The SpaceA perfect retreat in every season. High on a mountainside in the midst of 103 acres of bird-filled forest, walking/skiing trails and a small pond for wildlife, Patchwork Farm Retreat in Westhampton MA overlooks the beautiful Pioneer Valley. The Eagles Nest is the whole top floor of the main Patchwork Cottage and has its own private entrance. It is a lovely suite of two light, airy rooms, plus a covered roof-top cupola. A private balcony off the suite holds court over a garden, wide terraces and an ancient Ginkgo tree. As necessary, ceiling fans, central air and heat keep the Eagles Nest wonderfully comfortable. On the southeast side of the Eagles Nest is a bed-sitting room with ceiling fan, extra-comfy queen-sized bed, reading chair, walls of windows, and built-in cherry bookshelves. Stairs pull from the ceiling to give access to a covered, lighted cupola above the Eagles Nest. It commands a panoramic view of the Pioneer Valley, Mt. Tom, the Holyoke Range, and Connecticut River. Eagles Nest guests have used the cupola to practice yoga, sleep, read, drink coffee at dawn and share wine with their friends at sunset. The adjoining northwest room has a private outside entrance, extra-comfy double futon bed, small closet, writing desk and chair, chest of drawers, small refrigerator, water dispenser, microwave, coffee/tea setup, lots of built-in shelves, glasses and dishes, and an elevator to other levels of house. A solid wooden door separates the two rooms for quiet and privacy. Eagles Nest's private bathroom has all amenities and is on the main floor of the cottage. The bathroom is accessible from the outside or inside by stairs or elevator. Eagles Nest is a perfect writer's or artist's retreat, or personal getaway for an individual, a couple of friends or a family. It's also close to Northampton and Smith College (15 minutes), Amherst (25 minutes) and it's a lovely drive to Tanglewood or Jacob's Pillow (50-60 minutes). The land, its trees and stones, its walking trails and wildlife pond have inspired many guests. For preparing food on your own, Eagles Nest has an electric water kettle, Keurig coffee maker supplied with caf & decaf coffee, microwave, water dispenser, small refrigerator, and dishes. We supply half & half, organic plain yogurt, fresh fruit, organic granola, and muffins to get you going on your first morning. In a tiny kitchenette downstairs next to the bathroom, you'll find a sink, extra dishes and a ceramic-lined electric skillet, should you like to cook eggs, grill the muffins, or sauté veggies for other meals. (We are a vegetarian household and ask that our guests not cook meat in the house—but we supply a small grill for outdoor cooking of whatever you wish). Wifi is available to check your email. The SpaceThe Glow Room at Indian Hollow is a history-rich 1850 post & beam barn, renovated in a light-filled, post modern style. Imagine getting out of your car, opening the screen door to a big porch that overlooks a leaping mountain brook, deep enough to dunk in. Chauncey Brook forms the east border & offers a serene and ferny welcome; overlooking it, there's a beautiful firepit surrounded by log benches. The SpaceAery: characterized by lightness and insubstantiality. "Figures light and aeriform come unlooked for and melt away"- Thomas Carlyle And so it is with The Aery where cares become light and stress melts away. The Aery is a hand-crafted screened pavilion set slightly above the main cottage at Patchwork Farm Retreat. Large screens and glass panels surround the space which is (partially) protected from the elements by full-surface bamboo blinds. A glass-fronted wood stove keeps the open-air cabin remarkably cozy, in the way a campfire warms the body and the spirit. Two cedar, fully-railed decks with wrought iron chairs and table extend the reach of the screen room. The larger deck is perfect for musicians, yoga practitioners, bird-watchers, picnics and children. The smaller deck was honored by a lovely wedding. From the Aery's decks, cantilevered over an old stone foundation, you look southeast over lawns, gardens, terraces, towering trees and the Holyoke Range, toward the rising sun. A small refrigerator, microwave, coffee press pot and tea kettle help guests feel at home right away, as do the comfortable wicker sofa, reading chair, "wedding hammock" and small zinc-topped table for eating or playing cards. But the most special coziness of all may be beneath flannel sheets and comforters of the heated queen airbed. You are welcome to use the sweet, tiny bathroom with its claw foot tub and hand-held shower, just twenty steps away off the kitchen of the main cottage. Sunset-orange towels are just for you. Here's what two recent guests wrote about spending the night in the Aery: Thank you for hosting me overnight in your glorious Aery. 'Glamping' at its best with such a comfy bed, screens to keep the bugs out but letting in the soft wind and rain on the roof. Made me think of my childhood, sleeping on the screen porch where the sounds of summer nights melded with my dreams. A perfect slumber to make me ready for a new day of writing with friends. - P. Chester, VT Imagine yourself on the side of a mountain, a gorgeous view in front of you, gardens all around, large screen and glass windows on four sides in an exquisitely crafted Aery, resting in a comfy bed, or writing at the table, or lounging on the sofa, a gentle breeze, birds singing, woods surrounding you with lots of trails--what more could you ask for? And to top it off, Patricia is a delightful host. Absolutely lovely place. I would highly recommend it to anyone. R. Southwick, MA Guest AccessFrom the Aery, you are only 20 steps to the claw foot tub and hand-held shower in the small bathroom off the kitchen in the main cottage. You are welcome to explore all 103 acres, to wander the terraces and hidden places; to hike the marked and groomed trails; to sit and dream at Angel Pond. Guests may use the main kitchen by special arrangement. Guests of a week or more will have access to the laundry facilities. All guests will have full use of our 103 forested acres, which include several miles of mapped hiking/skiing/snowshoeing trails, a wildlife pond, clearings and the gardens of Patchwork Farm. Interaction with GuestsWe love getting to know our guests, helping with directions, where to eat, where to swim and ski, learning about their lives. We are also aware that many guests arrive here weary, hoping to unplug, to take time to restore their spirits. So, we are available, but we are respectful of our guests' needs for privacy. The NeighborhoodWe love the woods, rivers, and lakes, but especially we love the people in these Western MA hill towns. We are a small town, but our new public library is a place of pride and enjoyment for all. Visitors are sure to love the local Outlook Farm on Rt 66 (10 minutes), and Straw Bale Cafe (7 minutes) on North Road, as well as the historic Blacksmith Museum in the center of town, near the iconic white-spired church. Within four miles, Bread Euphoria serves delicious home-made breads, soups, sandwiches, pastries, full meals and awesome coffee--and free, unlimited WiFi. Restaurants abound in nearby Florence and Northampton (15 minutes). Getting AroundPublic transportation does not reach us here in the country, but we have lots of space for your own vehicle and can recommend Enterprise Car Rental in Northampton as a good place to pick up a car. Other Things to NoteAs The Aery has a small fridge, microwave, tea kettle and dishes, you are encouraged to bring food and drink for meals. Think of The Aery as a finely built tent in the woods where bears and other critters roam, and you will know how to handle your food. If you are new to outdoor, "fancy camping," we'll help you do it well.

The southern border is the Dead Branch Brook with its refreshing plunge pools. About a 1/4 mile downstream it joins the East Branch of the Westfield River, a federally-designated 'Wild and Scenic River.' We will provide you with maps and information about the area, which contains extraordinary opportunities for picnicking, fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, x-country skiing, snow-shoeing, photography and painting. And being alone, with someone you want to be alone with. This property is designed to inspire the maximum enjoyment of the 15+ square miles of open space that begins at its doorstep. The Glow Room is a launching pad. To amplify the quiet and help you unplug, there is no internet service (bring DVDs for your laptop). New cell phones work, but will drop out.
