The SpaceLocated only 5 minutes from Maldon township in a beautiful rural setting, “Bendigo” Bowes Cottage is the original house built by the Bowe family in 1850. The Bowe family were originally from Cumberland in England and made their living as stone masons, they came out to the gold fields and made a handsome living not digging for gold but building solid stone houses, churches and cottages for those who could afford it. All the stone for “ Bendigo” was quarried on the property as well as for the other two houses on the adjoining properties which we believe were built for the expanding family members use. The outbuildings which still exist behind ‘Bendigo‘ became a gold assay office and stables. These outbuilding are being refurbished as living areas. Guest AccessNational Trust classification B – a gem of a cottage preserving the best elements of goldfields colonial era architecture and adding 21st century comfort and convenience such as well appointed country kitchen, beautiful bathrooms, 3 double bedrooms with period furnishings, warm character filled living and dining rooms and stylish outside entertaining areas - all leading into a large 3 acre private cottage and orchard garden and native bushlands with Land for Wildlife classification. Adjoining the Nuggetty State Forest the bush garden attracts many bird species, kangaroos and wallaroos, echidnas and the occasional koala. The NeighborhoodIn Maldon and the central Victorian towns of Castlemaine and Bendigo it is easy to enjoy the history of the goldfields areas or get to know and be involved in community life. There are many seasonal activities and regular market and craft markets such as Wesley Hill market every Saturday, Castlemaine farmers market first Sunday and Maldon Market second Sunday each month or join in the vibrant cultural life of the fabulous Castlemaine Arts festival ( check it out online !) the Maldon antique fair, Easter community festival, the original and great Folk Festival in November and many more regional celebrations. In this heart of Victoria there are also quite a number of established dry land wineries and cideries to sample but aside from public events there are also the quiet pleasures found in bush walking or bicycle riding with friends and family along the goldfields trails, fishing, painting, bird watching or just smelling the roses in a sunny corner of an old courtyard garden. Getting AroundBy car take the Calder Highway to Castlemaine then Pyrenees Highway towards Maryborough taking the turnoff to Maldon approximately 1 km outside Castlemaine, in Maldon take the main road through the shopping area out along Reef Street. The SpaceNestled on the Muckleford Creek, this lovely bit of Central Victoria has a certain zing to it. Maybe it's because of the location between out two local mountains (small ones, but hey, there's a network of rivers and streams as a result!) Some would say that all that water brings a positive energy to the area. I think so, along with the clean air, lovely local villages, and beaut country people. Guest AccessWhether you're in the area for business, travel, to see friends or to check out the wildlife, our home is cosy, comfortable and open plan. You are welcome to relax in the lounge, settle yourself at the dining table, knuckle down in the study, feel at home in the kitchen, relax on the verandah or head out to explore the 11 acres of bush, surrounds and beyond. And incase you miss the details below - towels, linen and brekky are included. Note, we share the bathroom! And fast phone access? Forget it! Though you'll find some reception, so you can connect with the outside world if you want :) Interaction with GuestsYou may need some space, or want to chat heartily! Happy to do both, depending on when we're about. We'll make you a robust breakfast (home-made muesli, home-baked bread and fresh eggs from the girls!) Locally roasted coffee and loose leaf tea. You can bring or prepare your other meals or contribute to a shared bite. The NeighborhoodWalmer is a farming district of Mount Alexander Shire, and is really handy in its location to easily get to surrounding towns and districts, such as Castlemaine, Maldon, Bendigo, Maryborough. In either direction along the dirt road the local farms and hobbyists are home to cattle, sheep, horses, donkeys, emus, chickens; even peacocks! The latter tend to spend much of their time around here ... somewhat noisily but with that comes such beauty! Getting AroundYou will need a car to get about. There's a train to and from Melbourne to Castlemaine but no convenient way to get here from the station, sorry. But feel free to roll around the local roads on borrowed mountain bikes - there are 2.
