The Space"Casa de la Cruz" was a former Seventh Day Adventist Church with a two story school attached to the church building, formerly having four classrooms. In all it is 5,800 sq. ft. with 11 separate rooms. It is now zoned "single family residence" and is officially licensed through the City of Watsonville as its first "Bed and Breakfast" within the city limits. "Casa de la Cruz" was awarded the "Landmark Award" by "The Museum of Art and History" in Santa Cruz, for the most improved historical building in Santa Cruz County in 2007. The entire building was restored, the exterior and the interior. All wood floors were refinished. Each room has its own free standing cast iron gas Jotul stove from Norway, complete with with cathedral doors and beautiful realistic logs and flames. The "Church Room" and "top floors of the school room" (Bedroom One and sitting room/library) have a New York loft style look as the wood fiber ceilngs panels have been removed and the old redwood sheathing has been exposed and skylights added for an open and light filled ambiance. When you book both" Bedroom One' and "Bedroom Two," you will have access to the "The Library," "The Church Room" and the "Master Bath' which is in all, 4,800 sq. ft. Casa de la Cruz is in a residential neighborhood and about 4 blocks from downtown. It is on a busy corner so if traffic noise bothers you may not want to stay here. Friday and Saturday night are relatively quiet as opposed to Sunday night through Thursday night which would be workdays in the morning and produce more traffic. There will be a continental breakfast supplied (coffee, tea, Martinelli's Apple Juice (made in Watsonville), prepackaged breakfast bar, and fruit. These items will be left in the refrigerator and/or in a basket near the microwave area in the "Kitchen Center." There is a coffeemaker provided, coffee, tea, sweeteners, and half and half (if you request it ahead of time). There is no cooked breakfast provided. There are many great breakfast places within walking distance, or less than 5 minutes away in a car. Restaurants are marked in the "Guidebook" on this site. Menus will be provided of my favorite restaurants as soon as I collect them. There any many great restaurants in town for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and American. Ask me for recommendations and directions. There is a refrigerator, a microwave and a coffeemaker in the "Kitchen Center" of the "Church Room." There are paper plates, plastic glasses and silverware also available. No cooking is allowed except in the microwave. All food garbage must be deposited in garbage can outside door. Recyclables will be put in provided can marked "recyclables" near exterior door. Other garbage not recyclable (and not food garbage) will be put in the can marked "garbage." If by chance some ants show up there is a can of "raid" in the kitchen center in the compartment below the table with the microwave. (This has only happened on occasion when food items are left out.) Guest AccessBesides their bedroom, the guests have access to: 1) the "Great Church Room" (3,000 sq ft, 40 ft ceilings, with soft couches, 80" screen tv, music, fireplace, wifi, work out area and children's library). 2) the Master Bathroom which was the former Pastors's Study, is complete with a fireplace, huge walk in shower (the former baptismal tank), a claw foot tub, a pedestal sink, toilet and an additional half bath. "Bedroom One" is on the second floor of the former "School Building" and was the former "Junior Classroom." It has a Cal King bed, fireplace, balcony, and an adjoining library/sitting room which was formerly the "Senior Classroom." "Bedroom Two" is at the back of the church which is connected to the "Church Room" by a hallway. This bedroom has a "Queen" bed, fireplace, and has a half bath attached. This was the former "nursery" so it has the "mother's toilet" and the "child's toilet," complete with the original doors for privacy. It also has a separate "Mens" bathroom across the hall with a "hat room," sink, two urinals and a toilet with the original door for privacy.This bedroom is considerably smaller than the Master Bedroom. "Bedroom One" and "Bedroom Two" will be booked at the same time only if the guests are friends/ relatives of each other. This is to avoid two unrelated parties sharing the "Church Room" and the "Master Bath." There is great privacy for each separate guest/guests as Bedroom Two is at the back of the church, and Bedroom One is on the second floor of the "School Building," in a separate building joined by a hallway to the church room. Both bedrooms have easy access to the "Church Room" and "Master Bath." Feel free to make an inquiry and ask questions so i can accommodate your individual situation and needs. Interaction with GuestsBoth bedrooms will only be booked by friends or relatives of guests booking the the other bedroom. The bedrooms are totally separate from each other as one is at the back of the "Church Room," and the other bedroom is on the second floor of the "school building." Both buildings are adjoining by a hall, and easy access to each other. Both parties can meet in the "Church Room" or "The Library/Sitting Room" for socialization. The host family is in a totally separate area down a staircase and has a separate entrance and driveway, so the guests have total privacy. Since the guests have their continental breakfast provided in the "kitchen center of the "Church Room" the host will check the guests in and out and they are are their own during their visit unless they have questions, suggestions or concerns. The host family can be be reached for questions or concerns on their cell phone, which is provided after the reservation is made. The NeighborhoodCasa de la Cruz is in a residential neighborhood. It is close to downtown and to many restaurants. It is on a four way stop corner. Staying Sunday night to Thursday night there is more traffic in the mornings as they are work days. Staying Friday and Saturday night there will be less traffic in the morning. The church is one foot thick concrete walls and is quiet inside. The bedrooms have single pane windows so if traffic noise bothers you, you may not want to book at "The Casa." Getting AroundHighway One is ten minutes away. Highway 101 is 20 minutes away. There is a bus stop that is a block away that will take you into Capitola and Santa Cruz. The Watsonville Airport (for private planes) is 10 minutes away and easy parking. I have had a friend fly in from Los Angelos for the weekend and it was a breeze. It is an easy drive to Elkhorn Slough for hiking , Moss Landing for kayaking or ocean tours with wine and cheese. Wine tasting is close by in the Corralitas mountains, Soquel Mountains or Santa Cruz Mountains. I understand that most guests are traveling from a distance and may be stopping along the way so I am very flexible. Just letting me know within a 2-3 hour window is fine. I am usually up late so up to midnight is ok. There are two parking spots off the street provided on Lincoln Street driveway to the left of the front of the church (in front of a black gate). For extra security car can be parked behind gate if requested.You will have your own separate entrance. The entire church and school has security flood lights mounted on the exterior of the buildings including the parking area and and the your private entrance. The gate can be dead bolted from the inside and the door knob lock can be lock with the gate key which will be giving to you. I have lived here for 12 years and have never had any security problems. I have a very complete security system and have always felt safe at the "Casa." There is a yard outside the "church room" that has a high wall and wrought iron gates for . There is a small table and two chairs, and wicker couch and two chairs, and an umbrella. If guests are staying for two or more days sheet and pillow cases will be changed when requested. For each additional change there will be a charge of $50. There is a Catholic Church 4 blocks away, a First Methodist Church one block away and an Episcapal Church about 8 blocks away and many other churches throughout the town. If guests are interested the host will share before photos of the church and school previous to the buildings being restored.         Shorebirds 259 offers one of the best views available in the condos. The location is prime but as it is located so close to the ocean the wifi is spotty and sometimes totally unavailable. We can not guarantee the connection.
