The SpaceOur beloved shotgun was built two years before the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 (yep, the same one that inspired the song "Louisiana") so she's no stranger to the ups, downs, and occasional dunkings this unique city endures. And like most of it's older denizens, she shows traces here and there of her experiences, but remains beautiful just the same. We have left this half of our classic shotgun double as true to it's original origins as possible (though Katrina may have strangely been the best thing that ever happened to the bathroom). We like to think of the cracks in the plaster as laugh lines and worn spots in the floors as character. What we're trying to say is that she's older and we like her that way. It's a cozy, warm, relaxed atmosphere. A well loved, local place to unwind after a day of exploring this Southern Gothic Fairytale we call home. Guest AccessWe mentioned the house is a "double barrel" shotgun, didn't we? For those unfamiliar with this this particular style of house, it means that the dwelling is narrow with the rooms arranged in a lineal fashion, one behind the other from front to back, connected by doorways and a singular hall. It's double because it's identical twin is attached in the form of a duplex. At one time, the house was considered a double "railroad apartment", but we'll save the class on post-Civil War Southern architecture for another time. We're offering the "right barrel" of the shotgun, a single family dwelling that houses four people comfortably. The rooms are arranged as you see in the photos, one leading into another. So be aware, if you're sleeping in the front bedroom, then your traveling companion(s) will pass through your room to get to the living area and front door and you will pass through your companion(s) back bedroom to get to the kitchen. The bathroom, linen closet and washer/dryer are in the center hallway, the "neutral ground". The other side of the duplex is currently occupied by other tenants, who share the backyard. But no worries, they're pleasant people. And don't worry if this sounds a lot more difficult than it is, but describing a house where all the rooms are in a row is harder than we thought it would be! Interaction with GuestsEither one of us or our daughter Lauren will meet you with keys when possible or make arrangements to leave them for you if our schedules don't sync. We're happy to answer any and all questions you may have and we're only a message away if you need us. We'll always leave you with plenty of coffee and tea, a few Abitas in the fridge, and some snacks to nibble on if the need arises. We ask that you make yourself at home, feel free to utilize the amenities there for you. Wandering around New Orleans can be exhausting, so take advantage of the less hectic Uptown location, relax and recharge. We don't hover, but we're always happy to make a suggestion if you need one, even if it's just to rehydrate (theres water in the fridge for you too). The NeighborhoodThere is so much to love about this neighborhood. Up and coming Freret is a moderate and nice walk. We love Cure for cocktails and Mojo for coffee and treats. St. Charles and the Streetcar is a very beautiful walk a few blocks away, with Audubon Park on the other side. If you're visiting Tulane for an event or to see your kids off, you could only be closer if you had a dorm room. The neighborhood is alive with college students from both Tulane and Loyola. It can be lively at times, which we've always found to be a good thing. The neighbors are friendly and can often be a great source of information about what is happening on any given day in town. Getting AroundParking is on-street and we provide a parking pass for you to use in your vehicle during your stay. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO LEAVE IT IN THE HOUSE UPON YOUR DEPARTURE. There are cabs and Uber is everywhere. The streetcar is a short walk up Palmer Avenue to St. Charles Avenue. Other Things to NoteAt this time, we have a full bed in the back room and twin beds in the front room, as pictured. We also prefer to keep the number of guests at no more than 4.
