House is located up a hill in San Geronimo between Fairfax and Pt Reyes Station --about 5 miles west of downtown Fairfax and 7 miles west of downtown San Rafael. Pt.Reyes Station is a 17 minute drive west of the house. Nearby, You can rent horses in San Geronimo, golf on the golf course ,(which is walking distance), go to the Buddhist meditation center in walking distance (Spirit Rock), hike Roy's Redwood Forest. Also near the house is the Woodacre Country Mart and deli. For finer dining there's the two Birds Cafe in walking distance. For a short hike, About 10 feet from the property is a horse trail, you can walk up it about 300 yards (ten minutes) to Conifer Road-- all beautiful wilderness along this mountain road. At the bottom of my hill is entrance to Willis Evans Canyon, part of the Gary Giacomini Open space Preserve for biking, hiking and horseback riding. About 5 miles east is Fairfax, which has multiple shops and restaurants. I recommend Fradazilio's for excellent Italian or wild local salmon at reasonable price, or for elegant dining in the redwoods, the Deer Park restaurant is the best in Fairfax. Fairfax 's movie house has the awarded best independent multi screen movie house in the USA.
About 12 miles west of the property (17-min drive) is Pt. Reyes Station, which has many restaurants, bookstore, shops, and Cowgirl Creamery, where they make among the world's best organic cheese. Buy some cheese and some crackers and enjoy at their picnic area. From Pt. Reyes Station you can drive out to the Pt. Reyes National Seashore and the lighthouse. Or you can head south to Stinson Beach. Or north up highway 1 to eat fresh Hog Island oysters in Marshall- about 12- 15 minutes north of Pt Reyes. Continue on highway 1 about another half hour to Bodega Bay. Have lunch at the Tides Wharf restaurant on the bay where Hitchcock's The Birds was filmed in the 1950s. There are pictures on the wall of some original film scenes and some narratives.
NOW 5 miles north of the house up Nicasio road, on Wednesday to Sunday night a four star, Michelin star chef (Ron Siegel) formerly of Ritz Carlton, Michael Mina, and French Laundry is cooking for you in the updated Western Room of Rancho Nicasio. About Marin County (especially for foreign visitors)
Located immediately north of the Golden Gate Bridge, which connects San Francisco to Marin, you enter a completely different world. Marin is a natural wonderland.
Points of interest:
Sausalito - bohemian history, spectacular views of San Francisco, touristy restaurants and shops
Tiburon- from the boutique downtown great views of the bay and San Francisco.
Mill Valley - go to the downtown square and have a latte. Just enjoy watching the people.
Muir Woods - experience the giant redwoods. Also nearby is Mt. Tamalpais, the highest point in Marin.
Alpine Lake - wonderful road trip to this lake ; watch for the many bicyclists. You can hike along and up the 30 or so waterfalls that flow into this lake. Although you aren't that far from San Francisco you're in a total mountainous wilderness and you feel 1000 miles away.
Marin county also has the George Lucas (Star Wars creator) estate along Lucas Valley Drive.
West Marin has many organic dairy and horse ranches, and you can see cows grazing the hills by the roads here. Have an organic grass fed steak.
Pt. Reyes Station is a popular destination for restaurants, bookstore, and to visit Cowgirl Creamery. From there go to the Pt. Reyes National Seashore and the lighthouse. If you like fresh oysters head north to Hog Island Oyster by Marshall on Tomales Bay along highway 1. . Enjoy at their picnic area!
Marin Country Mart at Larkspur Landing. Nice shops and restaurants. Work out at 24-hr Fitness. Have organic lunch at Rustic Bakery or an organic grass fed burger or steak at Bel Campo Meat Co. From here you can take a scenic ferry trip right to the Ferry Building on Market Street in San Francisco's Embarcadero.
For shopping centers- in Corte Madera there is the Village and the Town Center. One (Village)is on the east side of freeway 101 and the other (Town Center)is on the west side. Village has a Nordstrom Dept. Store with a excellent restaurant, Blue Stove, offering small plates on the second floor.
Rancho Nicasio - an old style lodge type country restaurant and bar. Sometimes live entertainment and dancing. Their bar menu has excellent nachos. 5 miles north of the house on scenic Nicasio road.
Residents of Marin enjoy excellent schools (families with kids move here for the public schools), people in Marin live longer than anywhere in the USA, crime rates are extremely low, and Marin county has the highest per capita income of any county in California and among the highest in the US.
Organic food is very popular in Marin. Many restaurants offer mostly or entirely organic foods.
Try the Good Earth grocery store in Fairfax-- all organic foods (and I have to say expensive)
My favorite restaurant: Buckeye Roadhouse. Best chicken wings in bar area. Cocktails excellent. Love their smoked beef brisket with mashed potatoes. Excellent desserts too! 15 Shoreline Hwy, Mill Valley. Right by 101 freeway - Stinson Beach exit. Getting AroundThere is bus service (West Marin Stagecoach) a quarter of a mile from the house but I recommend car travel. The house is about 5. 5 miles west of downtown Fairfax and 12 miles east of Pt Reyes Station.
If you wanted to, you could actually walk to Woodacre Country Mart and Deli or to Two Birds restaurant or the San Geronimo Golf course and club house or The Spirit Rock Buddhist center. Other Things to NoteDrip coffee maker and ground coffee in room. If you are not coffee drinkers tell me your preference and I'll try to accommodate. I usually also have orange juice and cream in the fridge.
Guest house is like new built 2014 ; it has one queen bed and a small sofa, also cushion chair, and chair and desk. If you have a third person, the place is roomy enough but there is no extra bed -- they can sleep on the sofa or perhaps bring a sleeping bag and put it on the thick shag area rug. If the sofa or sleeping bag is ok with you, then it's ok with me for a third person. I'll allow two kids and two adults for price of three. You can see the sofa in the pictures. There are extra blankets, pillow and sheets.
Note: after each guest checks out, the sheets are ALWAYS washed with Tide detergent as well as Oxy Clean chlorine-free bleach alternative.
You can check in or out pretty much anytime UNLESS your reservation is affected by someone who was there the night before or a guest is coming the day that you leave... That could affect your check in or out, but check in would not be later than 1 pm in this situation. (You could come at 1 or if you want, later)
