Waterfront cottage on Sand Pond in the beautiful western Maine mountains, rustic but newly modernized, fridge and washer new in 2012, all other appliances and water heater new in 2008 or later, fully furnished kitchen, towels and linens provided. As a new owner in 2008 I've made it cozy and welcoming. One step up to cottage, bathroom and master bedroom on first floor, gentle slope and a few stairs to lakefront and dock make it feasible for elder guests. It is small (756 square feet) but sleeps 3-6 adults comfortably. Cathedral ceiling and new Hunter ceiling fan in living room make it feel spacious and airy. Living room with cathedral ceiling, screened in porch, and downstairs bedroom have ceiling fans; 2 upstairs bedrooms and each has a floor fan and cross-ventilation. This is a quiet (except during snowmobile season) winterized camp with a shallow (average depth 13 feet, 23 feet at its deepest point), warm, sandy pond, 40' dock with octagon, across a dead-end dirt road (and snowmobile trail, fun for mountain biking and hiking), so it may not be suitable for toddlers as other camps' residents do use the road. State certified as a Lake Smart house in August 2009, use of eco-friendly products required. Generator installed 2012. The firepit and grill are right on the water, across the dirt road from the cottage. BOATING AND FISHING: the pond is known to be full of large-mouth bass and white and yellow perch, and loons serenade each summer evening. 2-person canoe, 4-person pedal boat, 1 older kayak, 7 life vests provided. No large motorboats are present on the pond, but guests are welcome to bring a kayak, rowboat, or canoe. PLEASURES AT THE CAMP: This is a very rural area, not for those who want constant entertainment, but great for reading on the front porch (completely screened in during April 2009, only first two photos reflect this) overlooking the pond or on the large octagonal dock or sitting in front of the wood stove. There is also a propane heater for the colder months (year-round, insulated cottage). Fire pit and picnic table at the water's edge. Most popular activities: listening for the loons, sunset watching, swimming, boating, and hiking, berry picking, chilling in a porch rocking chair, lobster grilling, gathering with friends around the fire pit after sunset, board games. NEW FOR 2013: land line phone in cottage. Cell phone reception is good on the porch, at least for Verizon and Maine Cellular subscribers: iffy reception for ATT, TMobile, Sprint. HDTV Satellite/high speed internet/WiFi installed June 2009; tv reception cannot be guaranteed during cloudy weather. THINGS TO ENJOY NEARBY: You can quickly find small town life 10 miles away in Farmington and at the University of Maine, shopping, a movie theatre, summer concerts and summer theatre nearby, a couple of interesting restaurants, three independent bookstores, an ice cream stand and a summer farmer's market. 15 minutes to pick strawberries and blueberries in season and buy freshly caught lobster. Half an hour to Mt. Blue State Park, 45 minutes north to scenic Rangeley with brilliant fall foliage and dramatic mountain views (and you may see moose), skiing locally at Titcomb Mountain and it's equidistant from Saddleback, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River. Sand Pond is about 3 1/2 hours from Boston. PRIVATE BUT NOT 'OFF THE GRID': While you cannot see a neighboring camp, noise is amplified over water, so if someone nearby puts 20 people around their fire pit and has a party, you are going to hear it. This does not happen often, it's not a frat party area, mostly owner occupied, but absolute quiet cannot be guaranteed. Also, this is not the last camp on this dead-end road: 7 neighbors farther down the road do use it, so cars, trucks, ATVs, bicycles, people walking or running with their dogs do come right in front of the cottage. A canoe for fishing is always available. Sand pond is a great body of water for those looking to relax, fish, and swim. Everyone is able to swim right off the dock. Welcome to the great escape! This property can best be described as 'in the middle of nowhere, but with all the comforts of home, and then some'. This well appointed log cabin sits 100' back from the shores of Locke Pond in Chesterville Maine. The home has 170' of private frontage, but no nearby lots are developed so you have complete seclusion from the world at this house. If a car drives past the access road to this house, then that could be considered a busy day. This home is ideal for families who love camping, but are not all that fond of sleeping on the ground. There is a tent platform provided, sitting 25' back from the water. This cabin faces west over Locke Pond, providing beautiful sunsets on a regular basis. There is a large dock (20' long) to access the water from, and the swimming area is raked and cleaned annually. The swimming area is sandy and rocky, typical Maine, bring your sandals! The water is about 5' deep at the end of the dock, perfect for diving and cannonballs. There is also a swim float about 100' offshore for your enjoyment. At the shore you'll find a canoe, 2 kayaks all for your use at no extra charge. There are no weeds in the swim area. The house itself is 2800 sq ft with 1200 sq ft of deck space. On the top deck is a 6 man hot tub, patio furniture, outdoor table and porch swing facing west. Make sure you turn off all the lights, jump in the hot tub on a clear dark evening and spend some time stargazing, the skies are incredible! The front deck is covered, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee on those occasional quiet rainy mornings. On the lower deck is a gas grill and built in table area, perfect for watching sunsets and listening to the loons. Most of the interior furniture has been hand built by a local artisan, you'll just fall in love with his work. The kitchen is completely filled with all you'll need to enjoy your week, pots, pans, skillet, coffee maker, toaster, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, ice maker, blender, etc... There are 4 LCD TVs wall mounted throughout the house. Clean sheets and linens are provided as well as a washer and dryer. To be very clear, this house is NOT in a tourist area, this house is a grand escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, that's the beauty of it. If you're not comfortable with being one with nature and need ice cream stands and go-cart racing, then this house is not for you. This house is unique among other rentals, you can't see a neighbor on any side of the house, the only houses visible are across the lake from the shoreline. Worry not, civilization, downtown Farmington, is only 20 minutes away with restaurants, golf, yes, an ice cream stand, a cinema, Walmart, and quaint college shops. Locke pond is generally a very peaceful quiet area, we ask that our guests respect this. The house has been built on the side of a hill, but grades off nicely between the house and the lake, the last few feet to the lake drop off quick, so we've built stairs to access the lake. Also, the driveway is quite steep, you will not be able to get in and out with rear wheel drive, you'll need 4-wheel drive or front-wheel drive to get in and out. You can always just park at the top of the driveway and walk the last 100' to the house. The lake is a quiet gem in central Maine. Locke pond is 1 mile long and .4 miles wide. It is 135 acres total area and 20' at it's deepest. Guests can bring up to a 25-horsepower motorboat, but no larger. There are no jet boats or jet skis on this lake. There is no public launch, so you must be able to carry your boat to launch it. In the autumn, the foliage from the maples is incredible. And since everyone asks, the water is drawn from an well, clean a drinkable. For those who cannot do without, wifi internet is provided. Please note that at one point I had a paddle boat for use by renters, I can no longer maintain it. If you want to rent one I can arrange to have one delivered for $75/week.

Welcome to 'The Mancamp'! This beautiful home boasts 250' of private lakefront on Locke Pond. If you're looking to spend a week just kicking back, relaxing in the hammock, fishing, kayaking, and relaxing in the private hot tub, you've found the right place. This home sleeps 7 and has 2 king sized beds, one full size bed and a full/twin bunk. It currently has one bathroom, but I'm investigating putting in a second. This home boasts a beautiful western view and amazingly dark beautiful night time skies. The decks wrap almost all the way around the house to maximize your outdoor living, with a private 6 man hot tub to the north and a screen porch to the south, all with fantastic views of the lake. The house is on a hill as is seen in the photos, so older legs may have a bit of a hard time and that should be a factor in your consideration of this house. This home comes with everything you need to enjoy your stay, all linens are included and the house is professionally cleaned prior to your arrival. Included in your rental are 3 wall mounted TVs, DirecTV access, xBox and Wii, 2 kayaks, a paddle boat, a swimming area, and swim float, a standalone air conditioner (not central air), WiFi, etc... the only thing not included is my pontoon boat, that can be rented separately for the week. The house has been designed with the views in mind, all rooms that face the lake are wall to wall glass and the well furnished decks maximize these beautiful views. The lake itself, Locke pond in chesterville, is a spring fed pond that’s 135 acres total. It is just under one mile long and ½ mile wide. The frontage has a suitable swim area to the right (north), I rake it out every year to keep it clean and swimmable. The water drops off gradually and a swim float is provided. The substrate is a cross between rock, sand and silt, I’ve always worn sandals when I swim here. The lake is primarily a warm water fishery, the large mouth bass fishing has always been fantastic. Other fish that are common are yellow and white perch, catfish and pickerel. Please note, I offer two types of rentals, 5 night and 7 night, all 5 night rentals are from Sunday evening to Friday evening, and 7 night rentals are Friday – Friday, no exception. I do this to offer a good discount on 5 night rentals, but also to maximize the number of weekends that I get up to use the house. On a personal note, this home has been a labor of love for me, I purchased a small camp 12 years ago and have been adding to it ever since. I’ve fallen in love with the area, the lake, the wildlife, you name it, I love it. It’s a get away from it all for sure, nice and quiet, very very secluded and peaceful. If you’re looking for a quiet rest away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then this is your place. The college town of Farmington is only 15 minutes away, so as secluded as this is, it’s also not far away from all the restaurants, movie theaters, quaint shops, etc… Oh! One other thing, if you’re into cycling, then this is a mecca for you, there are hills everywhere, and if you’re looking for some good challenging rides, then let me know, I’d be happy to share some of the routes I’ve mapped out over the years. Lastly, pets… if your dog is quiet, then he/she is welcome. I’m allergic to cats so I can’t allow them. This home comes with everything you need to enjoy your stay, all linens are included and the house is professionally cleaned prior to your arrival. Included in your rental are 3 wall mounted TVs, DirecTV access, Xbox and Wii, 2 kayaks, a paddle boat, a swimming area, and swim float, a standalone air conditioner (not central air), etc... the only thing not included is my pontoon boat, that can be rented separately for the week. I am willing to rent this house out during the winter time but only to a family that has experience with northern winters and the challenges they bring. Winter time is a remarkably peaceful, renewing, rewarding time in Maine, and if you're knowledgeable about do's and don'ts then it can be wonderful... I will rent the house out for $450/night including snowmobiles or $300/night without snowmobiles, 3 night minimum. If you rent the snowmobiles you will be required to sign a waiver and leave a $1000 security deposit.
