Part of this Lakehouse was one of the original "Old Kernville" homes that was relocated to its present location when the Damn was built to create Lake Isabella in the early 1950's. At the time of the move the house was owned by Mr. Burt James a pioneer of the Kern River Valley and founder of the popular grocery store, James Store now called James Sierra Gateway Market. Ownership of the home changed hands within the family members several times until it became Mr. Clint James, nephew of Burt whom then renovated the house to become part of Sierra Gateway Cottages. Each cottage has been renovated to suite our guests with the comforts of home such as complete kitchens, private patios, walkways, landscaping and propane grills. All of our rentals are separate structures, which means there are no adjoining walls. Interaction with GuestsThere may or may not be someone around to offer help or direct you at any given time but for the most part we are easily reachable to answer any questions or concerns. Ample resource guides and books are left in the accommodation to answer your questions. Our policy is to assume our guests are private people who treasure their space and privacy. We leave you to yourself after a short orientation unless you reach out to us with a question or concern. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is one of the things that sets this property apart. It is remote and quiet. Parcels are 2.5 acres and greater. Most people come for a retreat. The few neighbors you may encounter on a walk or hike are well-mannered and helpful. Hiking trails and quiet roads are available close by for hiking or birding. It is late autumn now so weather is cold at night and cool in the day. It is cold in the high country for an alpine experience if the roads are not closed due to snow. Our approach road is paved and maintained and the address is well marked and easily found. Know that this is a rural area so if you are going to arrive late, it is best to have your supplies with you already as things are not open 24/7 here. 8 PM for close by; 11 PM half hour drive. This area is remote. We are not in the thick of it; i.e., no Starbucks or other places nearby. Getting AroundPublic transport is very limited. You will need a vehicle. Please note the roads to Trail of 100 Giants is closed for the winter as of 11/27/16. Other Things to NoteIt is late autumn so temperatures have moderated and are in the high 50s and 60s in the day and cool (30s, 40s) at night. Roads to the high country and the giant trees could close at any time due to snow. Lots of walks and hiking available locally. It is already cold in the high country so bring appropriate clothing. Audubon's Kern River Preserve, Red Rock Canyon, the Kern River, Trail of 100 Giants (road closed for the winter as of 11/27/16), the Nuui Kunni Native American Cultural Center and the Pacific Crest Trail are nearby. Lone Pine, Death Valley and even other sites are two to three hours away. Perfect stop if you are travelers who need a break or city dwellers looking to escape to peace and quiet. The Kern Plateau roads are closed for the winter and all roads to the high country including Lloyd Meadow and Great Western Divide Highway are closed for the winter. P.S.: If you want additional information about the local forests you can call the US Forest Ranger Station Kernville location (phone number posted in the Guidebook section) or I suggest searching 'Nature Ali' in any search engine for a detailed look at nature in the area. Airbnb rules prevent posting the actual link here.
