The SpaceEsmerelda is a cozy place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and a fantastic stop over on your way through Southern Oregon. Whether you are looking for a unique get-away, wanting an easy stop-over on your drive through, seeking a jump-off base for the adventures Southern Oregon has to offer, or just want to relax in the woods with a good read, this amazing hippie bus is a perfect place to be.
Esmerelda has retired from life on the road. In her hay-day, Esmerelda was a traveling home to many. She's seen a lot in her day. Now, she's happy to be settled down.
This is a peaceful space, where the sounds of nature and country neighbors offer distant companionship. The wood stove will keep you warm on chilly winter nights. The views from the many windows are of surrounding forests and wildlife. Basic kitchen amenities are provided (small fridge, hot plate, toaster oven, sink with cold and hot running water, kettle, dishes, silverware, etc). Organic coffee and an assortment of tea is provided. Enjoy the private, passive-solar heated, outdoor shower (only warm when the sun is shining) while watering the landscape. We provide bio-degradable soap, shampoo and conditioner, clean towels, etc. The toilet is a composting outhouse near the bus, we provide recycling and kitchen compost containers, and proceeds from your visit will fund further permaculture development on the land, so rest assured, your footprint will be small and green while you visit here. Guest AccessThe bus is situated on land shared by a few households, and you are welcome to hike the land, but we ask that you respect the privacy of other residents. Verison and USCellular are the two providers that have signal here. The WiFi reaches the bus, but the signal may be weak inside, both for wifi and for cell reception. The closer you get to the main house, the stronger the wifi signal. Staying for a week or more? You are welcome to use the bath and laundry facilities in the main house. Interaction with GuestsAny interactions will be up to you. We will be on the land during your stay, and available if you need us. If you plan on arriving after dark, just let us know, and we'll leave a light on for you, and start a fire in the woodstove so it's toasty and welcoming when you arrive. The NeighborhoodThe beautiful Rogue River is a short drive away, and rafts can be rented at Galice Resort if you are looking for an adventure. We are about 45 minutes to the Applegate Valley, and some amazing wineries. Ashland is a one hour drive, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Right here on the land is where the We'Moon datebook is produced. The presence of the Muse is palpable! Getting AroundWe are a 30 minute drive to the nearest town of Grants Pass, and about an hour from the Medford airport. Other Things to NoteThere is plenty of room for three to sleep, with a double bed, and a second sleeping space is a fold out chair-cushion/single bed for a third guest. There's also tenting space just outside Esmerelda, for additional "lodging."
Esmerelda is a bus whose ceiling height tops out at about 6', so if you are a tall one, watch your head.
Because the shower is passive solar heated, it's warm only when the sun is shining on the water coils, generally late afternoon into the early evening, in the warmer months.
We have a pretty comprehensive "Welcome" letter with info about the basics, and we have a Green Statement, outlining all the ways that your impact during your stay at Esmerelda is earth friendly.
