I was weary at first and didn't know what to expect, but Gary made me feel very comfortable and provided me with so many resources that it made for an easy adjustment. The location in North Hollywood was very convenient with access to the freeway, shops, restaurants, etc. The other guests staying at the Chateau were great and provided me with a sense of close community I couldn't get by staying somewhere else. I attended Acting Corps during my stay and found out that many of my other suite mates were doing the same so it made it fun and interesting. I met people from all over the world there with all different backgrounds and ended up having a great experience. A++ ----------------- Gary was the nicest guy I had met in LA when I checked in. I went there because it was cheap like nothing else in LA and everyone was just like me, a stranger in pursuit a dream and themselves. It was a great stepping stone. ------------------ I was pleaseantly surprised by Chateau de Soleil - so much that I cancelled a two day reservation at another hostel and extended my stay at the Chateau. I found the manager - Gary - extremely helpful and chatty, and he provided me with assistance beyond the simple practicalities of the stay itself (such as directions, printing a few documents etc.). My stay was in the low season - there were plenty of open beds - which probably have given me a different experience than someone arriving in the peak season when the place is buzzing. The atmosphere is relaxed and most of the people living here were long-term residents who studied in the neighborhood (mainly actors, directors, dancers etc). If you're expecting to meet tons of new people to do things with and party all the time, then this place might not be for you (at least in the off-season ,can't speak for the peak season). On the other hand if you're looking for a good and cheap place to live along with a bunch of other nice people then I highly recommend you to consider staying at the Chateau. The location is not that bad, but don't expect to walk out the front door and be in the middle of all the action. Personally I didn't mind walking for 10-15 minuttes to and from the North Hollywood metro station. There's a police station right across the street, so you feel pretty safe - safer than a lot of other places I can imagine. ---------------

Getting to know the North Hollywood (NoHo) Arts District isn’t difficult. Just think of it as an urban cocktail of bohemian and yuppie with a twist of edginess, an enclave of all things artistic — painting, ceramics, theatre, even television. But at its heart, NoHo is an artist’s community, and it’s becoming more and more close-knit, drawing visitors and locals who have art in their blood. “You can stroll along the street and see a real variety of people,” says Nancy Bianconi, the publisher of (website hidden). “You can see actors rehearsing their lines together, you’ll see dancers figuring out their dance patterns, you’ll see guitarists practicing their music.” New residential developments are attracting more tenants. New businesses and restaurants — best described as über-eclectic — are setting up shop here. More and more people are utilizing the Metro to get here. And most importantly, the arts scene is simply exploding. In particular, the NoHo Arts District has made its claim to fame as a major performing arts powerhouse, offering a concentration of 22 live theatres. The theatres present the classics as well as new, experimental works. Because of their limited size, NoHo theatres possess an intimacy that’s difficult to find elsewhere. The centerpiece of the theatre scene is undoubtedly the El Portal Theatre, which originally opened in 1926 as a vaudeville and silent movie theatre. Its historic art deco marquee still shines proudly to this day. The structure houses three live theatres, with 42, 95 and 350 seats, as well as its own art gallery, the Judith Kaufman Gallery. Deaf West Theatre shares in NoHo's share of history, featuring deaf, hard-of-hearing actors as voice and American Sign Language are incorporated into poignant productions. In addition to the area’s reputable theatre scene, it’s also the eclectic mix of art that makes it so special. Artists often gather around the NoHo Arts Center and Lankershim Arts Center, two of the area’s most well-known cultural landmarks. Artists continually show their work at NoHo Gallery LA, part of the Lankershim Arts Center's diverse selection of displays. Despite the wide array of mediums, there’s always one thing in common: the art continually pushes the limits. As a testimony to NoHo’s variety, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences — home to the Emmy Awards — also resides in the district. The organization pays tribute to many television personalities, including Carol Burnett, Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby and Mary Tyler Moore, with bronze sculptures in an open-air garden, which also features a 27-foot replica of the Emmy Award. Millennium Dance Complex is also a popular spot for visitors, as the dance studio has hosted regular sessions with celebrities such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson and Wade Robson. Perhaps the best part of NoHo is the interaction between its artists and the community, something that visitors can experience through NoHo Tours. Participants can become artists or dancers for a day, or mingle with actors backstage after seeing a play. Visitors can see this hands-on attitude at NoHo’s arts festivals. Once a year in mid-May, the two-day NoHo Theatre and Arts Festival, the largest of its kind in California, celebrates with live music on outdoor stages, free plays and vignettes in its theatres. And each fall, the NoHo Scene Festival draws some 10,000 visitors to showcase the district’s artistic flavor. The festivals highlight the kind of work that happens every day in the NoHo Arts District, so no matter what time of year, intrepid art and a strong community are in store for the curious visitor. Guests have access to all items listed. I interact with my guests as needed. There is a major Metro stop with both buses and trains two long blocks away - North Hollywood Station. Guest AccessEverything listed in my profile. Interaction with GuestsI interact as needed, giving my guests plenty of freedom to enjoy their trip. The NeighborhoodThis neighborhood is wonderful because it's so eclectic - race, gender, families, industry, arts... It's a real taste of Los Angeles in this little corner of the great big city. Getting AroundA major station of the MTA (LA's public transportation system) is two long blocks away.

The SpaceThe place is a 600 square foot one bedroom, located above our garage. The building is detached from the rest of the house, and it has a separate entrance. You will feel like you have your own space and privacy. You may hear the garage door go up and down, but it's not loud at all. Guest AccessYou'll have 24 hour access to the pay washer and dryer behind the garage - you'll just have to share it with us once in a while :) It's $1.00 to wash and $.75 to dry. Interaction with GuestsIf you ever need anything, it's easy for us to help, because we live in the front house. Please don't be shy about asking how things work, or if you need additional items. We're often working in our back yard, so you will probably see us from time to time. Please don't be a stranger! We love getting to know new people. The NeighborhoodThe house is blocks away from the North Hollywood Red Line train station (it is closer than the map shows). Check out the Los Angeles Metro website for maps and schedules. It is also about 10 minutes away from the Burbank Airport. Freeway access is blocks away - just hop on the 170 and you'll be on the 101 or 134 in seconds. The place is located very close to where the Airbnb map says it is, so if you need to determine how far we are from somewhere, go ahead and map it from this point. The distance will be fairly accurate. Parking is (free) on the street, and spaces are plenty. You'll never need to park more than a block away. Getting AroundLA Weekly thinks North Hollywood is the best neighborhood in Los Angeles! Read below: Could the best neighborhood in L.A. actually be in the Valley? I think so, and even though you might be a total anti-Valley snob, if you'll hear me out, you might change your mind. First, let's get this out of the way. North Hollywood's charms might at first seem hidden, or at least understated. But in its own endearing and refreshingly un-hip way, this neighborhood in the southeast corner of the San Fernando Valley has become one of L.A.'s best - especially for those seeking fast access to many other key 'hoods and relatively spacious housing at a bargain price. Tucked between the slicker Studio City, solidly middle-class Burbank, mansion-filled Toluca Lake and the pleasant, leafy grid of Valley Village, the core of North Hollywood has a vibe all its own - a little more gritty and densely urban. It's easy to get anywhere from here: Folks anywhere near the main drag, Lankershim, can walk pretty quickly to the Red Line stations at Universal or Chandler and zip into Hollywood or downtown in a matter of minutes. For cars, NoHo is also a wonderland of nearby freeways - (phone number hidden). A trip to Sunset & Vine literally takes just eight minutes. There's good access to at least four city parks. But it's not just a bedroom community. Basin dwellers may dismiss the "NoHo Arts District" as a bit underwhelming. But good things have happened in recent years, with a slow-forming critical mass of restaurants, bars and shops. On Magnolia alone, in the block between Lankershim and Vineland, you now find the Republic of Pie, the Bow & Truss tapas emporium, the Brickyard billiards tavern and a casual diner simply called EAT. Embedded in that stretch are also a few great old playhouses, with most regularly offering plays, comedy shows and acting classes. Due to open soon are an udon noodle shop and a brewpub with an ambitious menu. Head to lower Lankershim near Universal City and you'll find the acclaimed Firenze Osteria, owned by TV superchef Fabio Viviani, but head up that boulevard and there's the cozy nightspot Skinny's Lounge and the marvelously kitschy Tiki No bar, replete with exterior fire-spewing torches. Pass the tenacious (and pugnacious) little comedy club Ha Ha Cafe on the right and one of my favorite all-you-can-eat sushi places, Miyako, on the left, and a few blocks north you'll encounter the snazzed-up district above Magnolia anchored by the grand Academy of Television Arts & Sciences complex and the shaded-glass Arts College building. There you'll encounter a dense chunk of walkable, urban goodness. It's here that actor Robert Romanus (Damone from Fast Times at Ridgemont High) recently opened Bob's Espresso Bar. There's also a Pitfire Pizza, a sushi joint, the new District Bar, the grandiose El Portal Theater, the two-floor lounge/restaurant Federal Bar (in an old converted bank) and Laemmle's NoHo 7, which shows a satisfying combo of smarter mainstream films along with weirder indie and foreign choices. What Basin dwellers who dismiss the Valley may not realize is that historic businesses and offbeat, artsy offerings have long flourished in North Hollywood, making it a mecca for shoppers interested in browsing. Looking for hard-to-find videos? Try Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee on Vineland. Looking for books? There's Iliad Books, a sprawling, comfortably ramshackle bookstore on Cahuenga. Back in my earliest years in L.A., when I was a new stand-up comedian living in Silver Lake, some of the weirdest, most offbeat open mics were at now-defunct NoHo spots like the Kindness of Strangers Coffee House and Aaahhhcapella, both on Lankershim, and the crystal-and-tarot-card-vibed Indigo Cafe at Ventura and Vineland. That bohemian spirit is coming around again in new incarnations. There's even dynamite fast Indian food available at Assam Indian Kitchen way up Cahuenga, a hilariously casual and homey spot where two brothers crank out awesome Halal Indian amidst twinkling Christmas lights until 3 a.m. most nights. Authentic Latin American offerings abound as well; add a sprinkling of real, neighborhoody Middle Eastern, Armenian and Thai restaurants, and you've got a quiet, unassuming foodie paradise. North Hollywood has a refreshing mix of people - stolid, longtime Valley folks, along with recent immigrants and scores of more recent writer/actor/filmmaker/musician/artist types who'd look right at home in Hollywood or downtown. They've chosen NoHo because they like the semi-suburban lifestyle and easy parking at chill prices - but they want urban amenities, too. There's an offbeat, diamond-in-the-rough feel here, which I think is exemplified by the fact that my current auto mechanic, Karen at North Hollywood Discount Auto Repair, is a woman — and she owns the shop! As a dude, there's something cool about going to a female auto mechanic who calmly, confidently tells you about your car's struts, tie-rod end and intake manifold. I've never seen a woman auto mechanic before anywhere in L.A., and yet she exists, in NoHo. The neighborhood is the perfect mix of modern, bustling L.A. and unpretentious, working-class suburbia. Stop by some weekend and you'll see what I mean. Standing on Lankershim, you could imagine yourself somewhere else, in the middle of America, in a more innocent and wholesome place and time - yet you could still be back in downtown L.A. or at an acting audition in just 15 minutes. Where else in Los Angeles could you say that? Other Things to NoteThe apartment is above the garage so you may hear the door go up and down, but it's not loud. The TV gets the local channels. There is no cable.
