The SpaceThe Farm Escape the hustle and retreat to Stony Creek Farmstead’s pastoral hillsides. Our small farmstead is nestled deep in the Catskills surrounded by winding country roads that take you past grazing cattle, rolling fields and century-old barns. Just about two and half hours Northwest of the Five Boroughs you could be here in time to tuck the kiddies in bed and pour yourself a glass of wine. Our Story We began farming almost 10 years ago. A young couple with a toddler and no roof over our heads, but tons of muscle and ideas. Luckily we had the support of Dan’s parents, Karen and Peter, who own the farm, and Kate’s parents, who bought a house in the next town. Not to mention a great number of fellow farmers and neighbors who have rescued us from all manner of incidents. The farm is home to a herd of beef cows, a flock of sheep, heritage breed pigs, and innumerable chickens. Our guard dogs Rose, Anakin, and Sasha beg for love during the day and roam the hills all night protecting the livestock with gentle and deep resounding woofs. A small acre of organic vegetables feeds our families and guests all summer long, then provides potatoes and other fodder for our root cellar in the fall. Guest AccessYour Tent Rustic yet luxurious, our platform tents have welcomed families, lovebirds, reunions, and wedding guests alike. Canopied ceilings and canvas walls, with a wooden floor underfoot, keep you dry and cozy without shutting nature out. A fully equipped kitchen boasts a wood cook stove and essential utensils for cooking our fresh farm fare. Don’t worry, if you tire of stirring and sautéing - just let us know and we can prepare one of our specialty items for your next meal. Whether you’ve come to pluck your meal from the garden or just sit back and watch the cows graze, there is space enough in your tent for you to lounge in a canvas swayback chair or to stand and prep veggies for the afternoon meal. Each tent includes a cabinet bed for concealed midday naps, as well as a set of bunk beds and a separate room with King size berth. A small water closet conceals a flush toilet. A short stroll across a foot bridge brings you to the industrial open air shower house, with four stalls, two family size and two singles. You won’t find anywhere to plug your phone in - okay, there is electric in the farm store - the tents are intentionally off-grid to help you appreciate the finer things in life. Hike the hills for a breathtaking view of the valley, jump in the crystal clear pond, follow the creek into the woods. DIY books, homesteading magazines, board games and a basic art supplies can be found in the farm store for rainy afternoons or post-hike relaxing. Interaction with GuestsA Day on the Farm Wake up to the trickling creek and breathe in fresh mountain air. Meet the farmers in the barn for the morning milking. Collect eggs for breakfast. Pick up a warm loaf of bread, some local cheese and preserves from the farm store. Then retreat to your tent to tend the fire in the cookstove and let the morning unfold. Saturdays at 11am, we offer a guided farm tour for neighbors and guests. Saturday evenings we fire up the outdoor brick oven and have a pizza party and campfire. Mostly folks enjoy just being here. Relax in the shade of a tree, enjoy a glass of wine, and soak up the simple life. The NeighborhoodThe Locale Delaware County is chock-full of agriculture - dairy, veggie, beef and poultry farms, as well as brewers of absinthe and local mead makers. Take a hike to forage wild edibles, go berry picking, paddle a kayak down the Delaware or hunt for that special antique in stores that line the main streets. Come and enjoy our "OFF THE GRID" Catskill Mountain retreat. Private, extremely quiet, 36 acre farm with 1800's farmhouse, chicken coup (with self fed and watered chickens, and huge post and beam barn. The property has a mountain spring (WATER CAN BE DRINKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE SPRING), spring fed, swimming pond (with small row boat) and a large year round stream with concrete bridge over to barn. Guests also have access to the Walton Town Pool. We also have a volleyball and bad-mitten set up for your enjoyment. If Art is your thing, then sit on the bridge overlooking our year round running stream and paint the barn or landscape (or just sit and listen to the sound of the water running down the stream/brook). One can fish either in our private stocked pond, trout filled stream, neighboring Cannonsville reservoir (LARGE ROW BOAT PROVIDED AT RESERVOIR FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE), or on the world famous Delaware River (OUR POND BOAT IS ALSO FOR USE AT THE RIVER). The property also has separate campsites, one at the top of our mountain boasting a panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains, spectacular sunsets, and valley below. Camp outs work great at these spots or just let the kids have some fun camping outside or running around. Guests tell us their stay at the farm was one of FIRST TIMES IN A LONG TIME THE KIDS RAN, PLAYED AND EXPLORED RATHER THAN SIT ON THE COMPUTER. Best of all, our farm borders (with right of way from our property) New York City's huge Cannonsville Reservoir offering thousands of additional acres for recreation. IN ADDITION, THE FAMOUS MAINTAINED FINGER LAKES TRAIL SYSTEM COMES RIGHT DOWN TO THE FARM. The entire farm will be for your personal use as no one else is on the property. The reservoir itself is walking distance from the house. This reservoir offers excellent fishing, either from the shore or from our own boat. The Cannonsville Reservoir is also open to sailing, canoeing, and Kayaking. At night, sit by our huge fire ring, look up at the stars and Milky Way, and you’ll think you’re in a planetarium. Roasting marshmallows, making SMORES, or just cooking on a real wood fire in our huge charcoal grill are favorite past-times for our guests. We also have a gas grill (or smoker grill) if one prefers. On Spring nights, our pond comes alive with the serene sound of peepers which will lull you to sleep. During the day, kids love to catch frogs in our pond (there are thousands!) Or just sit by (or on the bridge above) our year round running brook and listen to the water flow down to the reservoir. The farm is truly a beautiful place to stay. Bird watching and wildlife photography is also a favorite past- time at the Farm with Bald Eagles (we have one guest who returns every year to watch the Bald Eagles fish along the stream behind the house), Blue Herons, Wild Turkey, deer, and other wildlife regularly seen. Inside the home, make yourself comfortable with a game room (pool and ping pong table), stocked modern kitchen, wood stove, screened in porch, four bedrooms (large master bedroom on the main floor), open living room with exposed wooden hand-hewn beams, as well as knotty pine throughout. Cozy up to the wood fire and read a book (many games, books, magazines etc. provided for your use) or sip some hot chocolate as you watch the snow falling gently on the fields. Although the farm is isolated, there is free wireless internet (no code required), free coast to coast long distance telephone, as well as 2 satellite televisions (including a 55 inch HDTV in master bedroom). The house also comes with a water cooler (hot and cold) as well as a Keurig Coffee Maker (pods sold at our local supermarket). This 1917 farmhouse has been painstakingly restored as a vacation rental house and affords all the conveniences of home. Chamberlain Brook runs through the property and flows into a small waterfall near the edge of the property. The Solitude Inn is situated on a dead end road, and boasts 200 acres of cleared land, woods, stands of Fraser Fir Christmas trees, and old roads for hiking. It is surrounded on three sides by New York City Department of Environmental Protection land, which is accessible for fishing and hiking. A section of the Finger Lakes Trail is accessible at the end of Chamberlain Brook Road. In addition, NYS Route 10 is a designated bike path. Located 1.5 miles from the pristine and beautiful Cannonsville Reservoir, which affords visitors the grace and comfort of light, just as The Solitude Inn affords visitors the grace and comfort of home. A car or bike or motorcycle ride around the reservoir is good for the spirit. Sometimes, in early morning, the sun breaks through a hole of cloud and throws a silver circle on the reservoir. On the side hill, an intersect of birches is a white web against brown. An eagle may be perched there, eying iridescent fish at shallow water’s edge. Red tailed hawks career across water, wings hitched up, the tell-tale of hawks. A crow perches like a Christmas star on the leader of a fir tip so seemingly tender as to remind one of the hollow bones of birds. Holsteins graze in the flat along the river pushing pink noses into the last growth of grass in corn stubble. The sun blows the clouds out and illuminates the golden beaks of hawks and hollow bones of birds and heavy hooves of cow, a symphony of sight. In late spring, a pumpkin patch begins to set fruit behind The Solitude Inn, in a plot full of winter squash, pumpkins, and gourds. Stay at harvest time, and pick your own. Take a boat out on the reservoir to fish during the season. Or paddle around in a canoe or rowboat during recreational boating season, Memorial Day to Columbus Day each year. Sit on the wraparound porch where doing nothing is always doing something. Bed linens and towels are provided, and the kitchen is fully equipped. The water supply to the farmhouse is crystal-clear spring water, so there is no need to bring or purchase bottled water. Reservations are taken for weekend, weekly, monthly, and long-term rentals. The entire house and property are for your use for the duration of your stay. In addition to secluded getaways, The Solitude Inn is perfect for out-of-town family and friends who are in the area to attend parties, showers, weddings, family reunions, and memorial services. There is no smoking in the house. Pets will be considered. Please ask.
