The Space***To book after Dec 30th of this year, please select the Crooked River Tiny House in Waterford under Keith's name as he is the new owner/manager! Thank you-- *May 1--Oct 31 rate: $100 per night. **Nov 1--April 30 rate: $90 per night. Dogs are welcome. No cats, please. This 200 sq ft tiny house has a finished, fully-insulated interior with pickled pine v-match walls and various finds from resale stores and internet sites. For those who are not afraid to "rough it" without electricity and fend for themselves, desire respite, exploration, and an eco-friendly simplistic retreat, this is definitely your kind of place. A stay at the tiny house is somewhere between pitching a tent and glamping, but with lots of personal character and space maximization. There is--without a doubt--no other place like it. The woodstove is user-friendly, and it usually takes under 30 minutes for the house to be comfortable. Summers are generally breezy, hot, and the windows have screens to keep the bugs out. Great winter sledding and rock hunts in the gravel pits down the road, and exceptional summer river floating when the water is running high--a 20 minute walk will bring you to a stretch of the river that will have you spending just over an hour drifting on back to the house. The river itself is great for fly fishing and exploration, and is full of small swimming holes to skinny dip or bathe, pending guests' seasonal timing and their ability to withstand the sheer clean and cold refreshment that is the Crooked River. A hand pump operated outdoor shower is available. With the closest neighbor about a half mile (as the crow flies), it is easy to rest quietly or see the night sky. While the house can accommodate 4 (a full-sized pullout couch downstairs and queen-sized bed upstairs), the house is perfectly cozy for 2 to share. If 4 people were looking for a place to crash after skiing all day in Bethel (for instance), this would work out nicely. In the late spring, summer, and early fall, there is an unheated, insulated guest house (8 x 10) with a full-sized futon/bed accommodation. Kitchen has a cooler box, sink basin, propane cooktop, and is stocked with pots, pans, self serve dry-goods (including teas, cocoa, & coffees), and spices. Dog-friendly with lots of space to romp freely. Fire pit outside. All guests booking a stay are required to bring their own drinking water (there is no pumped water to the house) and sleeping bags or sheets and pillow cases, and also to leave the place equally as clean or cleaner and welcoming for subsequent guests. Please do not request a reservation if you are looking for a "full service" BnB experience! Guest AccessFor folks traveling north or south via I-95, the house is approximately 40 minutes from the Gray, Maine exit. It's also 15 minutes from Norway, and 20 minutes from both Bethel and Bridgton--all offering most major services. Norway and Bridgton both have cute-sy food coops with a major grocer (Hannaford). The edge of the White Mountain National Forest is just five miles down the road. When the snow is gone, there is a hidden key to raise a private entrance gate accessing the gravel road for car travel; past the driveway, the road dead-ends at a series of small gravel pits. In snow and ice, there is parking near the bottom of the road, meaning it's a 20-minute walk, ski, or snowshoe to get to the house; the parking spaces are plowed, but the road is not. Guests are welcome to explore the river and the 450 acres surrounding the property; however, ATV use is prohibited. Interaction with GuestsThere are no other guests near the house, except for various wildlife cruising through the remote area. The NeighborhoodThere is a store, Melby's Eatery, 2 miles away with excellent diner food, sandwiches, homemade pizzas, and even movie rentals if you want to bring a computer and cozy up. They'll even let you charge your batteries and phones, etc., while you eat. Owners are gay-friendly, and own a small gas station just before the store. There's also a pretty cool bison farm just beyond Melby's that is owned by some great progressive types that we've come to refer to as neighbors. Marta's bakery--nextdoor to that--is the real European deal (and mostly just open in the summer). 76 Pleasant St in Norway has probably the best Portland-caliber food in all of western Maine. Basically, there's things to do and places to explore if getting shacked up makes you antsy or you just desire to hit up some local flavors. Most people arrive at the house with bigger plans but just end up staying in.... Getting AroundNo public transportation. You really need a vehicle to at least arrive at Hersey Road. Other Things to NoteThere are a multitude of games, puzzles, and magazines at the house, and a few bird feeders if you like watching Bird TV. That said, in choosing to stay here, you are responsible for yourself and your own quality of experience; if you need to be entertained, this space is not for you.

The SpaceThe main house has a full kitchen, dining area, living room, screened porch, first floor bedroom w/queen bed, and two loft rooms, each with a single bed. The bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet. If your group is larger than four people, we have a "bunkhouse" across the yard from the main house for an additional fee. This really cute building has one set of bunk beds, and a loft space above. All the bunkhouse mattresses are the air type. All the floors are hand-painted, some with stencils or stripes. Every room has wonderful water views. The camp is surrounded by woods, but has a sunny, level yard. Perfect for badminton! The pond is small and quiet - motorized boats are limited to slow putt-putt types. The water is great for swimming, and a favorite of kayakers & canoeists. A few days here means enjoying the call of loons, croaking bullfrogs, the whir of hummingbirds, privacy, and fun in the water. New this year, we've added electrical outlets in the two loft rooms. Next up, the bunkhouse will get power. (PS it already gets WiFi and has a battery-operated lamp). Guests may use the dock, kayak and canoe. We have a 2-1/2 acre lot, and the surrounding woods and views make it feel like we practically own the pond. Most of the other camps on the pond are also secluded and quiet. Some of the "quaint" aspects of camp are: There is no land telephone line. There is, however, WiFi, and we'll provide you with the password. The kitchen ceiling is about 6'-3" high. The other ceilings are of average height. Bugs, such as mosquitos, come out in the evening, but are generally manageable with bug spray --- hey, you're out in the Maine woods - what do you expect! :~) Our water supply at the house comes from a small well, so we ask guests to be mindful of their water use in the kitchen and bathroom. Comments from a recent guest: "My family and I stayed at this camp during the past summer (2013). The location on the lake is perfect, with a shallow sandy bottom where the kids had a blast. The dock was great for launching the canoes and kayaks. The lake itself was very peaceful and serene with wonderful views. There were numerous hiking trails within a few minutes drive of the camp. The house itself is quaint, very clean, and has a great screened in porch looking out on the lake. There is one bathroom which has a shower, toilet, and a sink. All were very clean. Upstairs are two bedrooms with large windows also looking out on the lake. Great view to wake up to. There is a general store as well as a local restaurant about a 5 min drive just up the road where you can get some essentials or grab a rather tasty meal. Overall our experience was absolutely wonderful and we are looking forward to another visit." -- Pete Guest AccessGuests may use the dock, kayak and canoe. Located on the western shore of Lake Keewaydin on a very quiet, private road, the cottage has a beautiful, open view across Lake Keewaydin to the east that provides beautiful sunrises or great evening viewing with backlighting that illuminates the mountains on the far shore. Many people who have stayed at the cottage remark at how pleasant and relaxing it is to either sip coffee on the dock in the morning sun; sit on the porch while they read, relax or socialize; and listen to the cry of the loons at any time of the day. Each year a pair of loons lives by the lake. The cottage has a living room with stereo, sitting/TV/reading room, full bath with shower, and complete kitchen on the first floor. It has two bedrooms on the second floor - one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. A small, comfortable, single sleeping area is found under the staircase. It is heated by a substantial propane wall-mounted heater. The kitchen is fully equipped and complete with a gas stove, large refrigerator, sink and abundant counter areas and cabinets. It is surrounded on two sides by a large covered porch, with a 16-foot portion completely enclosed by screens. In addition, there is a very cozy, separate, Scandinavian-type bunk house close to the lake that contains two bunk beds, seating and a small, private porch - ideal for children or to just gain privacy. Outside, there is ample room for play by the lake, with a barbeque pit, gas grill, hammock and area for a horse-shoe game. The cottage comes complete with a new DSL/WiFi connection, a canoe, two kayaks,a dock and a swimming float - assuring a great time by the lake. During the months of July and August, the lake water temperature near the surface is typically very comfortable - ranging from 74 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on whether there has been a great deal of warm weather, sun, wind and/or rain. The water is very clean because the leak is fed by streams from the mountains. Very few motorboats (only a few on weekends) and several conoes and kayaks use the lake. However, jet skis are not allowed on the lake. Many renters have had excellent fishing luck in the lake, where several large bass and trout have been caught. Therefore, the lake assures a unique experience and a range of opportunities to have a fun and relaxing vacation. Beds: 1 Double Bed, 4 Twin Beds, 2 Sofa Beds Deposits: Damage deposit of $300.

Summer rentals of family compounds like this are VERY difficult to find. They are also often very expensive. Rental agents in the area say it's not uncommon to try to piece together a family reunion rental from several properties. That ends up costing much more and the cabins are never together like this. Your rental includes the entire 4 cabin compound. Keywords: Compound
