The SpaceThe Guest Houses: Suwanosejima guest house has two buildings each built completely from wood by hand with a simple rustic design. They are almost identical except one has a complete kitchen and the other just a refrigerator and microwave. Both are complete with washrooms and private toilets. A separate structure contains a modern shower. In total there are 6 twin beds each with a futon, comforter, and sheets. Side House _ Toilet/ Washroom/ ~ 18 sq meters, 196 sq feet, 4 beds Kitchen House_ Toilet/Washroom/ ~12 sq meters, 130 sq feet, 2 beds Guest AccessShared equipment: Kitchen - fully equipped modern kitchen with cookware and seasonings. Shower room - soap and shampoo supplied Washing machine - fully automatic washing machine, free Wifi - free Interaction with Guests(English is very difficult for us, but we will do our best! Using (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) translate can help but please understand if there are small communication errors!) I am not free everyday but I can always help you find anything you need on the island. There are lots of activities we can do and I will happily share some of them for an extra fee: Mother of Pearl Accessories: Using pieces of great green turban shells we can make shiny mother of pearl accessories including necklaces, chopstick rests etc. Bamboo Charcoal Making: The native bamboo plant can be made into charcoal in a homemade drum kiln. It takes two days to make so make sure to let me know and to make time in your schedule if you want to try this. Bamboo Flute Making; Using the bamboo we can make a pleasant sounding rustic flute with a very good tone. Trekking - We can go climbing on the hillside of the volcano Mitake. Up to 2 km to the crater, any closer is off limits. Accessory making: 2 hours, each 1000 yen Bamboo Flute making: 2 hours, each 1000 yen Trekking: 4 hours, each person 5000 yen Please let me know in advance if you would like to do any of these activities. Looking forward! The NeighborhoodWelcome! The suwanose guest house is located on Suwanosejima, an island located between Kagoshima and Amami Oshima. The island is surrounded by a coral reef with colorful fish and in the center stands the active volcano Mitake. The small village is covered in bamboo and in the spring season we prepare the young bamboo shoots a special treat. The island is full of nature and covered with dynamic volcanic rock. If you have a moment please come, the suwanosejima guest house waits for everyone. Getting AroundThe ferry from Kagoshima arrives in the morning around 8 AM and I will be at the port to pick you up! It is not a far walk but definitely an easy drive. For the ferry to leave I will of course give you a ride. Other Things to NoteOn Suwanosejima there are no shops or restaurants. There are two vending machines and an inn that sells beer. You can either bring food (we will provide basic spices and oil) or let us know in advance and we can purchase them for you (vegetables, noodles, local seafood). There are always fresh chicken eggs available (each 30 yen). There is no ATM on the island so please be prepared with the proper cash. Also please note that in times of bad weather your stay might need to be extended as the ferry might be canceled. Getting to Suwanosejima can seem a bit complex, but actually its only a ferry ride away from Kagoshima. And to and from Kagoshima from other major cities is cheaply accessed through budget airlines like Peach, Jetstar, and Skymark. The Tokara ferry line runs 3 times a week from Kagoshima to Amami Oshima and returns stopping at most of the Tokara islands each direction. The journey from Kagoshima begins at 11:00 pm and takes about 9 hours with Suwanosejima at the third stop at 8:00 am. The ferry costs 7000 yen one way from Kagoshima to Suwanosejima and for that price you are provided with a very nice futon in order to sleep the night peacefully. For an upgrade you can also have a more private room with bunk beds. Seasickness on these ferries is not so common as they are quite large and the rocking is not extreme, and usually the common rooms are quiet and an easy place to sleep. If you are coming from Kagoshima the port is easily accessed though finding out where to buy the tickets might seem complicated. The ferry departure dates change every month although the departure and arrival times have stayed the same for the past ten years. (I've included the arrival and departure times in the photo collection). Each month the Toshima Ferry updates the schedule however it is in Japanese only. I will do my best to help translate but please know it is complicated!
