The SpaceAn original 1950's beach holiday home. Known to Kiwis in the North Island of New Zealand as a bach. Owned by our family for over 30 years. This is our favorite place in the world and we have traveled to a lot of places!!! No where is as amazing as Little Bay. Spectacular views off the deck over the ocean to the end of Great Barrier Island and the Cuvier Island. An original bach that is indestructible, its not flashy and fancy, its comfortable and practical. With everything you need to relax. Sleeping 8 in the 3 bedrooms there is a great big bunk room at one end. So there is one king bed, a double and 4 singles as bunks. Its a 3 hour drive from Auckland, about 15 minutes on the gravel road past Colville. Colville is the last place for food, drinks and petrol- don't go past on an empty tank! There is no TV, limited cell phone coverage, no shops and no where to go but the beach or a great bush walk in the surrounding hills. Little bay is the most gorgeous white sand beach fringed with huge Pohutakawa trees. There are great walks up to the top of the Moehau range of mountains. For entertainment- people and food etc there is a Kiwi sanctuary about 25 minutes drive away in Sandy bay at Tangiaro lodge, there is a great restaurant, snooker table and air hockey and bush spa pools. Its about 20 dollars for an hour in a huge spa. The Bach is basic, with 2 nice fridges and freezer, microwave and an outside toilet!!!! Lots of board games, tonnes of books and lots of rest and relaxation. It has a bath and a great shower. It is a basic original Kiwi bach. It is not like a hotel. There is a BBQ and Kayaks if you have a vehicle that can take them down the beach. The beach is a 5 minute walk or 1 minute drive away. steps are over the road by the fire hydrant then right over the chain behind the garage. Please respect this private walkway. pick up rubbish. We are at the top of the small cluster of houses so there is no one blocking our view or looking at us. It is very private!. There is parking for 3 or 4 cars or a boat. The beach has a boat launch area but it is for tractors only due to the deep sand. Close by there are concrete boat ramps for 4 wheel drives. If you want to experience what a very special limited number of NZ families do -then rent a bach. It is a great way to take a real holiday. Guest AccessBooks, a shower and bath and mother nature- oh and panoramic views of the Great Barrier and Cuvier Islands. The bach has everything a normal house would have but no tv and no doors, just curtains. It is a 3 bedroom house with open plan dining and lounge area. Toilet is flushing but outside. Interaction with GuestsWe live 6 hours away, so you are required to leave the bach as you find it. Cleaned fully for the next person, no washing out or left dirty, nothing outside, power and water turned off and all windows and doors securely locked. The NeighborhoodThat there are only 6 people living permanently in this bay. At times of the year there is no one around. There are great walks and lots of outdoor experiences. Getting AroundNothing, no public transport at all past Coromandel township. You will need a car. A good car and be a fairly good driver, the roads are narrow, gravel and winding. You can bus and ferry into Coromandel, the bach is 45 minutes drive further on. Other Things to NoteThere are no doors in the bach, only curtain dividers. The toilet is outside. You must leave it as you find it. No dogs- there are kiwi right outside the bach in the native bush, at night you can hear them call at times of the year when its quiet....

Modern architecturally designed holiday home (1dbed/open plan) plus 2 guest caravans overlooking the sea at Tuateawa, north-east of Coromandel town (located 3 hours drive from Auckland International Airport). A great place to unwind surrounded by nature, and very private. You get the house, caravans and grounds to yourself (our property manager lives nearby). It is an ideal base for self drive visitors to explore the Coromandel Peninsula. It suits guests who are happy to self cater as there are no restaurants nearby, but we can recommend local suppliers of fresh seafood in Coromandel town.
The house is located beside a large Pohutakawa tree with intimate sea views below and beyond to Mercury Island and the surrounding native forest. Excellent views from the 'jetty' deck when dolphins or Orcas visit the bay. Also great for viewing Tuateawa's surf break when it's working.

The two 1970s Chevron caravans are located across the lawn from the deck of the house. One has its own deck and one has an awning, both have sea views. There is a separate shower and toilet externally accessed to serve the 2 caravans.

A natures lover's retreat with tui, kereru, kaka, pheasants and quail visiting. Leave an outside light on at night and puriri moths attract morepork owls right on to the deck.

Tuateawa has a stony beach which is good for kayaking, fishing, and snorkelling. Great for rock pool exploring. Look for Eagle rays at low tide in the shallows.

Ten minutes drive north are the classic sandy swimming beaches of Little Bay and Waikawau.
Little Bay is a sheltered bay, a great safe beach for children, with a lagoon and Pohutukawa trees for shade. Waikawau beach is a beautiful long stretch of golden sand, with good waves, popular with board riders and surf casters. Our holiday house has featured in 2 books '100 Dream Homes from Down Under' and 'Big House Little House'. Our holiday house is ideal for a couple, and the 2 retro caravans are for any extra guests. We provide full linen and towels for guests in the house. We ask caravan guests to bring their own linen and towels (pillows, blankets, duvets provided). Thanks Our holiday home is located on the more remote northern tip of the peninsula. It suits self-drive and self-catering visitors, as there are no restaurants, cafes or bars nearby. This is a private hideaway surrounded by nature. The beautiful beaches of Little Bay and Waikawau are a 15 minute drive away. Many of the roads in our area are unsealed, so part of the adventure is driving shingle roads.

The SpaceWaiaro won 2015 "Best Eco" in local award for holiday rental "bach" in NZ. The bush in the area is in great condition and is bordered by the Coromandel Forest Park, and you can walk from the door right to the summit of Moehau if you are intrepid. But the best wildlife and forest is near the streams within Waiaro Sanctuary itself and you can see a lot by lying in the hammock by the stream and letting it come to you, or sitting on the deck with a cold glass. You have 200 acres of bush to wander around without crossing a boundary, and when you do you won't see a fence anyway. Guest AccessThe whole house is four your use and there is 200 acres of grounds. No fences. Interaction with GuestsI am very happy to discuss Waiaro and surrounds with you. Since you will be having the house I will not be onsite when you are. My neighbour keeps an eye on the place for me and he can give advice onsite if you need. He can also take you for a guided walk through the sanctuary for a small "koha". The NeighborhoodUpper Coromandel Peninsula is spectacular. The drive up the coast from Thames to Waiaro is the best in NZ (I reckon) and once you get there you will find yourself able to enjoy real NZ. Getting AroundYou will need to drive yourself there as this is off the beaten track. The last 20 minutes are on dirt roads and a low-slung sport car might get a scrape on the track to the house. There is a ferry between Coromandel and Auckland but you need a car on the Coromandel side and no car hire in town sadly. Other Things to NoteThe house is completely off-grid i.e. no phone, mobile, data, or mains electricity. Waiaro runs on solar power and hot water with gas stove and fridge/freezer. The fire also heats the water and there is a generator should the batteries run dry. This does mean you may need to think more about your power use etc. than in a normal homes. If this sort of thing doesn't suit you then you may find other "on-grid" places more suitable. I will send you a "user guide" to let you know more about the house and area. You need to clean the house before you go. If you want to just pack and leave we can arrange cleaning for an extra $60. If you are coming from abroad and want us to provide sheets, pillowcases, towels we can do this but you need to let us know.

Feel free to use the caravans as extra space while staying in the house. Explore the grounds and help yourself to herbs or anything ripe in the garden. The nearest shops/restaurant are back over the hill in Coromandel town. It's 19kms but allow 35-45 minutes to drive. ) TUATEAWA is a settlement of mainly holiday homes on the East coast of the peninsula. It has great sea views, rugged cliffs and is set in an area of native forest. The stony beach below our house is great for kayaking, snorkelling and ok for swimming at high tide. There are rock pools to explore plus look for Eagle rays in the shallows. There is a great left hand surf break below our house that appears a few days after storms at sea, and attracts all the local board riders. Dolphins and orcas visit the bay also. Drive 10-15 minutes north to the classic sandy beaches of Little Bay and Waikawau. Little Bay is a sheltered cove, a safe beach for children with a lagoon and Pohutukawa trees for shade. Waikawau is a long stretch of golden sand, with good waves, popular with board riders and surfcasters. Getting AroundOur house is suitable for travellers who are happy to self drive. The last 19kms to our place is unsealed and we tell guests to allow 35 to 45 minutes as its narrow and winding. It's all part of the adventure and a standard car is fine. Other Things to NoteWe do provide full linen and towels for guests using the bedroom in the house. Any additional guests using the caravans do have to bring there own linen and towels. There are blankets, duvets and pillows provided. The nearest shops/restaurant are back over the hill in Coromandel town. It's 19kms but allow 35-45 minutes to drive. There is a great general store with petrol at Colville but that is also a 30 min drive away. Our place does suit those who are happy to self cater. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker(gas top+electric oven),microwave , Brevile electric grill, toaster, kettle etc plus there is a BBQ. We do provide oils, vinegar, herbs and spices plus instant coffee and teas. There will be a blue folder left on the coffee table that has useful information for running the house plus local activities, walks, beaches and day trips.

All amenities can be found in Coromandel, we recommend buying some freshly smoked fish, enjoying a organic cafe either in town, or at the Driving creek railway on you’re way. The area is surrounded by natural walking tracks through subtropical forest with spectacular over the pacific toward Great Barrier Island. Next to Little Bay is the 3 km white sand surf beach of Waikawau Bay. You can also access Little Bay via the Kennedy bay road, this is windy and narrow and has had storm and rain water damage lately, so take care. Guest AccessLimited access to Laundry room. Interaction with GuestsWe live on the next door property and can help if you need anything. The NeighborhoodSecluded. Quiet and peaceful. Kiwis often call at night. The SpaceThis 22 acre bush block is a privately owned retreat. It contains a 2 bedroom cabin and a caravan as an extra bedroom. Water is rain supplied into water tanks, so must be used sparingly. To this end, the property has a unique long drop toilet down a beautiful path with awesome views over Waiaro. There is a 2nd clearing for ease of turning vehicles around to come up to the cabin, and there is a track carved into the hill to enable guests to reach the top of the hill for magnificent views over Otautu Bay and the Hauraki Gulf. If you'e lucky, you'll get to hear kiwi calling at dusk or early morning - they are resident on the property. Guest AccessAccess on the property is within the fenceline - its a 22 acre block, so heaps of room to wander the recovering native. The entrance into the property is a sharp left hand turn (Coming from Coromandel) to a locked gate. You then wind yourself up the hill and take the right hand turn to the house section, or if a bit sharp, you can head left, turn around on the 2nd cleared site and make your way up to the house. There is room on the section for a couple vehicles, any more-leave on the 2nd site. We request (to avoid damage to the track) that no heavy vehicles, or trailers or boats are towed up the track - cars are okay but take your time (its a little windy and steep). Interaction with GuestsWe live 2.25 hours away from the property, though we also have a beachhouse on the waterfront at Otautu Bay (5 mins from cabin). If we're at home, we can be reached on (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or email (EMAIL HIDDEN) If we're at the beachhouse (1 Otautu Wharf Road), mobile range is very bad (though you have good access at the cabin). We request that if you are unable to reach us by phone, send an email or use (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Messenger (Wilma n Jock Robinson), as we have good internet access, or call at the house for personal contact. The NeighborhoodAside from the relatively untouched views of the hills and the Hauraki Gulf, the property provides easy access for tourists wanting to travel up both side of the Coromandel Peninsula (do one side each day?). The roads are loose gravel for the most part, so take care on the roads and utilise those pull over bays on the side when you can so traffic can get past that know the road well. Colville offers two cafes where you can grab a bite to eat or a coffee. The Colville store has pretty much EVERYTHING, as its the last place you can buy anything heading north on the Coromandel. The Himalaya Shop offers some awesome shopping - beautiful jewellery, clothing, all sorts! The White Star Station offers horse trekking - you need to book in for this one - they offer all sorts of activities for the tourists. Getting AroundYou've obviously got your own vehicle or a hire vehicle - make sure you fill up at Colville Store - it's the last place for fuel heading North. No public transport is available and take care on the roads as there are many tourists in campervans on the roads during the holiday period. Other Things to NoteWater supply is restricted - so no washing machine is provided. There is a laundromat in Coromandel, or bring enough with you to cover your stay. If it's cold, you may want to bring blankets or sleeping bags as well as your bed linen - pillows and bedspreads are provided in the cabin. Bring your own towels, facecloths and tea towels please. The 2nd Bedroom has a bunk set (single over double & a single bed - this option was not available in the bedding advice section sorry). The caravan beds are the typical narrow squabs (2 x singles and 1 x double). Master bedroom has bedside tables and a chest of drawers. 2nd bedroom and caravan both have shelved wardrobes.
