefishing and everyone has fun.  Marsh Harbor, Treasure Cay are great places to stay and offer all the services and activities you could want while places like Turtle Cay and Little Harbor are more laid back.  We choose to stay a little farther south in Little  Harbor where access to the flats and bonefishing is a little better. Most of the fish you are chasing in Little Harbor and Cherokee Sound see their fair share of fisherman and flies, so they can be both spooky and picky. You will see lots of fish to cast to on the incoming tides but they may frustrate you a little.  We typically cast flies sized #4 but you may have to go a little smaller with long leaders.  When the fish are spooky I have been tying more with rabbit and rubber legs, the rabbit helps the fly land very softly and moves in the water with only the slightest retrieve. These are great areas to explore with your kayak and to get farther away I would recommend renting a boat in Marsh Harbor for a week and use it to access those flats you can’t reach by foot or kayak. Getting There The airports at Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour are a little more than an hour’s flight from South Florida and are serviced by several commercial airlines. Subject to the carrier, flights can be found most days of the week between Ft. Lauderdale (United, Sky Bahamas) Miami (American Eagle) West Palm Beach (Bahamasair) Orlando (American, United, US Airways, Bahamasair) and Nassau (Bahamasair, Sky Bahamas). The world's fourth largest barrier reef system runs almost 100 miles from Walker's Cay (the "top" of The Abacos) to Gilligan horizontalabout 20 miles south of Elbow Cay. As a matter of fact, about 5% of the world's coral reefs are located in the Bahamas. Immediately to the west of the reef system, The Abacos' exquisite string of offshore cays extends about 85 miles from Walker's to just off Little Harbour. The Abacos' Sandy Cay, Fowl Cay and Pelican Cay National Park underwater preserves are protected by the Bahamian government and offer some of the finest and most colorful shallow water diving in the entire Caribbean area. The Abacos' extensive reef system and hundreds of under- or undiscovered offshore cays combine to create one of the world's safest, most exciting and most rewarding boating, diving and snorkeling areas (please click for an Abaco islands MAP or Central Abacos SATELLITE IMAGERY). Of the 3,000 coral islands and reefs that make up the Bahamas, only about 20 are inhabited. -------------------------------------------------------------- Shore diving opportunities throughout The Abacos Almost all the Abacos' Cays offer shore diving opportunities with reefs and coral heads as close as 1' below the surface and 5 yards from the beach (esp. Manjack, Great Guana and Green Turtle Cays). Anywhere you Gilligan v aerialexplore Abacos' reefs, you'll see a rainbow-streaked underwater panorama - a fascinating and exciting variety of marine life, with some of the best sights found in shallow depths of 30 to 50 feet. While it's illegal to use scuba equipment to catch any fish or other marine life, snorkels and compressor rigs are permitted. Due to the islands' occasionally turbulent past and their proximity to long-ago trade routes, a wide variety of wrecks can easily be found along The Abacos' outer reefs. The historic San Jacinto (the first U.S. steamship) sank in 1865 in the Green Turtle Cay area, and the Union warship "Adirondack" which sank on the reef near Man-O-War Cay in 1862, are two of the most popular wrecks. -------------------------------------------------------------- Warm waters and excellent visibility The crystaline ocean waters surrounding The Abacos range (on average) from 70F to 86F degrees. Dozens of spectacular (and relatively UNexplored) snorkel and SCUBA dive sites are easily accessible (within 30 minutes) by boat from just about anywhere in the Central Abacos. Depending on your location, the time of year and weather conditions, underwater visibility commonly ranges up to 150-200 feet. No matter which settlement or cay you choose to visit, a dive operator is almost always close-by. Whether you're exploring the Sea of Abaco (the 2- to 5- mile wide protected "island highway" which runs the entire length of The Abacos chain) or the offshore reefs, you'll won't loose sight of land since the islands are rarely more than a few mile apart. -------------------------------------------------------------- Boat rentals are readily available Modern, easy-to-operate and fully equipped boat rentals are available in 'most all populated areas of The Abacos (in Green turtle, try Reef Rentals ... in the Marsh Harbour area, try Rainbow Rentals), and most are supplied with the almost mandatory bimini top. Once your vacation dates are firm (the sooner the better), plan to immediately reserve your boat through a dependable rental company. To enhance your "landside" Abaco adventure, golfcarts are now available on many of the cays (about $35 day). Carts should also be reserved as much in advance as possible. -------------------------------------------------------------- You can be underwater just 100 minutes from South Florida If you know what you're doing and where you're going, and carefully coordinate your flight with the appropriate island ferry, you can actually be under our gin-clear waters just 100 minutes after leaving Florida. Better than just about anywhere else in the world, the Abacos' warm, transparent and safe waters encourage experienced as well as novice divers to explore the unparalleled underwater reefs and thriving communities of rainbow-streaked tropical fish inhabiting our underwater world! -------------------------------------------------------------- Dive operators Additionally, if you'd rather not "do it yourself", several experienced dive operators are available for tours, excursions, training, certification and charter in just about every one of the Abacos' settlements or cays. Two of the Abacos' most popular dive operators are Abaco Dive Adventures (at Boat Harbour / Abaco Beach Resort) and Lincoln Jones Island Adventures (if you're staying on Green Turtle or Treasure Cay). -------------------------------------------------------------- Local dive sites The following dive site descriptions are designed to give the very briefest of "tastes" to travelers looking to combine extraordinary underwater adventure with a one-of-a-kind island vacation experience. A few representative Abacos dive sites: Green Turtle Cay (the next Cay directly across the Sea of Abaco from Treasure Cay) Beach access diving and snorkeling from Green Turtle's eastern beaches, especially on the northern end of the cay, is exceptional. While the barrier reef should be accessed by small boat, the inner reef system offers enough underwater scenery to keep the novice as well as experienced snorkeler occupied for weeks. Right off the beach on the northern end of the cay, the inner reef is as close as 1 foot below the surface at low tide, and The Abacos' tides rarely vary by more than 3.5 feet Great Guana Cay (the next Cay north of Scotland Cay) Guana offers miles of spectacular near-shore reefs and dive spots as well as almost deserted stretches of dune-lined beaches. Some of the most spectacular diving to be found in The Abacos is easily discovered on Guana's northernmost beaches. Shore diving is as easy as it comes, and the rainbow-streaked rewards for novices as well as experienced snorkelers and divers makes this a "must see" site Johnny's Cay (between Elbow and Man-O-War Cays) This dive spot is great for snorkeling on the outer reef or just offshore of Johnny's. Although local knowledge is always helpful when you're exploring new dive or snorkeling sites, common sense can guide experienced snorkelers to a huge variety of incredible sites in this relatively undiscovered undersea gallery. No Name Cay (the first Cay south of Green Turtle) No Name offers great beaches and equally impressive dive opportunities in water as shallow as 35'. Just a few miles south of Green Turtle Cay, the remains of the Adirondack lie in 35-50' of ginclear water. While not for absolute novices, this site offers a wide range of sea life and marine artifacts to explore, with two sites at 35 feet. During lobster season, this is a popular site for locals as well as Travelers to catch the increasingly scarce Bahamian lobster. Fowl Cay Government Preserve (North side of Man-O-War Cay) Set aside by the Bahamian government as a national Land and Sea Park, this (approximately) 3 square mile reserve is conveniently reached from most central Abacos cays and settlements. While the reefs and three 25' to 40' dive spots in untouched water are truly spectacular, if a "rage" is in the forecast (strong winds and subsequent rough sea conditions), the waters in this area can be rough. With a variety of tunnels and towers to explore, the sea life is abundant -- -almost as if it knows it is protected . The Adirondack (near Man-O-War Cay) The scattered remains of an old ship can be found in a little more than 30' of water. With cannons exposed and well preserved, The Adirondack is home to rainbows of fish and a huge variety of coral formations . Hole in the Wall (southernmost Great Abaco Island) The sites off Hole in the Wall are must shoot, "Kodak Moments" offering a variety of fascinating sights (sites?) including a huge coral head at 50 feet you can actually swim through! . Sandy Cay (about 2 miles north of Hidden Harbour) This is reported to be the location of the largest stand of elkhorn coral in the world.

The SpacePARROT PERCH at LONG BEACH is very spacious, bright and airy. It has high ceiling, lot of screened windows & doors and ceiling fans in all rooms. The master bedroom has French sliding windows opening on a pergola patio. The bathroom is on the other side of the corridor in front of the master bedroom. The living area is a large open space with a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area and a living area, During the day, we love to open all windows and screen doors and let the sea breeze come in. It is gorgeous and you can hear the surf from home. You may need the AC only during summer nights. I lived in Parrot Perch many summers and never used the AC but I am European. My American husband and our son, on the contrary, like the AC during the hot summer nights. You have the choice. We have European style "open air dryer" in the back garden - It is more fun and the laundry smells divine - and there is a big load washing machine in the laundry cabinet (on the side of the dining area). Enjoy the outdoor shower in the back garden to sand off after the beach. You will use it as a regular shower too as it is just delightful :) Guest AccessWe live in Charleston South Carolina. Parrot Perch in Abaco is our holiday home. During your stay, the all house and property is yours. Interaction with GuestsWe are always available to answer any questions regarding the house, your trip, the island, etc. We are both very passionate about the Abacos. Robert has been traveling there extensively since 2000. I lived and worked on the island for 3 amazing years. Kentrell Walker (Tony Russell's sister) will be your local contact during your stay at Parrot Perch. She works part time at the Delphi Club and lives in Crossing Rock village (3mns drive from Parrot Perch) with her husband Marvin and her 3 children. Kentrell cell: (phone number hidden) The NeighborhoodLONG BEACH is approximatively 30 miles (35 mins drive) SOUTH of Marsh Harbour (Abaco main city & main airport). Long Beach is just between Schooner Bay eco-friendly community and the native village of Crossing Rock. LONG BEACH IS SECLUDED AND OUT OF THE BEATEN PATH. It is absolute paradise when your dream is about tranquillity, a beautiful beach and beautiful nature. Island Homes community (the only community on Long Beach) is gorgeous and extremely friendly. Very few houses and all home owners in love with the place and respectful of its beauty.
