The SpaceThis apartment is on the second floor of a quaint house on a relatively quiet one-way street. The style inside our apartment could be described as cute, shabby/chic with a little artistic flare, opening up to a beautiful river view. Our furnished space is an excellent place for short visits from a few days to a few months. We can easily accommodate RPI parents and staff, EMPAC artists-in-residence, corporate travelers, displaced home owners due to remodeling, mortgage closing or an emergency. Let us put up your out-of-town guests looking for a little more comfort and spaciousness than what a hotel can offer. We have three small bedrooms each with a bed--one queen mattress and two full size beds with futon mattresses. (We also have a futon couch which makes into an extra full size bed in the "river living room," although this couch is not as comfy as beds in bedrooms). There's also a outdoor couch on the 2nd floor deck, that I (Branda) have been known to sleep on in the summer, because I love the sound of the river and birds and sleeping with the stars, but it isn't really comfortable for sleeping and you need to be short! So much to love! We have the best of both worlds -- an urban neighborhood with a back yard sitting on one of the most beautiful natural spots you could find! Look out at a view of the confluence of the mighty Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. A visit to our River Home is not only offers a beautiful view, but a direct opportunity to learn about the history of the beginning of the Industrial Revolution! We're surrounded by historic places to explore, directly across from Peebles Island and Lock 2 on the Erie Canal! Plus, just a short walk down our street is writer Herman Melville's home, where he began his career as a writer with his first two novels "Typee and Oomoo!" Guest AccessYou have access to the entire second floor, which includes a lovely private porch with a gorgeous view of the river! There's a little couch on the porch, and on a beautiful night one can view reflections of the stars on the shimmering water. If you are looking for a quaint 2nd floor apartment in a working class neighborhood in a historic spot in Troy with an exceptional view, we hope you would find this to your liking. HUDSON RIVER: Guests have access to the shared back yard and deck, with a trap door and ladder down to the Hudson River shore. The deck has a picnic table, and is a spectacular place to have your morning coffee or even do yoga! There's lovely flowers in the yard. If you want to bring a kayak or canoe, there is easy access... you can put your kayak in just 1/2 block North of us, where you can drive right down to the river's edge. And, you can bring your kayak or canoe back to the River House shore, tie it up just off our deck, and walk up the deck stairs and be home. Sometimes, directly across the river, the town of Waterford offers special celebrations, such as the annual Tugboat Round-up (9/5/14-9/7/14) with a weekend including the Tugboat Parade on the river, music, food and vendors, followed by fireworks at dusk (9/7/14). On our River House deck, we are treated to a fabulous view, away from the crowds across the river, of the boat parade and fireworks! The light of the sunset is exceptional, and we are in a very historic spot at the confluence of the Hudson and the Mohawk Rivers. Some people swim in the river and eat the fish, but we recommend against it. Swimming in the Hudson is not recommended, however there are many beautiful spots around for swimming. PARKING: We have on street parking, and there is always something available on the block. (Please note: you cannot park in the driveway North of our house, for that is neighbor's property, not ours.) However, you should always find parking available on the street, up at the end of the block or around the block. Interaction with GuestsOur beautiful back yard and deck on the river is shared with the 1st floor tenants, who are very wonderful people! They are a young couple, with a quiet elderly gentleman who is developmentally delayed. Our downstairs neighbors have truly enjoyed the guests so far, but they generally like to keep to themselves and they appreciate guests following the rules, which include being quiet after midnight and not having parties. They are quiet, and they appreciate guests who are quiet too. There is a barbeque and there is a washer/dryer, and of course a nice deck with an awesome view, which they happily share. The NeighborhoodIf you enjoy a quaint historic spot at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, this could be a great neighborhood for you. This is not a typical tourist spot in any way -- yet is imbedded with deep history. We are on a quiet working class block on a one way street with an exceptional view from our back yard! Our River Home is in Lansingburgh, which is the Northern most part of the City of Troy. We have beautiful views, historic sites, and easy access to basic needs. We are right across from Lock #2 of the Erie Canal, and the Waterford Visitors Center and Peebles Island, just below the 126th St. bridge across the river. (We are between 122nd and 123rd St.) Our furnished space is an excellent place for short visits from a few days to a few months. More about Waterford, NY: The Town of Waterford is situated in the southeastern corner of Saratoga County, 12 miles north of Albany at the junction of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, and the junction of the Erie and Champlain Canals. It is the home of the “Waterford Flight”, the highest set of lift locks in the world. In 1816 the old precinct of "Halve Maan" (Halfmoon) was divided into two separate towns, Halfmoon and Waterford. The Village of Waterford is located within the town and holds the distinction of being the oldest continually incorporated village in the United States. More about the Erie Canal: The Erie Canal is an artificial waterway that connects the Hudson River to Lake Erie. This historic waterway, first completed in 1825, is one of the most important projects in the development and success of New York and the United States. Then Governor DeWitt Clinton had a great vision to create a man-made waterway connecting Albany to Buffalo which would allow raw materials from the west to be transported cheaply to the populated eastern seaboard. His idea was met with harsh criticism and his opposition dubbed the idea as Clinton's Ditch or Clinton's Folly, but he pressed on. On the fourth of July, 1817, Clinton's Ditch was started in Rome, where there was a long level section to be dug. The Erie Canal was completed from Albany to Buffalo in the fall of 1825 and was an immediate success; it secured New York as the Empire State. To this day the Erie Canal still serves the boating community in providing safe passage to Upstate New York and beyond. The canal was enlarged and straightened many times and the current version stretches 338 miles from Waterford on the Hudson River to Lake Erie near Buffalo. The canal was originally built as a means for commercial traffic, but it has transformed into a recreational boater's dream. The Erie Canal is lined with dozens of canal towns offering all the services that a transient boater would need. Today's canal has 34 Locks and is at least 120 feet wide and 12 feet deep. It has a vertical clearance of 21 feet between Waterford and Three Rivers (Oswego Canal junction), and 15.5 feet between the Three Rivers and Lake Erie. The locks are significantly larger than those of 175 years ago at 328 feet long and 45 feet wide, large enough for almost all recreational cruisers as well as large commercial barges to pass through. The largest vessels can be as large as 300 feet long by 43.5 feet wide. For more info: (URL HIDDEN) More about Herman Melville's House: The Herman Melville House was home of author Herman Melville between 1838 and 1847. The building is preserved and maintained by the Lansingburgh Historical Society. Getting AroundWe have a great location for getting around! WALKING: We are walking distance from two 24-hour grocery stores and restaurants. It's a short walk across the Hudson River on the 126th St. Bridge (just 3 blocks North of us). Then you are in old town of Waterford, home to Lock 2 on the Erie Canal. Check out the operating lock, as well as the historic old lock. Take a beautiful walk on the Old Champlain Canal walking path and hike and picnic at Peebles Island State Park. TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES You can also take a 10 minute bus ride to downtown Troy! If you're a bike enthusiast, Troy is a town for you, for it is a very bike-able city. There's a passionate community dedicated to alternative transportation. In fact, just 20 blocks away is Troy Bike Rescue, a community bike shop in North Troy! There's also beautiful bike routes touring the historic sites of the early Industrial Revolution in Troy, including the Cohoes Falls and a beautiful bike trail where you can drive from Troy to Albany along the Hudson River. AUTOMOBILES We are conveniently located near the freeway -- 20 minutes from the Albany Airport, Amtrak Station and Bus Station. We are part of the Capital Region, with Albany, Schenectady less than 30 minutes away. For those of you who love the horse races and the elegance of old NY, Saratoga Springs is only 30 minutes away. This is a great place to stay for those of you going to the Saratoga Race Track during the days of August! There's lots of great day trips that are around an hour away, including the Berkshires & Lenox, Massachusetts, Bennington, Vermont, and Chatham, NY. Interested in the burgeoning arts and antiques scene south of us in Hudson, NY? Check out Woodstock and the Catskills, or go West to Cooperstown for the Glimmerglass Opera or a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame! And we're under 3 hours from NYC, Montreal, Cape Cod and more! FOOD: There's an awesome Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in downtown Troy! People drive from afar to shop for local foods, a special feature our our city of Troy! For places that deliver, here are a few suggestions: Testo's is an excellent old family style italian restaurant. If you want, this is an easy walk from our home, just a few blocks walk away (124th and 4th Ave.), but they deliver too! Dinosaur Barbeque has off-site catering, but they ask for 48 hours for pick up and delivery orders. Look for great local beer at Brown's Brewing, a local brew pub in an historic loft building with a great outdoor deck on the river. There's also Jose Malone's, for upscale Mexican Irish food and an excellent margarita. Ryans' Wake is a nice bar in a beautiful old building, all on the "River Street" block just north downtown in the block above the Menands Bridge. There also the Ale House, in North Troy along the river, just a few minutes drive or bike ride from our home. McGrievey's is an Irish tavern and restaurant (URL HIDDEN) across the Hudson: take the 126th Bridge and walk or drive few blocks up on the right, at 91 Broad Street in Waterford. Other Things to NoteIn Troy, there's historic architecture, arts and cultural spaces, academic institutions, and places to eat and enjoy life!
