The SpaceAt just over 500 square feet, the house is very clean, tastefully furnished with a mixture of modern and vintage furniture and minimally decorated. The upstairs bedroom is spacious and has a comfortable double bed. The small bathroom contains a narrow shower. A private backyard with perennial gardens makes for great BBQs and relaxing reading. (The stairs that lead up to the bedroom are very steep so anyone with mobility issues should take that into consideration.) Guest AccessThe house comes with a fully equipped kitchen, including coffee maker, toaster, microwave, and ample pots and pans and spices. A charcoal BBQ is available for use in the backyard. Interaction with GuestsOwners will not be present, but are available by phone and have contacts on the island if needed. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood, perched on the hill above Carver's Pond, is populated mostly by year-round residents, many of whom work on the water in the summer. When you are at the house, you may hear the sounds of fishermen heading to the waterfront at dawn, children playing and lawns being mowed. This is a working island, and as such has a much more "real" feel to it than more touristy spots. One of two spring-fed granite swimming quarries on the island is a short walk or bike down the road. The quarries make for refreshing dips after a day of island exploration! Great food and coffee are available at a range of restaurants, cafes, and markets on Main Street, which is a 5-minute walk down the hill. Getting AroundIt is a 75-minute ferry ride to the island from Rockland. Please visit the Maine State Ferry Service web site for the schedule and information regarding line numbers/reservations for the ferry, which fills up quickly in the summer, and may require you having your car in line for a couple of hours. We suggest you bring a car to fully experience the island in all its glory. Bikes and kayaks (available for rent on the island if you need them) are also handy for exploring the hilly paved and dirt roads and pristine inlets and coastal sights. Other Things to NoteA binder full of maps, menus and other useful information about exploring the island is at the cottage. Numerous island nature preserves provide ample and amazing hiking opportunities. Kayaking among the seals in the Basin and buying freshly caught lobster just minutes away are highly recommended! A large grocery store, as well as a gourmet food store, provide most everything you will need during your stay. Cell service is almost non-existent on the island, though iPhones with Verizon service usually get some service at the cottage, and texts come through. A landline is also available, as is wifi. Here are a couple more reviews from guests who booked through another site in years' past: We found this to be a perfect base camp for my wife and I to use for exploring Vinalhaven. Close to town, tucked away in a quiet island neighborhood, immaculate, and simply but more-than-adequately furnished. A lot of thought and aesthetic sense have gone into making what may sound like a relatively small space very attractive and comfortable. The bedroom is downright spacious. The kitchen area was stocked with everything we needed to easily cook lobster, mussel and steak dinners for each night of our stay. Ditto breakfasts and lunches ... we ate out only once (Harbor Gawker, for a great haddock sandwich and cup of clam chowder.) for relaxing, the morning sun warms the front deck and then by noon is shining the back, very private seating area. We also took full advantage of the fat binder Stacey and Scott have thoughtfully stuffed with information they've collected about the island, including its myriad walking trails and points of interest. And though, as noted in the description, the cottage is in a neighborhood setting, we never found noise or anything else to be a problem. In fact, we loved the convenience of being just a short walk into town, and through a very peaceful village. Big congrats to Stacey and Scott for making the cottage so comfortable and hospitable ... we're certainly hoping we can schedule another visit to it soon. --Brad Elliot, VT My hubby and I honeymooned on Vinalhaven and stayed in this wonderful, peaceful little cottage. The owners are a sweet couple that take loving care of their cottage and property (garden was in full bloom!). It felt clean and fresh and sooo inviting! We spent most of every day walking around and exploring the island, but coming back to the cottage every afternoon or evening was always a treat. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to make several of our own meals out of locally grown organic produce and lobsters and crabs from the co-op. We rented bikes in Rockland at Bikesenjava, and ferried over with them. Get yourselves to Vinalhaven! We can't wait to return and stay again at the cottage! --Adrian Horovitz, CO

The SpaceIf you’ve ever fantasized about living in a restored barn, this is an opportunity to give it a try. The rental is an apartment in a barn that is attached to the small farmhouse with a shared ell. It is private, yet your hosts are just steps away. The house sits atop a hill overlooking a cove on Vinalhaven, an island 12 miles off shore from Rockland, Maine, accessed by the Maine State Ferry Service. The ferry ride to the island is approximately one hour and twenty minutes, and is a colorful introduction to the island, filled with visitors and locals returning from shopping on the mainland, kids, dogs and shopping carts in tow. The house is in a working neighborhood - fishermen, caretakers, carpenters, professionals, as well as some summer residents. There are cove and ocean views from the apartment’s upstairs bedroom, yet it is in a cozy neighborhood just a ten minute walk from Vinalhaven’s tiny waterfront downtown, which has a library, church, a medical center, art gallery, a few restaurants, a good market, a wine and cheese shop and a coffee shop. In the summer there is a weekly flea market and the local fisherman’s co-op has lobsters minutes from the sea. Visitors like to hike the many nature preserves and explore the stony beaches and working waterfront. Cell phone coverage is limited on the island, but there is wireless internet and phone at the house. A small sunny deck off the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area looks out over the lawn and garden. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a beautiful Danish woodstove for use if the nights are chilly. The upstairs bath has a soaking tub with handheld shower. Please note that after Labor Day the island is much quieter - restaurants may be closed or have more limited hours, etc. Our nightly price includes Maine sales tax. Guest AccessThe barn apartment has two entrances - thru the French doors that look out on the yard, or its own door in the ell. We have mountain bikes (male and female sizes) for you to use. Interaction with GuestsWe try to give our guests as much privacy as possible, but also to be available to answer questions and suggest places to hike etc. The NeighborhoodWe love the mix of people in our neighborhood - year-rounders, summer people, and everything in between. If you are looking for a very private, more isolated setting, it may not be the best choice for you. Most folks who stay find it really nice to be close to 'everything'. (It's a small place!) Getting AroundWe are about a fifteen-minute walk from the boat. If you need a ride let us know - if we can do it around our work schedule we're happy to. We can usually work something out. Downtown is within walking distance from the house. We have bikes for borrowing. If you want to really get out to the far reaches of the island you may want to bring your car - there are some beautiful hiking trails, and two quarries to swim in. If you are just coming for the weekend, it's more practical to leave it on the mainland. Here's the ferry drill - a lengthy description, but not as daunting as it seems! We've been renting for over a year now and for the most part people have made it on and off the island without incident. Here's the drill, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, and with a few insertions of our own: The island is served daily by ferry, operated by the Maine State Ferry Service. Two boats, making several trips each day between Vinalhaven and Rockland, carry passengers, cars, bicycles and cargo trucks. Each ferry carries about 16 cars, or the equivalent. Foot passengers and bicyclists will almost always find space available on any ferry run, but the procedure by which one gets a car on the ferry can be confusing. A brief description of the car system follows. Departures from Rockland: this is basically a first come, first served system. You put your car in line for the ferry, between the yellow lines marked on the pavement. Go in and get your ticket and place it on the dash. Be in your car a half hour before departure time. The crew will tell you what to do and where to go. You'll move up in the line as ferries depart until you are close enough to the head of the line to make it on the ferry. The exception to this arrangement is to purchase one of four car reservations available on three out of six trips each day. Reservations are sold beginning one month in advance of the day of departure through two hours prior to departure, based on availability. During the summer months, reservations are usually sold out by 7:00 a.m. of the day one month prior to departure. If you have a reservation, get in the left-most line facing the boat - left of the regular Vinalhaven line. Departures from Vinalhaven: to get a vehicle off of Vinalhaven by ferry requires a line number. To obtain a line number, one must call on the morning of the day before one wishes to travel. Phone calls are queued in the order received, starting at 5:30 AM sharp. Line numbers may also be obtained in person at the office on Vinalhaven, but not until 6 AM. The phone number to call for a line number, or for further clarification, is (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). The current schedule for departures may be obtained from the Maine State Ferry Service at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), or from their website: (URL HIDDEN) Other Things to NoteWe don't lock the house. Please note that occasionally one or more of the ferry trips can be cancelled due to a medical emergency or bad weather. If you absolutely have to be off the island on a certain day, plan accordingly and give yourself extra time. Also, please review how to get on and off the island carefully - the process for doing each differs a bit and requires attention and planning!

The SpaceThis space is unique in that it is cozy yet spacious, with a vaulted ceiling, loft sleeping/lounging space, open concept living, dining and kitchen, and two private bedrooms, with large deck with one portion covered and one exposed, for the sun lovers. There is a wood stove and central heat should you need it, but that is doubtful in the summer. Guest AccessOur property also includes a bunkhouse which is under construction and not accessible yet for guests; guests have access to the road that leads down from our house to the waterfront where you can climb on the rocks, put a kayak in, and enjoy a different perspective of Sheep Island and the cove. The beach to the right of our waterfront access is private and off limits. Interaction with GuestsWe are available directly via telephone and text messaging, but are not on Island during your stay. The NeighborhoodThe cottage is situated down a long, private dirt road, and there are other houses near by, some of them year round residences. It is private, but sound carries easily, so we ask that you be respectful especially when you are outside in the yard or on the deck as conversations and music travel easily on the wind. It is overall a very quiet neighborhood, peaceful, and often the only sounds you hear are the thrum of lobster boats in the cove from time to time, and the occasional lawn mower in the summer. As far as amenities on the island, there is a grocery store, a gas pump, a small medical center (NOT a full service hospital), no pharmacy, and there are emergency medical services. If you take regular medications or supplements it is advisable to bring all that you need with you, as there is no where to refill prescriptions on the island. Getting AroundYou will need a vehicle when you come to Vinalhaven, which is accessible via ferry from Rockland, ME, and via air through Penobscot Air, from the Portland Jetport. The ferry is a one hour, 15 minute ride from Rockland to Vinalhaven, and you must buy roundtrip ferry tickets in Rockland. More information on the ferry schedule and procedure is available at the Maine State Ferry Service website. We are a 20 minute walk from town, or a five minute drive from the ferry terminal. There is no taxi service, but locals can be hired for rides, etc. Check out the Vinalhaven (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) page, you can ask questions and make inquiries there about services on-Island. Other Things to NoteThere is no cable TV at the house, but we do have wifi access. We do have a TV with a built in DVD player, and a library of movies (kids and adults). We typically utilize this space as a retreat from technology and as a peaceful place of rest and rejuvenation, as the landscape around the house and area it is situated in lends itself to that nicely.

The island town is home to two nature preserves, both managed by the Nature Conservancy. Lane’s Island Preserve consists of rolling moors that run down to meet the sea on a 43-acre island joined to Vinalhaven by a stone causeway. Rough trails lead to beaches and bold shorelines, where the surf is spectacular on a stormy day. It offers many options for summer fun. The numerous hiking trails are well marked and varied. Two abandoned quarries serve as town fresh water swimming holes. Whether on a bike or in a car, there are numerous roads to explore. At the Rockland ferry terminal, park your car in the VH line for the ferry, between the yellow lines marked on the pavement, purchase your ticket and place it on the dash. Be in your car at least 30 minutes before departure time. The crew will instruct you. You'll move up in the line as ferries depart until you make it on to a ferry. To depart with your car from Vinalhaven requires a line number. To obtain a line number, you must call on the morning of the day before your travel day. Phone calls are queued in the order received, starting at 5:30 AM sharp. Line numbers may also be obtained in person at the office on Vinalhaven, beginning at 6 AM. This gorgeous, brand new, waterfront Post & Beam cottage is located on a tidal cove. This location is unique in that you have lots of privacy, it is across the cove from a nature preserve & down a quiet wooded lane. It is also unique in that it is only an 8 minute drive to town. Very few locations on Vinalhaven have this unique combination of advantages. You will enjoy beautiful sunrises, & sunsets reflect in the cove! Tidal coves are mud flats at low tide, which is great for birdwatching! At high tide the water is over your head & the mud warms up the water so it is possible to go swimming when the tide is right. If you have a kayak or canoe we have a natural stone area for launching your boat into the cove. The grounds have spectacular Daylily gardens! The cottage is build on the site of a former saw mill, & the flywheel from the old saw mill sits as a giant sculpture in the Daylily beds. Inside the house is an open living room/ dining/kitchen area, with large windows facing the water & the daylily gardens. At high tide you almost feel as if you are in a boat the camp is so close to the water (only 10 feet from the high tide mark!). Although the cottage is new it is built on the site of an earlier camp that was very close to the water, which 'grandfathered' the location, building a house this close to the water is no longer possible. The kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, cherry cabinets & a tile floor. The rest of the living area & the bedrooms have red birch floors. The bath has a granite vanity, a full tub/shower, & there are lobster and crab tiles embedded in the shower walls. Visit The Paper Store for newspapers, cards, books, fudge, photographs & gifts of local color. Island Spirits offers fine affordable wines and wine tastings, homemade breads, cheeses, & pates. Port o' Call has everything else you need from hats to mulch, BBQ's to birdfeeders, batteries to can-openers, all with a pot belly stove and warm smiles. The New Era Gallery has the finest in local paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, pottery, weaving, with openings every 3 weeks, seasonally. Annabelle's Ice Cream also serves paninis, Go Fish! has penny candy & toys for the kids, Second Hand Prose has used books, & there's a video store & a beauty parlor, too! Eat at Donna's Surfside for breakfast & lunch, The Harbor Gawker, The Haven, Tibb's and 64!. There is a large grocery & liquor store, a post office, a library, & don't forget the Fisherman's Friend & Everything Country! Visit the ARC (the Arts & Recreation Center) for gallery shows, openings, yoga classes, etc. Saturday mornings there's a flea market which is a local summer highlight and a great place to socialize. Enjoy fresh squeezed lemonade, homemade pies, jams, fresh berries, produce & flowers. Knitted hats, jewelry, wood crafts, rugs, pottery, arts and crafts, watercolors, photography, netted handbags, t-shirts, an assortment of this and that, & just plain good old used stuff! Kayaking tours are also available on the island, as well as swimming and sailing classes for the kids. There is a golf course on nearby North Haven Island.
