So Christmas is over and you’re already dreaming of a perfect getaway in December — well now is the time to start planning! Whether you’re looking for a traditional Christmas vacation or know you’ll be in desperate need of some winter sun, here’s a great selection of Christmas getaway ideas. The further in advance you book, the lower the prices — as the saying goes, ‘the early bird catches the worm’.
Staying in the US
New York City
If your kids are a bit older, New York City is one of the best places for a Christmas getaway. You’ll see your kids’ eyes wide in awe at the stunning city lights, larger-than-life skyscrapers, and magic December atmosphere. Along with the traditional sightseeing options the Big Apple has to offer, there are also German-style Christmas markets, giant ice skating rinks, and twinkling Christmas lights at every turn. You might even see a sprinkling of snow if you’re lucky!
Chicago
From giant Christmas trees to German-style winter markets and Christmas light ceremonies, there’s something really special about Chicago in the winter. Chicago and the surrounding area is home to over ten Christmas light ceremonies, where you can see the lights officially be switched on, and marvel at incredible illuminating displays made from millions of bulbs. If that hasn’t tempted you, Chicago is also home to the largest German Christmas market outside of Germany! You’ll find stalls selling traditional German glühwein (hot mulled wine), giant pretzels, and chocolates, alongside rides, an ice rink, and the chance to meet Santa. The market is also a great place to pick up hand-crafted gifts.
Hawaii
Christmas vacation in Hawaii? Why not! If you’re looking for some winter sun, without the culture shock of being in a different country, head west to the incredible island of Hawaii. From stunning beaches to tropical flora and fauna, fun activities such as zip lining and horse riding, there will be loads to keep you and the kids entertained. Vacations in Hawaii can get very expensive in December — now is the time to book and get a great deal.
Colorado
For a white Christmas, take the family skiing in the stunning Colorado mountains. From quaint ski towns to cozy chalets and twinkling lights against a snowy backdrop, you’ll feel like you’re in a truly magical winter experience. Celebrate a Victorian-style Christmas at the Breckenridge ski resort, or head to Denver to experience some of the city’s top winter activities, such as seeing the Christmas lights at Denver Zoo.
Going Abroad
Iceland
If you’re looking for a winter mini-break abroad, what about heading to Iceland? It’s just a 5 hour 40-minute flight from New York to Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, and you can find cheap flights with budget airlines such as WOW and Norwegian Air. Iceland is one of the most popular winter holiday destinations in Europe. With almost-guaranteed snowfall, the chance to see the epic northern lights, and the opportunity to sit beneath the stars in natural thermal hot springs, there so many amazing things to do in Iceland.
Mexico
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for some winter sun, head down south to Mexico, where you’ll find incredible beaches, mouthwatering food, and a rich, historical culture. There are so many places to visit in Mexico, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the best places to head for winter sun are the Yucatan peninsula, with warm Caribbean waters, tropical islands, and colonial towns; or the Pacific coast, with Puerto Escondido or Puerto Vallarta being some of the best spots to kick back on the beach. Get ready to relax with a margarita, while the kids splash around in the pool or the sea. There are plenty of all-inclusive family resort in Mexico if you want to skip planning all the details.
Canada
If you want to spend the holidays relaxing, why not book a charming cabin in Canada? Is there anything more cozy than snuggling up by a fire, cooking a hearty meal, or having roasted marshmallows by a fire pit? Unwind and watch some of your family’s favorite TV shows and get completely off-the-grid while being surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forest. There are so many amazing cozy cabins to rent in Canada but be sure to book well ahead of December to get one of the best. Canada’s cities such as Toronto and Quebec City also look like winter wonderlands during the festive period, with almost-guaranteed snowfall, twinkling lights and tons of Christmas activities.
