The SpaceOur cabin seems rustic, full of rough wood and handmade details that our father included when he built it in the 80s. But while seemingly rustic, it is warm, comfy, and charming. The downstairs has an ample living space with a living room (with working fireplace), dining room (seats 6 comfortably), bar area, kitchen, and one and a half baths. The full bath has a claw foot tub along with a shower. Adding to the cabin’s allure are two large outdoor porches. The back porch looks down on Campbell's Creek. It has 3 rocking chairs -- offering the perfect opportunity to surrender to nature and be lulled by the sounds of the Creek. The front porch includes a large retro cooler, benches, and a picnic table. The upstairs has two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen size bed while the adjoining bedroom has two twin beds. The upstairs greatest charm is each bedrooms' lovely balcony overlooking the forest. Here you can gaze at the stars and the moon as they play hide-n-seek among the trees. The upstairs also has a half bath. Among our cabin's many unique features is the wooden bridge our father built to cross Campbell's Creek. While the upstairs accommodates 4 people, there is a pull out couch downstairs that fits two small children or one adult. There is also ample room downstairs to fit an air bed. Guest AccessGuests have access to the entire cabin as well as its surrounding property and creek. Interaction with GuestsOne of the property owners will initially greet guests to give them keys and answer any questions. After that, guests are on their own. Although one of us is always a phone call away and can be at the cabin within minutes. The NeighborhoodTucked between Campbell’s Creek, Washington National Forest, and Jefferson National Forest, our cabin is ready for you to build wonderful memories. Only minutes away from the Appalachian Trail, historic Pharsalia, the Wintergreen Skii Resort, Crabtree Falls, Montebello’s fish hatchery, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Nelson 151’s fun breweries and wineries, our cabin offers you a respite from the hustle and bustle. At Campbell's Creek, you are never too far from adventure, exploration, history, and discovery. (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundThere is no public transportation available. Guests must arrive by car. Virginia's state highway's 29, 56, and 151 are the main thoroughfare, but the Skyline Drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is also only minutes away. The nearest airports are located in Charlottesville and Lynchburg. At the cabin, there is easy parking for 5 cars. Other Things to NoteAt our cabin, don't expect to stay in touch with the outside world. There is no internet, tv, or cell phone reception. A land line phone is available for local calls only.

The SpaceThis is our 4 year-old vacation cottage. It is on 5 acres just outside the Jefferson National Forest near the Blue Ridge Parkway on an isolated gravel-dirt road. The cottage has high ceilings and is sun-filled and spacious for 4 people. The bathroom has a bath/shower combination. There are two twin beds in the sleeping loft and one full bed in the bedroom. A 5th person could sleep on the couch or take the extra mattress off the full bed and put it on the floor in the living room. Extra sheets and towels are available in the drawers under both sides of the bed. There are huge windows in the downstairs bedroom so if you are light-sensitive, you may want to bring a sleeping mask. Guest AccessGuests will have the entire cottage. A modern kitchen, laundry and one full bath. And plenty of outdoor fun! Interaction with GuestsGuest will likely never see us. The NeighborhoodThere are a couple other cottages nearby, but only a few full-time residents in Chicken Hollow. A walk through our woods will reveal a tree house, swing, hammocks, swinging chairs and a lovely creek near the bottom edge of the property. Guests are welcome to use these at their own risk. The cottage is only 4 mountainous miles from the entrance to Wintergreen Resort's seasonal skiing and golfing (another 3 miles up the mountain to get to activities). It is about 4 miles from beautiful Sherando Lake where we often swim and hike. There is a nearby wilderness area in the Jefferson National Forest, the Appalachian Trail, and plenty of places to hike, road bike and mountain bike. Nelson county is becoming well known for its micro-breweries, wineries and even a cidery. These are about ten miles away. Getting AroundDIRECTIONS (also available in the House Manual printout) The best way to get to the cottage is to find your way to milepost 16 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near the hamlet of Love, VA. A cellular connection is not available immediately around the cottage and in some areas on the way to the cottage so you will want to have your stored or printed directions with you. If your GPS does not give you directions to 677 Chicken Hollow Rd., search for Love, VA. That will get you in the neighborhood and near milepost 16 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Most people arrive via Route 64 and will get off at Exit 96 (Lyndhurst/Waynesboro). Go toward Lyndhurst. The numbers change: 624 changes to 664 changes to 814. Travel about 10 miles and pass Sherando Lake. Continue past Sherando Lake for another 4-5 miles until arriving at the top of the mountain and the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway. Once at milepost 16 on the Parkway, you should see the intersection with the gravelly Campbells Mountain Rd. (814) . The road the cottage is on, Chicken Hollow Rd., is 1/16th of a mile from the intersection of the Parkway and Campbells Mountain Rd. From the Parkway, go down Campbells Mountain Rd. 1/16th of a mile and then immediately turn right onto dirt road 684 (unmarked Chicken Hollow Rd). The cottage will be 7/10ths of a mile down Chicken Hollow Rd. on the left. The road to the cottage is usually accessible with a "regular" car. It is plowed usually within one day of a snowfall, but a "front-wheel" or all-wheel drive vehicle is best during heavy snows or very wet or icy weather. It is possible to get "snowed in" (e.g. end up waiting for the plow). Guests without an all wheel drive vehicle can park in the upper parking lot that can be found on the left side of the road 200 feet before getting to the driveway gate. Parking in this upper lot is advisable even in good weather for vehicles without all wheel drive. If using the upper lot, you can walk down the road to the driveway. Please bring a flashlight as our driveway is dark and the path (and road) to the cottage are not lit. Other Things to NoteWe have many books about the area available to read in the cottage as well as games for all ages in the ottomans (Scrabble, Monopoly, memory games, puzzles, etc.). We have a full kitchen and guests are welcome to use the spices available in the turntable under the microwave. We usually bring drinking water with us. We should have some there for you. On occasional late Sunday mornings in warm weather our neighbor (cannot see his cottage) has target practice with his hunting group. He is a great neighbor and experienced marksman. We do not want our guests to be alarmed if they hear shots!

On the bank of the Piney River, Sycamore Shade is a great place to relax on the deck or hammock. Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river. There are fishing tackle, snorkel masks and inner tubes for enjoying the river. The house is nestled between the Cardinal and the Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Religious Range. The George Washington National Forest adjoins the property. Excursions can include hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail, four-wheeling up the Shoe Creek jeep trail, or mountain- biking the gravel roads that follow the river. Wintergreen ski resort is a 25 minute drive away. There are numerous wineries, breweries and orchards nearby, and to check for festivals and tastings at these go to The Nelson County visitor’s website. The trilliums laurel and jack-in-the-pulpits bloom in spring. Summer is just fun because the water is warm enough (but still mountain spring fed cool) to tube or swim. Fall is spectacular because the trees are ablaze with autumn color, and the brookies can be seen spawning from the deck. Watching a movie from the extensive library of DVDs with a fire going in the woodstove is the way to relax in winter after an afternoon of skiing at Wintergreen. It is always about 10 degrees cooler at Sycamore Shade than it is in the city, and the river makes a tranquil sound splashing over the rocks any time of year. Regardless of the season, when you pull into the driveway at Sycamore Shade, you will decompress and feel the peace and calm that that this home by a running stream always produces. Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions. Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted under the reviews section a little further down on this page, or you can click the rates tab above. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks! High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway. ***FOUR-WHEEL/ ALL WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED*** This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right across the street at the end of our long, gravel driveway, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. Cornhole and horseshoes are provided, as well as a hammock and even a guitar for fire pit sing-a-longs......(musical talent not provided....but inspiration is guaranteed) In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating. The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. Once again, it's small, but cozy, so you'd better like the person/people you're staying with...or at least plan on liking them by the time you leave ; ) ..... There's a porch with a great view, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. *Just added* --new deck for totally private sunbathing....or you could eat breakfast, lunch or dinner there too. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only..... we're thinking of adding an outdoor shower, but feel free to use the hose for now! In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games. Usually the kids like to be upstairs, but they're welcome to pitch a tent and sleep outside if they're brave! Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind. There are indoor and outdoor pools at the Wintergreen Spa, which is just up the street. Golf just up the street at Devils Knob Golf Course (18 holes - closed in winter months) or down in the valley at Stoney Creek Golf Course (27 holes). We even provide a priority-parking pass that you can use to park right next to the ski slopes, which is especially nice on busy weekends. A shuttle bus is provided by Wintergreen to take guests down to the ski area. This bus stops at High Ridge Court, which is the condo building just before us. You can cut through the parking lot and catch the shuttle at the High Ridge Court entrance sign. We hope you will come visit, relax, and enjoy your family and friends! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Resort policies prohibit motorcycles and RVs.
