Located in the heart of Rockingham County on the banks of the Great Bay Reserve is the unassuming town of Greenland, NH. Sandwiched between the White Mountains, the coast, I-95, and Boston, Greenland is a vibrant community with a small-town feel that makes for a great getaway from the hustle of east coast cities. Here’s a quick rundown on the best things to do in Greenland, NH.
In 2000, this picturesque, 170-acre patch of farmland was converted into a top-flight golf course. The 71-par course is widely regarded as one of the best maintained in the state, and with tons of character too. The course winds through immaculate fairways, pristine greens, daunting sand traps, and more. It’s considered moderately difficult, and the price is very reasonable starting at around $20 for 18 holes. If you’re not quite ready to take your skills to the course, the practice facility will entertain you enough. Breakfast Hill boasts a driving range with seven targets, and a 9,000 square foot putting green. Feel free to visit the clubhouse as well for events, parties, or simply a good meal.
One of the best parts about Greenland is it sits on the banks of the Great Bay Estuary, the state’s largest reserved research area and home to a complex system of wildlife and ecosystems. The Discovery Center and conservation effort began in the 1970’s when a proposition to build an oil refinery was overwhelmingly defeated by the public. Since then, the Great Bay has stood as an example of the region’s continued dedication to environmental stewardship. Here, you’ll find interpretive exhibits that are super entertaining for both kids and adults.
Stratham Hill Park is an outdoor recreation area just slightly west of Greenland that serves as a community hub of this region of New Hampshire. It’s an all-year place where you can find ball fields and pools in the summertime, as well as ice skating rinks in the winter. There are also over six miles of trails that are great for hiking or fat biking in the winter time (as the runs are groomed for your safety). Oh, and did we mention that dogs are allowed? Feel free to bring your furry friend along for the adventure. For other dog-friendly options in nearby Maine, check out Pet Friendly Maine: Our Favorite Locations.
There are a few great options to get your culinary fix in Greenland. By far the best restaurant in the area is the Country View. A brunch spot with hearty takes on benedicts and scrambles, the Country View is a great spot to visit with friends and family, or to grub out solo at the bar with a coffee and a book. For a more homey budget option, check out Greenland Famous Roast Beef, Seafood, and Pizza. Giving an emphatic “no” to the whole chic brunch culture, Greenland Famous is a humble spot with delicious messy finger food and good company.
Just a quick road trip east from Greenland (discover the 6 Best New England Road Trip Routes) will land you in the quaint coastal town of Portsmouth. Portsmouth combines the vibes of a hardworking seaport village with a diverse arts scene and lots of cultural heritage. Visit Portsmouth for the Odiorne State Park, the Isles of Shoals, and the Strawbery Banke Museum.
Just south of Portsmouth and also a quick drive from Greenland is the coastal town of Rye. Why Rye? You should visit for, among other things, the Granite State Whale Watch, which is a boat that conducts whale watching tours and other educational marine tours. You should also check out the Rye Harbor State Park, which lays claim to one of the most pristine stretches of coastline on the entire east coast. Other gems include the Seacoast Science Center, the Rye Airfield, and Jenness State Beach. For other options on great beaches, check out the 9 Best Beaches on the East Coast.
