The SpaceOur guest room is a large space, the size of two bedrooms. We recently added this downstairs studio with sunken courtyard and upstairs guest bathroom when we renovated our 1950's house a couple of years ago. Formerly my music studio it has an industrial/retro feel featuring exposed double brick walls, a sealed concrete floor, and pressed metal ceiling which also carries a heating duct. It has a separate entrance so you can come and go as you please without disturbing us and maintain your privacy. It opens out into our back garden, and has a sunken courtyard where you can chill in the hammock, relax with an evening drink or play a game of hopscotch. We've set it up to comfortably accommodate a family of four. There is a queen bed and single bunk beds. If you require more bedding we have a fold up single bed we can put between the bunks and the queen bed. The studio also has a small lounge area complete with TV/DVD, internet radio with Bluetooth adapter, comfy armchairs, games, and a bar fridge with tea and coffee making facilities. Please note - the guest bathroom and toilet are located upstairs above the studio. To access them you need to go out side, up a few stairs, and in through our laundry door. It's very easy, but we want you to be aware the bathroom is not an ensuite. For your privacy there are sliding doors which separate this area from the main house. Guest AccessYou will have your own keys and a separate entrance so you're free to come and go as you like. You'll have your own bathroom and toilet, and are welcome to make use of our backyard, alfresco deck, kitchen, and dining area. Breakfast - cereal, toast, tea/coffee & eggs (if the hens are laying) will be made available for you on the breakfast bench in the kitchen, you can help yourself at your convenience. Gluten free cereal & bread, soy/rice milk, herbal tea and decaf coffee are available on request. You have access to our well equipped kitchen, and can use oils, spices etc. to add to your meals. We do cook pretty much every night, so if you are planning to use the kitchen please let us know in advance so we can work around you. You can also use our laundry if you need to do some washing. Interaction with GuestsWe're happy to talk as little or as much as you like, depending on what else is going on... we do have regular day to day things to attend to but we're pretty relaxed and spend a fair bit of time at home in the evenings. My work gets me out & about across the south west interviewing interesting local people and finding out what's happening in the region, and we're happy to share our knowledge and tell you about the hidden gems of the SW and unique travel experiences. We have a great interest in art, cultural events, music, theater, taking country drives & walks... generally getting out & about so we are usually across most festivals and events, there is always something going on! The NeighborhoodWarrnambool is reasonably spread out for a small city. We are about 2kms from the CBD, so it takes about 15-20 minutes to walk into town. There are several supermarkets in the CBD, and another two nearby in East Warrnambool. There's a milk bar around the corner for basic essentials. Our street is big and wide on a hill overlooking north Warrnambool, so it's pretty quiet, and we have great neighbours. It's only a short walk from our place to the old Fletcher Jones factory which is now an eclectic market selling mostly second hand goods. There are plenty of pubs and music venues, cafes and restaurants, shops and services in town, as well as some interesting art galleries, weekend markets, a maritime museum, theatre and cinema - all walking distance.
There's a big park at the end of our street with walking and bike trails, a football oval and various play equipment. The local indoor/outdoor pool is a 15 minute walk away. The main beach (Lady Bay) isn't far away either with Lake Pertobe across the road. This is an enormous playground for kids with everything from climbing equipment, a maze, flying foxes, boat rides and bbqs, it's a great community space & often hosts events.
Warrnambool is a great base for taking day trips and exploring South West Victoria - it's a 15 minute drive to the wonderful volcanic nature reserve and significant Aboriginal site of Tower Hill which is home to kangaroos, koalas and emus. It's 20 minutes to the historic Irish settlement of Koroit, a 25 minute drive to Port Fairy, and about one hour and 15 minutes to Hamilton and Portland. It also takes about that long to get to Dunkeld which is at the base of the Grampians. If you want to explore the shipwreck coast don't miss the picturesque inland towns like Timboon and coastal towns like Port Campbell both 50 minutes away en route to the Great Ocean Road. Getting AroundPublic transport in Warrnambool isn't fantastic - there's a bus service but to be honest we've never used it. You can check out the routes and timetables online at Transit South West (transitsw) (website hidden). You can walk / cycle quite easily, or if you've got a car you'll have no trouble getting around. Our house is in walking distance to most Warrnambool tourist attractions, shops and services. Or you could always opt for a taxi, but it's wise to book ahead as there are limited taxi's and waiting times can be long - phone 13CABS. Other Things to NoteCheck in and check out times are flexible but generally we'd prefer check in no earlier than 2pm, and check out no later than 11am. Once again, please note the toilet and bathroom are upstairs in the main house, so you need to go outside and come through our laundry door to access them. It's just a few steps though - nothing difficult - but we want to make clear it is not an ensuite. We have two cats who take a while to warm to new people so they'll probably leave you alone! We keep them inside at night so please be mindful if you're coming in and out of the main house after dark. Our chickens have a fenced off corner of the backyard to themselves and shouldn't bother you at all! We are happy to take children into the hen house for cuddles, to feed hens or collect eggs but ask you don't go in without us.
