The SpaceWelcome to Rivendell! A little bit of peace and quiet tucked away into one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu.
Set on the crest of a mountain, Rivendell overlooks tea gardens, eucalyptus forests and a quaint little village complete with its own village church. It is just a short drive away from Wellington, an old fashioned army town, that still retains all the grandeur of its colonial heritage – think Passage to India and Merchant Ivory settings.
Rivendell took two years to plan, five years to build and the end result was 5,200 square feet of undisturbed peace. The flower-bedecked house has a massive wraparound veranda and patio that provides all the space you will need – sit privately in a planter's chair with a book from the library, snooze in an easy chair in the sunshine, or just watch the tea grow from your favourite spot in the garden.
Built along colonial lines, Rivendell offers all the comforts of a home away from home, including a rather lovely kitchen where most people seem to end up spending a lot of time. The two main guest rooms have their own little seating areas and built-in closets and en-suite bathrooms. Both have easy access to a first-floor terrace that offers a stunning vista of the surrounding hills. The cosy room downstairs is smaller with a double bed and a bathroom just across the corridor.
Tucked away into a cosy little spot in the Nilgiris, overlooking the rather grandly called Sugarloaf Hill, the space was built and decorated to be a home, with art and artefacts lovingly collected from around the world, not the least of which are our two dogs, Zeffie and Piggy. (Piggy because she will eat ANYTHING... so please don't feed her.). The garden is an explosion of colour throughout the year and the pillars around the veranda are encased in flowering creepers that tend to run riot if left unchecked.
There's something about the place... pictures don't quite capture the feeling. But please... come and see it for yourself. Guest AccessYou'll have the run of the place, though we suspect you'll mainly be outdoors in the verandah and garden. Our bedroom is kept locked, and only our housekeeper Gloria is allowed access to the cooking facilities. She really does make the best dosas, biryani and egg curry ever. Bring a laptop if you want to watch movies on the big TV downstairs... our DVD collection is geared to our tastes... so probably best if you bought your own. We ask that you return all the discs and book to their original space. Interaction with GuestsWe're available on phone, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or email if you have any trouble. That said, Gloria and Leo who live on the premises will be able to help you with most stuff, including renting taxis and access to a doctor on the off chance you get pecked by a bulbul. The NeighborhoodRivendell is part of a rather exclusive gated community. We ask that you respect the peace and tranquility of the area. Also, being close to a military zone we cannot permit any sort of aerial photography - the two retired generals and a retired colonel who are within spitting distance will not view you (or us) favourably if you do. Getting AroundIf you have your own car, there is ample parking, if you have a driver, he can use the staff facilities to bathe and wash. However, we do not have rooms for drivers. If you need, a taxi can be arranged... our regular taxi comes highly recommended and we encourage you to use him. Leo and Gloria will be able to connect you to him if need be. Other Things to NoteRivendell is our home. Please be careful with our stuff. Most of it has no market value, but it holds memories for us and is therefore irreplaceable.
