Charlottesville, Washington DC, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, Hersey Park, and whitewater rafting in Harpers Ferry are all within driving distance for an easy day trip, as well as historical Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, which can be reached in approximately a 3-hour drive. There are also 2 ski resorts within fairly close proximity - Massnutten is about 55 minutes away and Bryce ski area can be accessed in 35 minutes.
