The San Antonio Beer Festival is a great opportunity not only to try hundreds of craft foreign and domestic beers, but also to explore a beautiful city with a fascinating history. Worrying about how you’re going to manage it all? Don’t know San Antonio well? We have some tips for taking in both the brews and the views.

1. Don’t miss the Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is a stroll along the San Antonio River, which runs through the heart of downtown San Antonio. The official Riverwalk website even gives you tips for romantic, family-oriented or food-oriented walkers. The best time to go is at night when the riverboats and restaurants are lit up.

2. Don’t expect unlimited tasting

The state of Texas, by law, bans unlimited beer tasting events. Upon entry, you’ll receive a sampling card that allows you 12 two-ounce beer samples.

3. Remember the Alamo

The site of the famous Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution, the Alamo stands today as a museum. If you’re an out-of-stater, the story of the Alamo and its historical significance will teach you a great deal about the state’s history and identity.

4. Buy ahead!

If you don’t like lines, buy your tickets online ahead of time because lines get long on festival day. Imagine, just a few clicks get you out of the line and through to the cold ones.

5. Have an exit plan

Whether it’s a taxi, Uber or designated driver, know how you’re getting home before you start sipping.

6. Don’t be stingy

Remember that a portion of festival proceeds go to the San Antonio Food Bank. So pour another beer and head back to the food truck (again?).

7. Stay along the river

The San Antonio River runs through the heart of the city and some of the best hotels and hostels sit on the banks. This downtown hotel and this Airbnb just south of downtown are just two great options.
