The SpaceOur house is one of the oldest in Yarraville - a historic stone-built former corner-store. You'll have your own access to a cosy, quiet, slate-floored room overlooking the back verandah & garden, with rugs, comfy seating, shelving, hanging space, & a VERY comfy luxury king single bed (extra wide, extra long!) with good linen. You have views both ways to little gardens, so with a vintage feel & 'bird-theme' art, the room has a restful & charming air.
There is a heater for those cooler days, & a small fan for summer. There is a mini-fridge with fresh milk, as well as a tray with kettle, coffee plunger and pretty tea set for those welcoming cuppas! A light cold breakfast can also be provided (muesli/cereal & fresh fruit). And in summer, there are fresh plums & lemons from the garden.
There is also your own big, bright bathroom with toilet, basin, large deep bath & over-bath shower, plus all essentials (towels etc) & a few little luxuries so you can pamper yourself during your stay!
Your room has a big bookshelf inside and in the corridor outside, with a varied range of books - borrow one & relax on the verandah, (or if you would like to strum on a ukulele or guitar, we can lend you one !)
Plus...... Guest AccessFrench doors lead from your room to your own wicker lounge area under the grapevine-covered back verandah (where you may meet our friendly resident Possum sampling some leaf buds or drinking at the bird bath!). There is also separate access from your room to another tiny, sun-filled, private courtyard with table & chairs (& clothes-line) - perfect for breakfast!
The rest of the house is private.
For those staying a couple of days, let us know if we can pop things into our washing machine, for you to air-dry in the sunshine (we have no dryer!). There are no cooking facilities, but hey, you're on holiday & surrounded by great local cafes, restaurants & nearby Footscray's delicious cheap-eats, so why cook?! And there's a great little cafe just over the road so you can almost fall out of bed & get your coffee fix! Interaction with GuestsWe'll be there to welcome you, have a cup of tea, & show you round, so you feel at home. We are also happy to give you ideas to make the most of your stay in groovy Yarraville & Melbourne - I've lived in the area for 25 years, so know its many delights well!
We are relaxed & sociable, & enjoy a chat, but know people value their privacy, so make yourself at home knowing you won't be interrupted. We are in & out most days so we'll be there or close by if you need us :)
We are former Professional people, now performing musicians, so we are always keen to welcome other musicians, & maybe have a jam, or tune you in to the many musical, (as well as creative and culinary) delights of cosmopolitan Melbourne!
NB. Rehearsals are only occasionally at our place, are not loud or late & and are 4 rooms away from your room, so you won't even hear us!
Having travelled a lot myself, I'm particularly welcoming & sympathetic to women travelling alone, & older travellers.
Aussi, je parle Francais assez bien pour un vacance et parler de tout et de rien (est-ce que c'est vrai?); ed io parlo Italiano solamente un piccolo po (sfortunatamente!), & am generally a good communicator! The NeighborhoodTHE NEIGHBOURHOOD: We are in a GREAT location in the heart of Yarraville, an attractive, older & now very trendy area with a 'village' feel, lots of interesting shops, bustling cafes, & the beautifully restored Art Deco Sun Cinema. It is a very safe, intimate and friendly place - a community where people know each other, so it won't take long for you to feel at home!
"The suburb is renowned in Melbourne for its unique character, architecture and quality of village life." (Wikipedia)
We are close walking distance to the Yarra River with its views of the city sky-line & ever-changing parade of ships, tugs, ferries & pleasure craft, & you can sometimes hear the lovely sound of the deep ships horns from our house! You can walk to Scienceworks museum, & the punt over the Yarra to Port Melbourne, where the ferry to Melbourne Southbank also stops.
NEARBY (5 mins) is the historic seaport of WILLIAMSTOWN (with beach, marina, sea planes, bay cruises & ferries to Melbourne); SEDDON's retro vibe, & busy multi-cultural FOOTSCRAY filled with Vietnamese, Indian & African cheap-eats, & the fantastic Footscray Market (fresh food).
Melbourne CITY is only 7kms/10 minutes by car/4-5 train stops away. It is compact and easy to walk around but the city-centre also has free trams to a range of classic sights. Getting AroundThe train & bus station are less than 10 mins easy walk from our house, taking you into the City in 15 minutes (a little longer at peak times). Train/trams use MYKI cards - you buy one then just top it up with cash at the station (they operate like credit cards) & away you go! Trains run from early morning to past midnight so it's simple to get around.
We are also very close to the Westgate Bridge/freeway, giving easy access by car in all directions WITHOUT having to go through the city, including:
* Melbourne Tullamarine AIRPORT (20 mins) - use taxi, Uber or Skybus
* 10-15 mins to: GRAND PRIX, FLEMINGTON Racecourse, Melbourne SHOWGROUNDS, DOCKLANDS & the Melbourne Eye, Etihad STADIUM, National GALLERY/ ARTS CENTRE/FED. SQUARE, Queen Victoria MARKET, Melbourne ZOO
* Avalon AIR SHOW (30 mins)
* or further afield such as a little over 1 hr to the start of The GREAT OCEAN ROAD, Healesville ANIMAL SANCTUARY or SOVEREIGN HILL historic gold-field re-creation at Ballarat. Other Things to NoteThis is our home & we love it - everyone who comes says 'Wow!' at the high-ceilings & exposed stone space with its quirky artworks & bohemian style! But characterful old buildings rarely look straight, level or squeaky- clean! And like many creative people, we are not 'minimalist' or hotel-like, so expect a homely space full of colour & interesting objects!
We also have a friendly little dog, who is getting a bit old, & struggles to hear & see, but will give you a warm welcome & enjoy a pat. He's a darling but of course it means that our garden is 'dog friendly' (code for not looking entirely Royal Chelsea Flower Show!)
Your entrance will be via our lockable back gate, and lockable back door right by your room, so you can come and go independently without disturbing us. (You have the back of the house, we have the front)
Your bedroom/bathroom is well curtained off from the back corridor to the garden, which is only occasionally used from about midday to mid-evening to access the shed & laundry. However your bedroom/ensuite is ALWAYS strictly your space unless you ask us in/ask us to attend to something.
There is plenty of 24hr free on-street parking
