The SpaceGreat house for artistic retreats or weekend escapes in the Hudson River Valley near Woodstock and Saugerties. Perched on mountain with views of the river valley and seasonal river views, vintage 1920's 3 BR Arts and Crafts house takes you out of time while giving you access to nearby arts communities, HITS, skiing and other Catskill culture.
Redoing old houses is one of my loves. I did this house a few years ago after finding it virtually untouched from a single owner who lived here until he died at 105 years old (imagine a trip to your grandparent's house int he 40's or 50's). It is simple, off the internet/cable grid and has a lovely historical character. Many things in the house were just found there.
The view from the sunny front porch is great for hanging out with friends and family or contemplative work such as writing. Stars are clear at night. House sits on the hillside near a main road, a train, a post office. A short walk up the hill is a retreat "grotto" with hammock up the hill for time in nature and a vintage parlor stove for chilly months. This house is my own writing retreat. It is full of poetry and books, light, air. I enjoy having others here who respect the special 'out of time' atmosphere here. This property is quirky but wonderful, much like this region. If you are looking for a cheap place to have a party or would all in all rather be in a hotel, this is probably not for you.
1600 s.f. house has an open room for yoga and movement (converts to a large DR for larger groups or in winter), a living room, a kitchen and a large porch. It technically has 4BR used as follows: One with a full bed, one with a single, one is a meditation room where double futon can be set up for a bedroom, and one is a bedroom (used as a creative space) with another full futon on the floor. In sum: One full bed, one single bed, two full futons. Porch furniture converts to single beds if needed.
Good food and shopping can be found in Saugerties under 4 miles away, Catskill 7 miles away or Woodstock 14 miles away. There are no nearby stores and only a few houses, but there is a post office across the street. You will need a car.
Great for train lovers as train passes in view of the front porch. Not good for light sleepers. The number of trains if highly variable. The house uses mainly ceiling and window fans for cooling. However there are 2 window air conditioners on site for hot days. Guest AccessGuests have full access to house except for certain closet areas.. Interaction with GuestsI generally do all interaction with guests by phone, but will occasionally be there at checkin or check out. The NeighborhoodIt is funky. Love the view of the Hudson Valley. Love the trains believe it or not. Yes, it happens that sometimes there is a lot of train activitiy, so if this isn't your cup of tea, not a good choice but there are also times when it is very quiet. I actually like the variety and their intensity. I find it good for creative processes.
The mountain was mined by the concrete company years ago so there are quarries on the hill (but be careful about using them for swimming. The police do arrest for that!) Getting AroundNo. Other Things to NoteKitchen is fully but simply equipped. I supply linens (sheets, tablecloths and up to 6 towels), coffee, tea and cereal. When I can get there just before your stay I may also leave juice, milk, fruit or bread for your stay (sorry, I can't always, but help yourself if I do). Wood for the parlor stove is also available on site. If you use more than one or so bags of wood a day, however, I am grateful for a wood contribution.
