If you’ve ever been to Palm Springs, you’ll know that one of the first feelings you have on arrival is: “I want to un-robe.” The desert heat is truly oppressive, but thankfully the city has built its fair share of comfortable resorts to cool off. What’s more, many of these are clothing-optional. Think lounge chairs by the pool, big jacuzzis, massage and spa services, social hours, and great views — all enjoyed in the buff. Here’s a quick rundown of clothing-optional spots Palm Springs hotspots.
Centrally located in the heart of Palm Springs, within walking distance of great restaurants and fun nightlife, Tortuga del Sol has the best location on this list. Gay-owned and operated, this spot is recognized as a “men’s resort,” and it’s been winning awards in the category for years. Amenities include a large BBQ area, lounge chairs where you can sprawl under the desert sun, bathrobes (essential), a poolside misting system, and a jacuzzi. Also, it’s pet-friendly! A maximum of two, small to medium, well-behaved dogs are allowed per guest.
This year the Terra Cotta won the Desert Sun award for the best boutique hotel of 100 rooms or less. As the newest clothing-optional spot in Coachella Valley (just 1.5 years old), the Terra Cotta is making a name for itself in an industry with plenty of competition. All rooms here have king-sized beds, while there’s also a renovated saltwater pool and a brand new saltwater jacuzzi, a host of spa services, free breakfast, early check-in, and late check-out — they know how to please. With tons of blow-out events like Super Bowl parties, Cinco de Mayo, and Labor Day, Terra Cotta should definitely be considered for a fun nudist getaway. The Desert Sun Resort is a Mediterranean style resort that is considered one of California’s Top Nudist Resorts. It’s certainly one of the largest, with several acres of well-maintained property in a secluded area. Amenities here have given the Desert Sun the highest number of repeat visitors in the industry. Three pools, two heated Whirlpool spas, a tennis court, a full spa, a restaurant, and two newly designed lounge areas are all available. The USA Today has described the Desert Sun as the “jewel in the crown of nudist resorts.” If you’re just looking to stop by for the day and not stay overnight, day passes start out at $50. They also offer annual memberships for unlimited access if you live locally.
Living Waters has been ranked one of the top clothing-optional resorts in the world and has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times. Living Waters took the mineral water of Palm Springs and combined it with the amenities of a plush, European-style resort. The poolside massages are top-class, the views are excellent, and apparently, the lunch buffet is not to be missed. The vibe here is quiet, meditative, and relaxing. If nothing else, Living Waters is a great place with an inclusive environment where you can fully appreciate their motto: “life assumes nudity”.
Escape is an LGBT-friendly resort that caters to the thriving gay communities in Palm Springs and Southern California. It’s been around since the 1950s and it tends to pull a predominantly younger crowd with a mixture of couples and singles. The 24-hour pool is cooled in the summertime (a necessity in Palm Springs) and warmed in the winter. Escape also offers a continental breakfast, a clubhouse lounge area, a movie room, and a 15-person hot tub. For tips on how to have a great gaycation, check out the Palm Springs LGBT vacation guide.
The Hacienda at Warm Sands is by far the most luxurious resort on this list. Also catering mostly to a mostly gay crowd (although everyone is welcome), the Hacienda boasts Spanish colonial vibes, some splashes of Native American decór, and in general a very pleasant desert experience. There are two swimming pools, lavish suites with private patios, and pampering guest services. Because the Hacienda is closed for day use, it feels more exclusive and intimate.
