The SpaceWe have a lakefront lot with grassy spaces, vegetable and flower gardens, and a tiny boathouse. Our home is located just across a quiet, dead-end street in a mostly owner-occupied neighborhood. It started its life as a camp in the 1940s, complete with a fieldstone fireplace, and has been renovated into a year-round 3-bedroom. You'll have the option of choosing from either of our first-floor guest bedrooms during the confirmation of your reservation. Please see photos for details. You can also rent both bedrooms for a total of four guests at a time (reserve second room by adding two people at $25 each), but if you're staying in only one of the bedrooms, please be assured that we won't rent out the other to someone else until your stay is over! Guest AccessYou'll have access to whichever bedroom/s you reserve, kitchen and dining facilities, and your own full bath. You're also welcome to use the patio, and of course the lake. We have a large flat screen in the library (adjacent to the bedroom with the twin beds), and some DVDs, but there are no cable channels available. Interaction with GuestsThis is up to you and whatever our schedule permits during your stay. If Jan is available and the winds are right, you may even get to sail our 16' Hobie Cat! The NeighborhoodOur street is a quiet dead end on the border of Windham and Falmouth. The homes are primarily owner-occupied, so neighbors are pretty respectful of one another. Motor boats are allowed on the lake, but there's no launch for non-residents, so there aren't too many. Getting AroundWe're located 14 miles from the Portland International Jetport, and 12 miles from Portland's Old Port. A taxi from the airport will run about $40, and Uber can be slightly cheaper. Cars can be rented from or near the airport. If I'm available, I may be able to pick you up from either the airport or the bus station.
If you're driving, we'll send you detailed directions from I95 and you'll have your own parking area once you arrive.
The I95 exit, the nearest grocery store (Hannaford), and the closest gas station are adjacent to one another, 5.5 miles away.
This location is ideal for people with their own transportation or those whose primary goal is to enjoy the lake. If you don't have a car and you're looking to spend most of your time in the city, there are lovely AirBnB locations within walking distance to all things urban! Other Things to Note-- I'm a chef, trained in a variety of circumstances. I learned to cook when my college friends and I started hosting TV nights at our respective apartments. We're all a tad competitive, and the baked ziti was soon a distant memory as we outdid each other in creativity and complexity. For five years, I provisioned local South Pacific and North Atlantic island produce to prepare six meals a day for up to 40 college students and crew aboard an educational tall ship. Now I provision from local Maine farmers and from my own garden to provide fresh, delicious food for our guests, upon request. Fees vary, but we provide options to suit your dietary needs for breakfast and dinner, and we can also supply take-away lunches for your kayaking or hiking adventures. To guarantee availability, please make arrangements for the meals you'd like to enjoy at The Cottage one week prior to arrival. But if you decide after arrival that you'd like to indulge after all, please don't hesitate to ask!
-- Our home is inspired by our travels, primarily to the South Pacific but also across the United States. From the literature on the bookshelves to the carvings and the marine samples, our place reflects who we are. If you want to talk other locales, great writing, or marine science, just ask. Otherwise we'll allow you to enjoy the tranquility of our lakeside home.
-- We will provide you with a brochure of our favorite spots in Portland, in case you'd like to venture into the city. We provide information on food choices for a variety of dietary needs and budgets, as well as tips on where to enjoy great music, art, and festivals throughout the summer.
-- If something isn't to your liking or as you expected, please give us the chance to correct it! Even if I'm not home, feel free to text, and I'll usually be able to get back to you right away. We consider you a guest and therefore want to do everything we can to meet and exceed your expectations.
