The B.F. Hiestand House is an elegant High Queen Anne style Victorian home conveniently located in the Historic Rivertowne of Marietta along the Susquehanna River. From this location it is a short trip to Hershey, Historic Lancaster City, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Wineries, Outlets, the Historic Rivertownes of Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville, and many other local attractions and sights. The gracious Inn was designed by local architect C. Emlen Urban, and built in 1887 as the home of B. Frank Hiestand, a well known lumber mill owner of his time, and his family. The house is on the Historic Registry of homes. The first floor features a rare american chestnut foyer and staircase. Two parlors with pocket doors and fireplaces are great places to unwind with a good book or viewing a DVD on the large screen TV. In the formal dining room, the mahogany wainscoting and coiffered ceiling are magnificent. Freehand stenciling enhances the triple stained glass windows. Afternoon refreshments and a full breakfast will be served in this cheerful room. The SpaceThe room is about 17' by 17'. The front door opens directly onto the sidewalk. It is cozy and comfy. The bathroom is little but has it all. I use no scented products for cleaning, washing the bedding or dusting. I will leave a bar of unscented goat's milk soap for each guest to use or to take home. There are many small bottles of shampoo, lotion, conditioner and body wash for the choosing. The pillow on top of the sleeper sofa chest becomes the twin floor mattress. The sofa can also be used for sleeping. I have a twin air mattress should you have even more sleepers. Complimentary water, tea, ceramic mugs, plastic utensils, napkins, and sweeteners are in the closet. There is a microwave and the refrigerator has a freezer compartment with ice cube trays. Guests are welcome to come into the garden to spend some time. Guest AccessYou will only be able to use the front room. Rest of house is private. Interaction with GuestsI can be reached at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or cell/text (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). My surrogate host is Pam Wolf. I will give you her number in the event that I am not home when you arrive. The NeighborhoodThere are beautifully maintained historic houses throughout town. The Vesta Museum, which is open Sundays in the summer from 1-3pm, is the place to see if you like learning about early industrial stuff. They also can tell you about the big lumber and canal industries which put Marietta on the map in the 19th century. Tours can also be arranged at the Town Hall which houses tons of Marietta history. Contact me for more info. The town is only a little over a mile long and skinny. Easily walkable. Each year the town hosts many events: A bike race, Chique's Challenge, (bike, run, kayak race), The Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes, always the first Sunday in December, and the Community House Fall Garden Tour, to mention a few. You will be on the Northwest River Trail which heads three miles south to Columbia and 15 miles north to Bainbridge. Bike, kayak, tube, hike, walk, drive, rock climb, or just sleep and eat. Speaking of eating, these restaurants are out my door and to your right and all within a mile. A number of them have music in the evenings. Check with them for times and nights. Shank's has a dart board. They all participate in the spring and fall Pub Crawl. Stanley's, one-half block away, serves breakfast on weekends starting at 9am. Kid friendly. Pig Iron Brewery, pub fare and steaks, etc., etc., seems to attract bikers. Shank's Tavern: A place where everybody knows your name. Excellent burgers and interesting menu. Kid friendly. Not open Saturdays because Bob Shank does not like drunks... McCleary's Pub: Irish Pub. Great all the time but I especially like it on rainy days. Has more seating than previous places but you should get a reservation for evening meals. Railroad House Inn and Restaurant: Elegant dining and a bar with less expensive fare. Large basement bar is open on weekends. Must see: very long copper bar. Go on up to Market and turn left to go to Nick's Bistro: Started out as a sports bar and has a multitude of big screen TVs but is usually quiet. Has some very interesting items on it's menu. The home-made chips are excellent. The Sheetz and Rutter's Farm Store are around the corner on Rt. 441. Across 441 is a Chinese, Italian, and Subway. Many, many more places to eat in Mt. Joy, Columbia, Wrightsville and all over Lancaster County. Getting AroundAbout 4 miles south on Rt. 441 and just over route 30 there is a tourist bureau (turn left at the Turkey Hill Experience) for more information than you can shake a stick at. There is an Amtrack Train Station hidden in the woods in Mount Joy-about 10 minutes from here. Waiting for the train is an experience... There is a public bus stop just up on the corner of Bank and Market which takes you to downtown Lancaster in about an hour. The Northwest River Trail runs north and south in front of my house; south to Columbia through a tunnel and along the tracks, where it stops at the brand new information building run by the Susquehanna Rivertowns Association (comprised of Marietta, Columbia, and Wrightsville). North, the trail goes 15 miles or so to a public park w/boat launch, picnic pavilion, and fishing (also accessible by car). Historic areas and ice cream are 5-10 miles beyond that. There is a great Amish fruit/vegetable stand about 3 miles out Route 23 (Market Street extended). Chiques Rock Outfitters rents bikes and offers guided kayak and tubing tours. The actual Chiques rock, which is on the NW River Trail, is a very busy spot for rock climbers. It's fun to walk down and watch or climb. There is almost always some group or other up the rock. Other Things to NoteWifi code will be in the room along with some other information about your stay.
