Walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the flowers and the differnt syles of backyard landscaping Notice the variations of docks construction and nautical decorations. Enjoy a lakefront casual restraunt with indoor and outdoor dining. Getting AroundHoliday Shores is a rural area. Most errands will require driving. Locally there is a small general store with ice and fuel. Also a video rental and two more restraunts with bars. Ten miles away the town of Edwardsville has entertainment venues and shopping for just about anything one needs. Other Things to NoteWe have two toy poodles. They will notify us of your arrival by antimated barking. They have never bitten anyone and we consider them entertaining. We do try to make them behave. If they bother anyone we confine them to our room.

The SpaceHIKING TRAILS There are 212 acres available for exploring. The entire perimeter has some form of fencing (some chain link and some barbed wire). There are a few interior chain link fences as well. You are welcomed to explore the entire property except for the outbuildings. There are a few wooded trails that are maintained annually. HILLTOP VIEW There are horses in the pastures in front and behind the cottages. VINEYARD The vineyard is approximately 14 acres planted in 2007. There are 74 600' rows. We have 6 varieties of grapes: Norton, Chambourcin, Marechal Foch, Vignole, Cayuga and Traminette. LAKE Our 24 acre lake was reclaimed in the 80’s. The lake averages 5’ deep - if you fall in, STAND UP! Cabin guests may fish, CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY. We have crappie, bass, catfish and bluegill. FOWL, FUR and SHELL We host a lot more than humans at Shale Lake! You may see a Grey Heron soaring in for the night and occasionally a white one, too. We have Swans and White Northern Pelicans stopping almost every year. We also have at least 3 Barred Owls, a pair of Red Tail Hawks and a mating pair of Bald Eagles that winter in the north woods. We have more than our share of turtles including some snapping turtles the size of a tire! If you find one hibernating in a creek, best to leave it alone! WOODED BOUNTY We have some unusual plants and trees. The old coal mine employed as many as 700 people. There were buildings in and around the woods. The buildings are gone but you will find cactus thriving in the shale dust and a huge bed of iris blooms (planted by office ladies). We have a yucca grove, pecan & walnut trees, plus apple and persimmon trees. The old metal stove was not grown but rather thrown here by locals using the property as a dump. There is a lot of really cool, really old stuff. Please feel free to explore and take any trash…ehh..treasures with you! Guest AccessGuests to Shale Lake are welcome to explore our 211 acres. Hike the trails through the woods, fish the lake (catch-and-release only), enjoy the sunsets (or sunrise) from a porch or build a fire and watch the stars at night. Choose the Cabin or Cottage that fits your relaxation needs the best - hilltop open porch with great views or lakeside screened-in porch nestled near the woods. And, of course, The Winery at Shale Lake is a great place to visit on weekends (Fri-Sun) for your food, drink and relaxation needs. Interaction with GuestsShale Lake is family owned and operated. The owners live on-site and are available for guests needs by phone, email and text. The NeighborhoodShale Lake is located on 211 acres of the former Mt.
