The SpaceThe log cabin part of this house once belonged to Thomas Lord Fairfax, a wealthy British landowner who was granted 6 million acres of land from the King of England and eventually came out to live in the area and use the cabin as his hunting cabin where he would bring his good friends – including young George Washington who had his surveying office in Winchester. This parcel of 140 acres was bought by the McGuinness Family in 1966 and the modern addition was added to the old log cabin in 2002. The old log cabin part of the house has two larger rooms – a dining room and a living room. Each room has a set of staircases leading upstairs to the three bedrooms and one bathroom. There are newer windows in the old log cabin but the fireplace is no longer working. We hope that renting this cabin can help us raise money to fix it. You will need to bring your own sheets and towels. The modern part of the house has a modern kitchen with a fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, dishwasher, toaster oven, and French press. The modern part also has a dining area and a bathroom with a shower. In the back is a large master bathroom that has its own private bath and shower. It is painted in beautiful warm tones, has a large screened deck that overlooks the woods and has ceiling fans in all rooms. The front of the house overlooks a large pond that is stocked with fish and provides a fishing boat. The fish are quick to bit if you use the nightcrawlers sold at the Citgo down the street. If you go over by the dock, there is a nice launching area with a rock beach and nice swimming area. There is also an old barn which is lovely for rustic pictures but too old to go into. There is modern heating and air conditioning in the new addition and in the log cabin. Kitchen supplies: Pretty much everything you need for a basic meal: a great selection of pots and pans, plates, glasses, bowls, silverware and serving bowls. Knives, can openers and cork screws are also there. We attempt to make sure there are am ample supply of cleaning supplies, paper goods, paper towels, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap but we ask each group to attempt to replace anything that you use. There is salt and pepper and sugar and misc spices and oils in the cupboard. No hunting is allowed on the property but there are basic truck paths that lead to lovely hikes around the property. One path takes you over to the road next to the lovely Lake St. Claire. The caretakers of the property are close by and very helpful and quick to respond. Beds – in the old log cabin part of the house, there are three bedrooms upstairs. Two of them have a single bed in each. The third room is like a big loft room and holds three beds. There is also a sofa bed in the log cabin facing the fireplace. The master bedroom in the new part has two singles connected to make a king size bed. There are misc. supplies of bedding. The most charming part that most people enjoy is being able to spend the evening reading or playing games in a room that most museums would make you stand behind a red velvet rope to experience. To be able to sit, relax, read and live in an old log cabin is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. The best part of this cabin is that it is less than 5 miles from a major grocery stores and chain stores. A huge shopping mall is only 10 miles away. Also nearby is a drive-in movie theatre with TWO screens to show movies, a ranch that offers trail rides, and a beautiful Old Town Winchester district with a farmers market and interesting shops and restaurants. A great assortment of historical and artistic museums are nearby as well as civil war historical sights. Interaction with GuestsUnfortunately, I'm usually not around to interact with guests. I live 1.5 hours away. I leave a set of keys at the local gas station for guests to pick up when they arrive.

The SpaceThere are two bedrooms, including a big bedroom in front and a smaller bedroom in back. The house can comfortably sleep 7-8 people. In addition to three big sofas, there are 3 beds, including a Queen and Twin bed (front bedroom) and a Full bed (back bedroom). There are 2.5 baths, all recently renovated, including a half bath downstairs and two full baths upstairs (front bath has a shower; back bath has a tub/shower). The larger front bedroom features a sitting area and a gas fireplace. The smaller back bedroom features access to the back yard. Downstairs in back, the primary living area is spacious and light-filled thanks to an array of south-facing Velux windows. The architect-designed open floor plan encompasses a dining area with ample seating for six; a modern kitchen featuring Miele appliances and a big granite countertop; and a two-story vaulted sitting area with two big sofas for catching up with family/friends. The front room downstairs is cozy and styled more traditionally. There are comfy club chairs and a sofa upholstered in sea-foam velvet. The scale is from another era: Watch your head, people were evidently shorter back in the day. Enjoy the library, but don't let Hegel ruin your weekend! There is a jigsaw puzzle in the works if you're inclined. There's another gas fireplace, let me know if you'd like to turn it on and I'll give you the run-down. There is cable internet (wireless). The walls are thick, but cellular reception is very good, especially if you use Sprint. There is a small TV with a Roku player for streaming. You'll have to supply your own Netflix password, sorry! Sports fanatics seeking a big TV experience are directed just down the street to 50/50 Taphouse. 50/50 has plenty of pixels and the beer selection is great. Although the house is over 200 years old, it is recently renovated and fully updated. The original colonial era windows feature acoustic panels by Indow Window (technology winner out of Portland, OR). The 2-zone heating and cooling system (gas furnace, air conditioning) is controlled by Nest thermostats. If you need help adjusting the temperature, just text or call and I'll walk you through it or make changes remotely. Other energy-saving environment-friendly features include new Kohler toilets and LED bulbs throughout. Guests with special needs: There are several stairways to negotiate, including up to the front door, and the bedrooms are on the second floor. Guest AccessYou may enjoy the entire space, exception of the attic, basement and downstairs utility. The backyard is a work in progress, but feel free to step out...urban oasis coming soon! Interaction with GuestsThe homeowner is available for questions via email or phone/text. The NeighborhoodDowntown Winchester is all about the Loudoun Street walking mall. The mall was recently renovated and has really taken off in recent years. There are a growing number of dining and entertainment options. The Wickham house is walking distance from all of the action. Starting from the house, you're literally about 50 yards from the new 50/50 Taphouse. They have a great selection of beers and unique burgers. If you crave wood-fired pizza, Roma is about halfway up the walking mall. For finer dining, there's the Village Square and eM (off the mall, on Boscawen Street). If you seek culture, there's always something going on at the Bright Box (comedy, music, burlesque). If you're a community theater buff, check out the Winchester Little Theatre, currently in major renovation but the show must go on! It's a longer walk or a very short drive to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, where you can take a tour of the Glen Burnie gardens or check out the exhibits in the Michael Graves-designed museum proper. Nature lovers and runners seeking gravel and green, don't miss the Virginia State Arboretum (Blandy Experimental Farm). It's a 10 minute drive, it's free and worth the short journey. Guests bound for Shenandoah University, it's roughly a mile over to campus. Medical professionals, it's roughly the same distance in the opposite direction over to Winchester Medical Center. Please see the Guidebook for more detailed recommendations! Getting AroundThe downtown area is very walkable and somewhat bike friendly. The City has recently replaced just about all of the sidewalks downtown, and they've done a nice job with street lighting, too, you'll feel safe walking at night most places. Uber is here but just a few drivers. The City runs has a free Trolley, details on their website. Or you can always call for a Polly's cab.

I have a coffee bar inside your room and I provide you a fresh bottle of water along with coffee amenities. Guest AccessI will give you a key when you arrive. Or have one in a lockbox and give you the combo by email. Interaction with GuestsIs this a trick question? Interaction is up to you. I'm friendly and I love my town! If you need interaction and I have the time I'd be happy to interact. However, I work a lot so we may never see each other. The NeighborhoodI love living walking distance to so many bars!! Friday and Saturday night can get a little noisy. I do live in town near a busy intersection but for the most part it's a really nice location and close to everything. This is definitely not a quiet cottage in the woods. Getting AroundI do live near a bus stop but our public transit system is a joke. You need a vehicle to really get around but you certainly could walk to anything downtown. Other Things to NoteI have a westie. He loves people though he is not to keen on dogs. Don't steal his food or he will cut you. That is really his two simple rules in life. I also have a chef boyfriend. His restaurant is named: eM which is right around the corner from my house on 19 E Boscawen St. If you tell them you are Tina's airbnb guests and that I said you get the friends and family rate- they will give you 15% off (food not alcohol). Remind me, I will make sure to let them know your coming in. It's a small place with amazing excellent food. The menu changes daily. You will never see chicken on the menu- but I promise you, it's an experience! (URL HIDDEN)
