The SpaceThis little house is an old adobe with a screened portal, full kitchen (please be aware that the kitchen is small and more suitable for seating 4 people even though the house can sleep six) 2 bathrooms, small sitting room, 1 bedroom with a king, one bedroom with queen, 1 bedroom with XL twins. These first 2 bedrooms are only separated by a short hall way and do not have doors that close for privacy. In the style typical of an old adobe, the rooms are in a line like a train where you have to walk through one to access the other. Bedroom 3 with a queen size bed has it's own entrance, private bathroom and is directly off the entry portal. There are many ways to make use of the bedrooms available. For 2 couples they would use bedroom 1 and 3 for privacy and for family with children they would use bedroom 1 and 2. Of course, it will be up to you to choose the best arrangement for your group. This house is small enough that it is just right for 2 to 4 people. We are not toddler proof. A "portal" in NM is simply an outside space at the entryway to a house. In our case, it is screened and is used as a porch where one can relax reading, eating at the table or gazing out at the gardens. The house is surrounded by gardens on our five acre Organic Farm and is attached to 100 acre Peruvian Paso Horse Ranch bordering the Rio Grande. We have 500 fruit trees of many heirloom and antique varieties, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, chickens and turkeys. Our annual crops change every year and do not necessarily include a market variety of vegetables. For example, this year we are focused on growing heirloom corn for the retail seed market. I also enjoy growing flowers and culinary herbs which a plentiful during the season. Guest AccessGuests have access to gardens, orchards, and a 100 acres of private walking roads to the Rio Grande. Interaction with GuestsWe will be here to meet and greet. We live right here in the main house next door, work on the farm and in the gardens, and are around most of the time. My husband Ron is always open to giving farm tours and can talk at length about his "pedal tractor" or antique apples..etc. We respect your privacy. Although I do not offer services such as bed making and dish washing, I do occasionally enter the guest house to empty trash, compost and help out with laundry in stays lasting more than 5 days. The NeighborhoodWe are in the middle of Northern New Mexico and you can get anyplace from here, 45 minutes to Santa Fe, 45 minutes to Taos, 30 minutes to Ojo Caliente. Of course, you will have to drive but when you get home it will just be you in the peaceful and beautiful gardens.... Getting AroundMinimal public transportation. Other Things to NoteFor your breakfast we offer seasonal organic fruits, organic yogurt, milk and 1/2 n 1/2, farm fresh eggs, farm made preserves, granola, oatmeal, artisan bread, coffee, tea and all the fixings. The kitchen is full of staples and is also stocked with pancake mix, maple syrup, honey, sugar, nut butters, spices and herbs. I provide mostly organic and I can customize the breakfast selection for dietary needs if you let me know your preferences. In fact, I encourage you to participate with this so that you end up with the choices that you actually like. I have provided a few drawing supplies should anyone feel inspired. The library is there for your enjoyment but please don't take the books with you. This is quiet place and often may feel like no one is around at all. This house is very unique with it's small rooms and hand made feel of double adobe walls and hand hewn beams. The building used to belong to the Church next door that was built in 1911 and was used as an Inn of sorts. It was simply four rooms and a bathroom (no kitchen) but much work has been done since I first came here in 1994. I lived in this house for 15 years, doing all of tile work and decorative painting during that time. In 2014 Ron and I felt that it was time to move back to the old stage coach stop (the main house) next door. This place is everything that I love about NM, cozy, rustic, handmade and full of the whispers of times past. I feel blessed to be able live here and call it home. Airbnb gives me a way to share this gift with others that I may offer you and yours a unique experience away from home and one that is truly New Mexico at it's best. I trust in strangers to treat my home and things with kindness. This is an old house with many quirks. Strange little steps, old windows that refuse to operate properly, a front door handle latch that confounds the impatient. However, I believe that you will find an abundance of character. I do my best to provide a beautiful and cozy home.

The SpaceThe kitchen has all the utensils you might need to prepare your own meals. If you can’t find something you need, I’m happy to lend anything from my kitchen. Please wash the dishes and leave the kitchen as you found it. The tap water in the casita comes directly from my deep well. It is pure and fabulous. Guests will find a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator and may snip a sprig of mint just outside the door to enjoy with it. There are two friendly dogs and three cats on the property. They may come around to see you, but please, don’t let them into the casita. Some guests may be allergic. Please hang your wet towels on the hooks in the bathroom. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to explore the mesa directly behind my home. My dogs may gleefully accompany you on your walk, but please let me know if you do not want them to go along. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes for safe hiking. And be sure to carry enough water! Interaction with GuestsI am usually available, at least by phone or text, to answer questions or suggest activities for guests. The NeighborhoodLocated in Lyden, New Mexico, a traditional community along the Rio Grande, this beautifully restored adobe casita offers unique access to some of the hidden wonders of Northern New Mexico. Casita del Bosque is a quiet getaway halfway between the must-see attractions of Santa Fe and Taos and just a scenic drive away from the Georgia O’Keefe attractions at Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. The casita is part of a two-hundred-year old adobe house that shares a wall with a capilla, San Jose del Bosque, a small chapel built to serve the early Spanish settlers of the village of Lyden, formerly known as El Bosque (The Woods). Restored in 2007 to reflect its early New Mexico beginnings, the casita has ceilings of vigas and split cedar latillas and brick floors. The kitchen is fully equipped for those who wish to prepare meals. A continental breakfast basket will await you each morning of your stay. Casita del Bosque sits at the base of the massive Mesa Prieta, which harbors tens-of-thousands of petroglyphs dating from the very earliest inhabitants of this region. Adventurous visitors who hike up its rocky slopes gain a spectacular view of the valley below and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains beyond. They may even experience the thrill of encountering ancient petroglyphs along the way. For a more choreographed experience on the mesa, the Wells Petroglyph Preserve, less than a mile away, boasts the largest array of flute player petroglyphs ever recorded. The Preserve offers private as well as group tours that can be arranged in advance. Just a few miles to the south are the Pueblos of Ohkay Owingeh and Santa Clara, where practicing traditional Native American artists offer their sought-after artwork for sale. If the timing of your visit is right, you may have the privilege of experiencing a Pueblo feast day with traditional dances that are open to the public. In addition, both Pueblos operate thriving casinos for more modern entertainment options. A short drive away, the town of Española offers an appealing array of restaurants, many featuring traditional Northern New Mexican cuisine. While in town, stop by the visitors’ center and enjoy the gallery and gift shop operated by the Northern New Mexico Regional Arts Center at the Plaza de Española. A few minutes outside of Española is the beautiful Santa Cruz church where you can see many lovingly restored retablos and paintings that are precious to this vibrant church community. Fifteen minutes to the north of Lyden is Dixon, a tiny town known for arts and crafts, its thriving theatre scene, its wineries and its award-winning community library. Just beyond Dixon at the village of Pilar, is Orilla Verde National Recreation Area, the southernmost extension of one of our newest national monuments, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. The road through Orilla Verde winds along the Rio Grande providing birders and fishers a unique opportunity to enjoy their favorite pastimes. Alert visitors may spot Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep along the canyon walls. The famed High Road to Taos may be accessed through Española. Once you turn east, you will find yourself winding through beautiful New Mexico mountain villages including Chimayò, famed for its weavers and home to Rancho de Chimayò, a favorite restaurant with locals and visitors. As you travel the High Road, you will be awed by the beauty of Truchas, nestled in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains at 8,000 feet. Here you turn north, passing through several small villages. At Las Trampas take time to visit the San José de Gracia Church, a designated National Historic Landmark. As you leave Las Trampas, look carefully to the east to see an ancient aqueduct made of hollowed-out logs that still brings water from a mountain spring to irrigate the fields below. No matter which direction you explore from Casita del Bosque, you will find endless opportunities to indulge your fancies, whether they lean toward hiking, biking, skiing, birding, fishing, water sports, photography, visiting with artisans in their studios and galleries or enjoying a scrumptious meal. Your time at Casita del Bosque will provide a memorable experience, one that you won’t find in a city or a hotel. Reserve today! The Casita del Bosque Guidebook provides you with contact information, including web pages, for the sites mentioned as well as many others in Northern New Mexico.
