When you think of 420-friendly vacation destinations, Jamaica and Amsterdam are bound to come to mind. These are great options for happy 420 getaways, but don’t limit yourself to these mainstream marijuana trips. Choose any of these five weed-friendly cities where marijuana is legal and you can relax by the beach, wonder in awe at the northern lights, view a city from great heights, and more.
1. Denver, Colorado
Celebrate 420 in the U.S. city with the strongest weed tourism and explore the state that boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Denver has taken the lead as a stoner’s destination pick since the legalization of weed in 2012, which means the city features open-weed bars, marijuana grow-schools, and even ganja yoga retreats. Cannabis culture encourages you to appreciate Denver’s mountainous surroundings and try out unique strains such as Girl Scout Cookies and Super Lemon Haze. Get out of the city and sand sled on Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes to make a unique experience during your chill time in Colorado.
2. Seattle, Washington
Though you can’t grow your own weed in this hazy city, buying weed in Seattle is entirely legal, and the coffee, nature, and sights make it worth the trip for any pot smoker. Seattle is known for incredible coffee quality, with an abundance of coffee houses throughout the city and plenty of marijuana dispensaries. In cannabis stores such as Ganja Goddess and Herban Legends, you can find a variety of strains as well as edibles and concentrates. Seattle also hosts Hempfest, the world’s largest festival for the decriminalization of marijuana. Explore Seattle’s lush, green nature on your buzz, or smoke up and go to the top of the Space Needle for an amazing view, way up high.
3. Montevideo, Uruguay
Uruguay is the only country where recreational cannabis is fully legalized, and it’s been that way since 2014. As a non-citizen you can’t legally buy it – but you can consume it. Luckily, the friendly Montevideo locals are usually down to smoke you up, so you can taste the salty breeze as you chill out on white beach sands. Get to know Montevideo’s artsy side and bohemian vibe, through the art scene, architecture, and colonial houses. Savor the flavors at a local steakhouse and gaze at spectacular city views, strolling on the waterfront promenade.
4. Anchorage, Alaska
In Anchorage, Alaska, also known as the City of Lights and Flowers, locals have been legally allowed to grow pot at home since 1975. This makes for a 420-friendly atmosphere throughout the city as well as some expert growers. The summer’s long hours of sunshine provide a good party atmosphere on your trip, or stay in the winter and be awed by the incredible Aurora Borealis lights. Reach your preferred state of high relaxation at any of Anchorage’s cannabis cafe’s, a.k.a. “coffee shops”, where on-site pot consumption is completely legal.
5. Tenerife, Spain
The Spanish island of Tenerife boasts around 50 Cannabis Social Clubs (CSC) where you can go to get high. However, tourists may encounter difficulties entering a CSC as Tenerife’s laws around marijuana possession and consumption are in somewhat of a legal gray area. The best thing to do is to go with a local to avoid any issues and smoke all the cannabis, Moroccan hash, and local concentrates your heart desires. Find your favorite strain to smoke on the golden beaches of this volcanic island.
