Interaction with GuestsWe know that when traveling, sometimes you crave human interaction in your day and sometimes you want a break from it all. We want to accommodate your needs, so please tell us how we can help. We tend to be very social, with lots of friends locally, some of whom you may meet when they stop by for tea or to split the farmshare box. Your host: Melissa has traveled to more than 20 countries for business and pleasure, on five continents, which you'll see reflected in our home's art and books. She is an independent management consultant and during the workday has a varied schedule between her home office and local meetings and events. Her boyfriend, who has his own residence, enjoys meeting guests when he visits. The NeighborhoodOur location is at the edge of small commercial zone within a primarily residential neighborhood. We love that there are lots of trees and that we have the combination of easy parking, public transit, and walkability. Within three blocks are several restaurants and a small grocery store, where they make their own Greek yogurt. Extend your walk to 10-15 minutes and you'll have a dozen or more restaurants -- Sofra, Shangri-La, and Savinos, for instance -- plus ice cream, coffee, clothing, antiques, and gift shops (must see: Wescott Mercantile). Also, studios for yoga and other exercise. Melissa's favorite place in Boston is the Mount Auburn Cemetery, located about halfway between the house and Harvard Square. It's a beautiful arboretum-like space, with fantastic views of the Boston area from its Washington Tower. "Recognized as one of the most significant designed landscapes in the country, Mount Auburn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003." It's a favorite spot for urban birders, and I've seen foxes, turkeys, bats, rabbits, and turtles. (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundThe #73 bus line is one block away, taking you two miles to Harvard Square and the subway (the "T"). You'll have a parking spot in a shared driveway; there is also lots of on-street parking, free, from 7am-1am. The airport is 20 minutes away in light traffic and an hour or so via public transit (silver line to red line to #73 bus). Recommended smartphone apps: Catch The T, xtBus, Lyft, Uber. ***Note about parking: There is ample street parking from 7am to 1am, for free. Driveway space is available adjacent to the house for overnight and most other times. It is in "serial" so your car will be parked behind one or two other cars, and we will coordinate moving it as necessary. Other Things to NoteThis is a "shoes off" household, with hardwood floors throughout and rugs in key locations (like your bedside). After leaving your shoes by the apartment door, help yourself to slippers in the basket there.

The SpaceThe apartment is more than half of the first floor of a grand victorian house, built in 1859, that used to occupy the entire city block where it's located. It has 11-foot ceilings, two (non-working) marble fireplaces and a living room with walnut paneling and butler's pantry. A great place to stay while exploring Boston and Cambridge. Perfect for a Beantown vacation, visiting colleges or an academic sabbatical. Your patio, right next to the front door, would be a perfect place to enjoy breakfast or an evening glass of wine. There's a small park nearby for a short walk, and a bike path along the Charles River for more exercise. Guest AccessThe apartment has its own entrance and its own off-street parking spot (second space on request). Interaction with GuestsWe live in another apartment in the same house. The rental unit has its own entrance, so we don't need to interact with the guest unless requested. We're happy to provide guidance about Watertown or the Boston area, and we're here to help with anything else you might need during your stay. Dan is a Boston-area native and Sarah has lived here since 1980, so we can help with planning activities in and around the city. The NeighborhoodWatertown, just west of Boston, is a small, quiet town of two- and single-family homes. There's very little traffic in our part of town. It's very convenient to downtown Boston, to Cambridge and to Route 128. There are many nice restaurants within a mile radius. You can walk to Watertown Square, where there are many amenities of a small downtown. The Charles River is a great place to explore. Getting AroundThere's an express bus to Downtown and busses to Harvard, Kenmore and Central Squares. Public transit takes you easily to Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard, MIT and Boston University. You can drive to Harvard Square or downtown Boston in less than 15 minutes. Or borrow one of our bikes. Other Things to NoteContinental breakfast provided. We'll supply makings for coffee and tea, milk, yogurt, granola and toast. We have a friendly golden retriever, though he never goes in the rental unit (which is completely pet-free). You might see him in our fenced-in back yard and he's always available for informal canine companionship! Our Tiny House, in the side yard, could house two additional guests or be used as an inspirational studio or office (for an additional fee of $75/night). Seasonal use only as it is not heated for winter use.

Hopefully we can meet. And I will definitely be available if you have any questions or concerns about the apartment. Great neighborhood feel with easy access to the city. Both inbound and outbound 71 bus stop is less than two minutes from my house. It takes about 10 minutes to get to harvard square on the 71 inbound, and easy access to Boston from there. Depending on where in Boston you are going and at what time, it is often faster to go outbound to Watertown square and make a transfer to either the 57 or 504 express bus. I always use the "where's my bus" app to get exact arrival times for buses. A taxi to boston will cost about $25. This is not a full kitchen. There is no cooktop or open cooking appliances in the apartment. The guest apartment does not have access to a washer/dryer, however there is a laundromat close by that offers same day drop off service. You have full control over the baseboard heat. Please be comfortable, but also mindful of energy consumption while out. The central air is controlled from my apartment. It is always cool and comfortable during the summer months. I live upstairs. The SpaceYou get a private apartment with a private entrance. You need not share a bathroom, kitchen or any room. The guest area is on the first floor of a two family house.
