However, we respect their privacy, so our guests determine the amount of interaction we have with them. The NeighborhoodThe short drive up the country road to Shenandoah Mountain Majesty is like a little English lane, flanked by woodland. The mountain views from our rolling property are awesome, with sunsets year round. On cold mornings the blue mountains turn purple (hence our name). Wildlife (deer, turkey, coyote, fox, bear) and birds abound - so perfect! Fields and woods everywhere. The SpaceThis is a one-of-a-kind, architect-designed, energy-efficient, simple yet luxurious home that offers a truly solitary experience in a beautiful setting. The house is filled with books, games, toys, movies, a Steinway piano—everything you'd want for a fun and relaxing getaway. Everything you need, too: air conditioning, laundry room, speedy internet. Outside on our four acres there's a pool, large deck and patios, screen porch, fire bowl with s'mores supplies, grill, archery, slack line, sand table, delicious wild berries, occasional deer sightings, and invigorating walks (if you don't mind hills). For those with architectural inquiries only: The house was designed by Reader & Swartz in Winchester, Va., and yes, we recommend them. Guest AccessYou are welcome to help yourself to any food, drinks, toiletries, and supplies in the house. Interaction with GuestsOur helpful and friendly next-door neighbor manages the property and will check on it weekly. The NeighborhoodThe rolling green hills make the Shenandoah Valley one of the most beautiful areas in the mid-Atlantic. Five minutes away is a farm market with playground, BBQ, and ice cream; 15 minutes away is Strasburg, with antique stores and casual restaurants; 30 minutes away are Winchester, Front Royal, and the famous Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. In the summer there's semi-pro baseball, drive-in movies, and river activities a short drive away. In the fall, the leaves are amazing, and the pick-your-own farms and markets are great fun. Spring is a great time to hike (including on the Appalachian Trail nearby), shop for antiques, and visit wineries (right in our town!) and Civil War historical sites and caverns. We'll give you a comprehensive list of our recommendations for area activities and restaurants. Getting AroundWe are 90 minutes from D.C. and 2 hours from Baltimore. Nearest major airports are Dulles (75 miles), Reagan National (90 miles), and BWI (125 miles). The house has an uphill gravel driveway that is accessible with any vehicle, but you may prefer four-wheel drive. Other Things to NoteThe cleaning fee is $160 for guests who will use the pool. Pool season is roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day. For guests who will not be using the pool, the cleaning fee is $100; $60 will be refunded upon booking. We do not have shades on the windows; being in the woods, they're not needed for privacy. We provide sleep masks if that's a concern for you. Because of the unpredictability of winter road maintenance, the house is not available to rent December through February.

Way back when all of the cooking was done on a wood burning cookstove, the kitchens would become really hot during the summer. The solution was to cook in a separate building, often times the original dwelling on the property and it was called the summer kitchen. One of the original dwellings on Glenmont Farm is an early 1800s vintage log cabin. The cabin has been completely renovated and modernized but without sacrificing any of the warmth, charm and character that can only be found in a real log home. The Old Summer Kitchen has that and more. It is perfect for a couple or a small family with one or two children. The old stone fireplace works and the cabin has central heat and a/c. Enjoy a cup of coffee on the small deck while watching the sun rise over the Massanutten Mountain with the adjacent Little Passage Creek providing soothing background noise. In the evening take a short walk to the top of the hill in the field behind the cabin, spread out a blanket, have a glass of wine and watch the sunset and the moon and stars paint the sky like it only can when its not competing with street lights of suburbia. Hike or bike directly from the property into the George Washington National Forest and access to the hundreds of miles of trails without the inconvenience of driving. We also have accommodations for your horses if you are looking for an upscale opportunity to stay after a long day on the trail. We are convenient to the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area, Signal Knob, Strasburg, Front Royal, Luray and Woodstock. Tour the Vineyards or Luray Caverns, float and fish in the Shenandoah River, shop for antiques and treasures in Strasburg, listen to live music every Sunday afternoon at the Woodstock Cafe, enjoy a great dinner at the historic Mimslyn Inn in Luray or just relax and enjoy the fresh country air. Fort Valley is literally a valley within a Valley. The Massanutten Mountain runs from Harrisonburg, VA to the South to Front Royal, VA to the North. Fort Valley actually sits within the Massanutten Mountain. Surrounded by mountains, this remote paradise can only be accessed by traveling through 3-4 miles of the National Forest. The Old Summer Kitchen is on the 160 acre Glenmont Farm. The farm borders the National Forest so access is direct without leaving the property. If you are looking for a great spot for a week or weekend get away to enjoy the outdoors this place is perfect and you will not be disappointed. Due to the size and limited sleeping accommodations, it is not appropriate for large families or groups. It is located about 20-30 minutes from the nearest grocery store or restaurant so plan accordingly. The house has wifi service and a telephone but cell service is spotty at best.

Fort Valley is literally a Valley within a Valley. Located at the Northern end of the Shenandoah Valley and cradled within the Massanutten Mountain and surrounded by the George Washington National Forest, Fort Valley is one of the most scenic and picturesque areas of Virginia. Perhaps that is why so many people travel from near and far to hike, mountain bike, fish and hunt on the numerous trails, roads, streams and forests. All of which can be accessed from the Slate Hill Schoolhouse without getting in your car. Other houses advertise their proximity to the Forest, we are literally surrounded by it. From the property and through the adjacent Glenmont Farm (see photos of the farm on Facebook), owned by the same family as the Slate Hill Schoolhouse, you have direct access to the Mudhole Gap Trail which connects and provides access to the Signal Knob, Bear Wallow and Massanutten Trails and the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation and Campground. Cyclists love Fort Valley Road, the main road running through the Valley. Many operators feature a trip through Fort Valley as a highlight of their Shenandoah Valley tours. If you like to trail ride, bring your horses and we have stalls and paddocks available for an extra fee. Opportunities for recreation and entertainment are unlimited. Whether its enjoying live music at the Mimslyn Inn in Luray or the Woodstock Cafe and Shoppes in nearby Woodstock, or touring one or all of the numerous vineyards, caverns or Civil War Battlefields, golfing , skiing or simply enjoying the view and the fresh mountain air from the front porch, the location of the Slate Hill Schoolhouse is only outdone by the house itself. Local records show the Slate Hill Schoolhouse started serving the local farming families before the Civil War. The original schoolhouse burned and was rebuilt in 1871. In 1939, the school closed and since then it has expanded to meet the needs of the growing families that called it home. A thorough renovation of the schoolhouse was completed in 2013. It is now tastefully furnished and equipped and the perfect location for a restorative getaway. The three bedroom two bath home creatively retains its historic charm while offering the amenities and conveniences of modern living. The furnishings are a combination of new and re-purposed. The bathrooms have new fixtures and flooring, the bedding is new and the full kitchen is new. The home has a cupola with a school bell that can be rung from inside, a beautiful wrap around front porch, a living room/library, a dining room, a mud room, a bedroom with a double bed and a full bath with tub all on the first floor. The second floor has a loft seating area with sleep loveseat (twin), a bedroom with two twin beds, bedroom with a queen bed and a full bath with shower.

Guest AccessGuests have full access to the house, grounds and river. Interaction with GuestsI am available by phone/text generally. My father (Keith) lives next door and can help if he's home. Other Things to NoteThe pricing does not include bed linens or towels (either bath or river). Bed linens can be rented for an additional fee of $10 per bed per visit (this is our cost to have them laundered). The SpaceThe house dates from early in the last century when the operation of the Burnshire Dam hydroelectric plant, which supplied electricity to the town of Woodstock, required a resident full time caretaker. The heart of the cottage is the country kitchen where the Glenwood coal/wood cook stove is still an imposing presence. And although we love to preserve the past, we know that most of our guests will not have the patience to build a fire in order to brew their morning coffee. Yes, there is a Keurig! (And a selection of coffee and tea.) And a modern electric range, a standard coffee maker, a French press, and a microwave. (There is also a charcoal grill for cooking on the back patio.) The kitchen also has a walk-in pantry with wide shelves made from beautiful native pine. Although it is no longer needed for modern life and seems to call out for neat rows of quart jars of peaches, green beans and tomatoes, the space is starting to fill with books, building a resident library. Stop and browse! If one arrives during chilly weather, a crackling fire will be burning in the living room wood stove. A large alcove off the living room features a romantically cozy love seat, piano and record player. Put on one of the old records to complete the ambience of times gone past. The formal dining room can seat up to six people comfortably. And there are plenty of wine glasses in the cupboard to celebrate an occasion! When you are ready to retire, there are two upstairs bedrooms, one a large master (the Green Room - no pets in this room, please) and the other a small suite (the Magnolia Room) both with double beds and views of the mountains to the east and west. The Magnolia Room also has a sofa in its little sitting room that could provide extra sleeping space for a child or extra guest. There are two bathrooms, one upstairs with a tub, and one downstairs with a shower. The upstairs bathroom is one of the peculiarities of the house as it was apparently intended originally for Hobbits. We have no explanation for it, but all who see it are charmed. For longer stays, take advantage of the laundry room with washer and dryer. But save one or two items to hang on the clothesline out back if it strikes your fancy; there are no dryer sheets anywhere that can match the scent carried by the wind. The front porch, which faces the Alleghenies to the west, is perfect for sipping wine and watching sunsets. You may also catch sight of a hot air balloon hovering on the horizon in the morning or evening, and don't be surprised if a hang glider lands in the field right in front of you! With the guidance of Lee, our writer-in-residence and organic gardening expert, we have been using the same vegetable garden plot where the Burnshires gardened for many years. We are told that people came from all over the County to purchase Virginia Burnshire's beautiful vegetables. We have scaled it back quite a lot from Virginia's very ambitious garden, but still grow enough to enjoy a variety of fresh vegetables in the summer and fall. Guest AccessThe cottage is adjacent to woods, open fields and the river. We have a pleasant loop for walking down to the river and back which is ideal for birding and other nature interests. Please note that we have free-range chickens on the property and if you bring a dog, it must be on a leash at all times when outside. Interaction with GuestsMichael and I live right next door and are available whenever you need information or assistance. The NeighborhoodOur bend of the Shenandoah is a joyful and peaceful place to live or visit. Activities of interest in the area include hiking in the nearby George Washington National Forest (you can walk to it!), antiquing, flea marketing, artisan shopping, cafes, civil war sites and reenactments (Battle of New Market in the the spring and Battle of Cedar Creek in the fall), wineries, caverns, canoeing, scenic back roads and byways, hang gliding, hot air ballooning, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in the summer, and stars at night! And don't forget a trip to the Woodstock Tower which is at the top of the mountain behind the cottage. From that vantage point you can see the famous seven bends of the Shenandoah River, weather permitting. Getting AroundThis is a rural area and you must have a car to get around. The town of Woodstock, where you will find shops, cafes, restaurants and even a movie theater, is less than ten minutes away. We do, upon request, occasionally provide rides to the top of the mountain for hang glider pilots. An amazing circumstance of our location is that you can begin your journey on I-66 inside the Beltway in Washington DC and arrive at the cottage without encountering a single stop light! (Hint: If you are coming south on I-81, get off at the Toms Brook Exit and continue south on Route 11 to Woodstock.) Other Things to NoteThe restoration of the Burnshire Dam has been ongoing for several years. The turbines deep under the Shenandoah River will soon be quietly generating electricity again much as they did when caretaker Bill Burnshire tended the dam until the early 1950's. Access is limited without express permission of the owner. Please respect the "no trespassing" signs that are posted around the dam infrastructure. When the project is complete, tours will be available with advance notice.

The SpaceThe pond is for swimming and fishing as well as charm. It is only 6 feet deep at its lowest point (near the center) so can be warm in the hottest weather. Beyond a narrow strip of sand the bottom is muddy, so swim shoes are recommended. Floats and fishing poles are in the basement near the double doors. I am not a fisherman, so equipment is rudimentary, but there are a couple poles with line, and nearby convenience stores have bait. Crossover bike (helmet, basket, air pump) in basement. Guest AccessYou may use the whole house, though the office is not particularly welcoming. (If the wifi fails, though, this is the place to go. Instructions in the small guidebook on side hall table and to right of desk.) Interaction with GuestsCall or text any time. The NeighborhoodKids will enjoy the small "farm" (walking distance, left out of the driveway) to see the animals: pigs, goats, cow, many chickens. (Directions in paper guidebook at the house and on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps). Other Things to NoteCharcoal grill and fixings on veranda. Kayaks stored under porch.
