The SpaceThe main room is barrel-vaulted and lined with raw ply. No stains or other treatments. Fittings are good quality recycled pieces that give the space its unique and soft quality. All lighting is warm. Just outside is your own small garden space with al fresco table and a BBQ (for cooking outdoors only!) The alcove has a microwave, electric kettle and toaster, and a small fridge as well as cutlery and crockery. There'll be milk in the fridge and cereal and/or bread supplied if you'd like it. This is a tranquil space in the country - mid-way between Auckland and Whangarei. Guest AccessYou'll be free to use gardens and walk thru' the bush. Some animals like human interaction. There are lovely walks along country roads, organic gardens nearby for the best salads ever, and horses. Not mine but sometimes available to ride if their owners are about. Interaction with GuestsIf I'm about I'll be delighted to show the best beaches, parks, sculpture/art parks and galleries and anything else I might know of interest to you. The NeighborhoodAround me, apart from traditional farming people, there are artists, musicians, organic horticulturalists, writers and IT people and the Matakana markets and cinemas are reasonably close - (I'm assuming you'll have a car) - as are beaches and parks. Gibbs Farm Park with fabulous modern and massive contemporary sculpture is on the Kaipara Coast Highway/SH16. Booking is essential to see it all but many pieces can be seen from one of the side roads. Ask if you'd like more info on your drive up. Getting AroundDespite overlooking the North Auckland Railway there are no rural public transport services in New Zealand. Sad eh? Other Things to NoteIn the carport - under cover - is a charge point for electric-drive cars. We've calculated the cost of overnight charging - after guests drove one here from Auckland - and it's NZ$12. But I want to encourage this technology so it'll cost $10 per overnight charge. Much cheaper than gas. The house itself looks over the North Auckland rail line and a wetland and the bird-life here is prolific. Tui, kereru (wood pigeon), piwakawaka (fantails), tiny waxeyes, pukekos and paradise ducks. And the Australasian harrier hawk or kahu. At night, when you're lucky, you'll hear the call of the ruru - the native owl. And then there is the ubiquitous magpie - our 'Australian cousin'. Made famous in the poem by Denis Glover: "When Tom and Elizabeth took the farm the bracken made their bed And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies said Tom's hand was strong to the plough Elizabeth's lips were red And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies said Year in year out they worked while the pines grew overhead And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies said But all the beautiful crops soon went to the mortgage man instead And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies said Elizabeth is dead now (it's years ago) Old Tom went light in the head And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies said The farm's still there Mortgage corporations couldn't give it away And quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle the magpies say" The water supply here is rain 'harvested' and is delicious! Its use needs to be conserved tho' not 'religiously'. The same goes for 'waste'. No chemicals or non-biodegradable items down the drain please. Keep it clean for the animals, plants and birds!
