5 Amazing Places to Visit in Turkey

← Back to ‘Discover the Best Things to Do, Everywhere`

One of the most incredible things about Turkey is the sheer diversity in its landscaping. From its Aegean beaches to the eastern mountains, travelers will be easily swept away into the magic of the country. Here are five our our top choices for the most amazing places to visit in Turkey:

Cappadocia

Known for its picturesque hot air balloon rides, Cappadocia is filled with “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations. Looking for a beyond-gorgeous place to stay? We recommend the Museum Hotel (we dare you to click that link and not immediately fall in love).

Lake Van

The largest lake in Turkey, Lake Van is home to breathtaking landscape views. We recommend taking a boat trip in the area and then staying around for the sunset. A cool little piece of trivia is that Armenian chroniclers wrote about vishaps (a dragon in Armenian mythology) living in Lake Van. Move over Loch Ness, you’re not the only big sea creature in a lake.

The Underground City of Derinkuyu

An ancient multi-level underground city of the Media Empire, Derinkuyu is a must-visit. The city stretches an astonishing nine stories underground, and we recommend making the use of a guide to optimize your visit.

Pamukkale

Thermal pools that look like they were plucked out of a fairytale landscape, Pamukkale gives visitors an experience that is one of Turkey’s most astonishing offerings. Pamukkale is something you must experience to understand — it will seem as if you’ve stepped onto another planet altogether.

Hagia Sofia

Created by the East Roman Empire in Istanbul, the Hagia Sofia has been constructed three times in the same location. It was used as a church for 916 years, but, following the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmed, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque. Afterward, it was used as a mosque for 482 years. Under the order of Atatürk and the decision of the Council of Ministers, Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1935, which you can visit today.
